November 26.
331.  The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. (Franklin D. Roosevelt).
Not to fear what ought to be feared, is folly; it is the work of the wise to fear what should be feared. (Thirukkurahl – 428).
அஞ்சுவது அஞ்சாமை பேதமை; அஞ்சுவது
அஞ்சல் அறிவார் தொழில். (குறள் - 428).
          Anjuvadhu anjaamai paedhaimai; anjuvadhu
Anjal arivaar thozhil. (Thirukkurahl – 428).

When we are born, we don’t have any fear. As we grow, we learn one by one. Once we know that, we understand its good and bad effects. The good effect makes us happy. Once we know the dangers in it, we get anxiety and fear.
Even though a material might give many good things to us, sometimes, it would cause damage also. We should be aware of it and act accordingly. We have to fear about dangerous things; we have to protect ourselves from that. But, we should not think about fear at all times, and remain without any activity. Electricity is useful to us in enormous ways. However, we should be aware of the dangers in it. It is not visible to us. It’s dangerous effect increases proportionate to its voltage and watt power; sometimes, it causes death also. The power of wind is also like that; if its power is high, damages occur. Fire and water power is also similar; in spite of the various good things, the devastation is also seen when the strength becomes enormous. We see the forest fires, building fires, and floods often which cause destructions. Likewise, if food, sleep, and sleeplessness increase, the health would be affected. Hence, there should be a limit for everything. But, we should not keep idle due to fearing about something.
Therefore, we should know the good and bad effects of anything, and then use it. We should not be afraid of everything. But, caution is needed where ever is required.

November 27.
332.  The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. (Franklin D. Roosevelt).
A kingdom is that which continues to be free from excessive starvation, irremediable epidemics, and destructive foes. (Thirukkurahl – 734).
உறுபசியும் ஓவாப் பிணியும் செறுபகையும்
சேராது இயல்வது நாடு. (குறள் - 734).
          Vuru-pasiyum vovaap pihniyum seru-pagaiyum
Saeraadhu yiyalvadhu naadu. (Thirukkurahl – 734).
If a family is to be considered great, the people there should have good health. Further, everyone should be engaged in appropriate jobs, according to their education and experience. There should be suitable facilities in that house for the people. If a village has plenty of such houses, it would be considered as a great village.
When we say that every family should be great, it does not mean that all the families should be alike. People in the same house do not have same profession, in general. Hence, people should study as much as possible, and do the work according to their capacity and lead suitable life. The higher and lower status should not be a matter of concern in a family. One’s level depends on his motivation and hard work. Others should observe that and plan the ways to pursue for their own growth. Everyone should possess basic needs in life. This is good for the society. Everyone must be able to get the basic facilities. This requires full cooperation among the people. Poor people should work as much as they could. The affluent people should be kind to the poor, and help them to get education and employment. If neighbors are starved, we should offer them food. We should help the weak elders. This situation exists in villages. It would be a good plan to ensure a comfortable life to everyone, wherever they might be.
Therefore, a developed country means that the basic facilities are present for everyone there. Everyone should help to achieve this. The poor people should not indulge in wrong activities mentioning their poverty as an excuse. With a view to become rich, one should not earn money in an unlawful way. Let us think good things.

November 28.
333.  We have always known that heedless self-interest was bad morals; we know now that it is bad economics. (Franklin D. Roosevelt).
A kingdom is that which is desired for its immense wealth, and which grows greatly in prosperity, being free from destructive causes. (Thirukkurahl – 732).
பெரும்பொருளால் பெட்டக்கது ஆகி அருங்கேட்டால்
ஆற்ற விளைவது நாடு. (குறள் - 732).
          Perum-poruhlaal petta(k)kadhu aagi arung-kaettaal
Aartra vihlaivadhu naadu. (Thirukkurahl – 732).
During our young years, we would not be aware of wealth, the way to earn it, the way to spend it and the method of saving. When we reach the age of 20-25 years, we would get to know the values of materials and money, and the greatness of good character. We should understand this rare opportunity, and lead a great life.
Life does not mean just waking up, eating, working and sleeping day by day. Those who lead such a life would live a routine life, without much change. There would be no damage to the country by such people. Some people would like to acquire a lot of money by wrong approaches. By this, the life of many people would be affected. Some of our philosophy books tell that the bitter words told by such affected persons would bring in doom to the life of the deceiver or his generation. People should realize this, and avoid doing unjustified deeds. Some people would consider this as ignorance. People should be encouraged to lead a good life. We should look into the ensuing benefits, without getting deep into the reality of such words. Hence, one should not involve in dangerous activities to become rich within a short time. The wealth obtained by unlawful ways is considered as ‘black money’, which destroys a country’s economy. In spite of knowing this, nobody tries to find out how a person could become rich within a short time. If this is understood and acted properly, a country would prosper benefitting everyone.
Therefore, people should earn the money in proper method. The country progresses by those who earn wealth through good ways. The country deteriorates by those who earn money in bad ways. We should realize this and act with responsibility.

November 29.
334.  I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am grateful to those teachers. (Kahlil Gibran).
Of what use are the eyes amongst one’s members, if they cannot by their own indications read those of another?  (Thirukkurahl – 705).
குறிப்பின் குறிப்பு-உணரா வாயின் உறுப்பினுள்
என்ன பயத்தவோ கண். (குறள் - 705).
          Kurippin kurippuhnaraa vaayin vuruppinuhl
          Yenna paya(th)thavo kahn? (Thirukkurahl – 705).
There are many things in life that we have to learn. In childhood times, we learn the habits from our parents. This is very important for our life. If we learn good things at that time, we become good persons. If we learn bad things, we would end up as bad persons. Hence, we should learn only good things.
First, we learn the principles of the life from home. Then we acquire the worldly knowledge from schools and colleges, and work for the prosperity of the country. It is the responsibility of every person to work for the progress of the country. There may be some drawbacks in such activities. When such things happen to us, or to others, we have to realize that and rectify the same to proceed further. Likewise, we have to be aware of the bad character of some people and the ensuing dangers, and control us from doing the same mistake. If the son observes the ill-treatment of his mother by his father, he should be kind to his wife and lead a happy life, without repeating the same behavior. Instead of that, if one lives with the same bad behavior, it is good to a human being. One should understand the after effects of a quarrel, such as bitter feeling, tension, and blood pressure due to anger; this should be avoided.
Therefore, what we should learn from others’ bad qualities and the ensuing dangers is that we should not become bad persons; let us live as good people.

November 30.
335.  No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. (Anna Eleanor Roosevelt).
The suffering that fools inflict upon themselves is hardly possible even to foes. (Thirukkurahl – 843).
அறிவிலார் தாம்தம்மைப் பீழிக்கும் பீழை
செறுவார்க்கும் செய்தல் அரிது. (குறள் - 843).
          Arivilaar thaam-thammai(p) peezhikkum peezhai
Seruvaarkkum seidhal aridhu. (Thirukkurahl – 843).
The way we talk and what we perform do not take place without our liking. However, we should not think that we can tell anything and do anything. Everyone should have some self control. Others should not be insulted.
When we go out, we wear good dress. In cold climate, we wear clothes which will give warmth to us. We use suitable footwear. Whether one is educated or uneducated, everyone uses the foot wares suitable to his foot. In the same way, a person should talk with a limit only. The uneducated people might not know to use proper words; but, undignified words should not be used. If someone praises us, our mind recognizes it and feels happy. If we could not hear such praising words for some reason, we would stay normal. If we hear the pleasing words, or see some pleasing scenes, they reach our mind and make us happy. However, when we think of something deeply, we become unaware of the talks or the things around us. Due to this only, many people do not see the trains and vehicles approaching them, when they are talking over mobile phones while walking. The accidents occur for the same reason while driving the vehicles. There is no use even if we sit in a class room, if we don’t listen to the teacher; the eyes and ears become useless. If the mind does not involve in the activity, there is no use of doing anything. We become inert to such happenings.
Therefore, only if we focus our mind in an activity, the effect would be felt by us. That should be a good activity. We should not give room to bad things in our mind. Let us keep this in mind and do good things.

November 21.
326.  A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject. (Sir Winston Churchill).
Those who undertake to speak without knowing the (nature of the) court are ignorant of the quality of words as well as devoid of the power (of learning). (Thirukkurahl – 713).
அவைஅறியார் சொல்லல்மேற் கொள்பவர் சொல்லின்
வகைஅறியார் வல்லதூஉம் இல். (குறள் - 713).
          Avaiyariyaar sollalmaer kohlbavar sollin
Vagayariyaar; valladhooum ill. (Thirukkurahl – 713).
We should know the difference between discussion and argument. A discussion will deal with topics which will ensure good life, like good principles and the methods for improving the life, comprising elders, leaders, and experts in the respective topics. This will contribute to the development and benefit to the country. Argument will involve exchange of harsh words, and end in a win to one group and defeat to the other.
An argument will occur between the owner of an industry and the workers, for reasons such as job, wages, and facilities. It will be good if both groups discuss and arrive at a conclusion. Instead of that, if they are involved in arguments, it will lead to bitter feelings among them. The life in the world exists with the cooperation between one another. Everyone should realize it. If a factory is closed, it is a loss to everyone and the country. In a smaller case, a difference of opinion arises even within a family. Brothers, and husband and wife get separated based on arguments. They lose their peaceful life and antagonize the friends and relatives, forgetting the greatness of human life, for the sake of trivial pleasures. The reason for such arguments is their stubborn nature to establish their dangerous characters such as proud and pride. Knowledgeable persons will not involve in arguments. The joy of a win in argument will last only for a short time.
Therefore, let us avoid arguments. Both groups should have understanding. Those who contribute to something should do so with a reason. The opinions of other people should be respected. Let us give respect and get respect.

November 22.
327.  Be nice to people on your way up, because you will meet them on your way down. (Wilson Mizner).
Those who seek to preserve the irreproachable honor of their families will not viciously do what is detrimental thereto. (Thirukkurahl – 956).
சலம்பற்றிச் சால்பில செய்யார் மாசுஅற்ற
குலம்பற்றி வாழ்துமென் பார். (குறள் - 956).
          Salam-partri(ch) saalbila seyyaar maas(u)-artra
          Kulam-partri vaazhdhum-yen baar. (Thirukkurahl – 956).
We should engage ourselves in proper studies and in employment, with the aim of achieving great heights and progress in life. We should lead our life according to our capability. It is not proper to aspire for more, without enhancing our capability.
We see that in weight lifting competitions, a person can be put in a particular group based on his weight only. In wrestling and boxing competitions also, the participants are grouped based on their weight. In the same way, one should have desire and aspiration suitable to his capacity. It is important to fix a minimum target as we fix the higher target. We should be complacent regarding the material desires. When one reaches a higher level in life, his humbleness must also increase. Only if a person’s humbleness increases, he will get more appreciation. Many people will feel proud based on their position, wealth and physical strength. Based on their proud thinking, some people would insult others and talk in an undignified language. The three points mentioned above will decline over the years when a person gets old. The leaves from a tree dry up and fall down. We see our grandparents in our house being weak, and suffering from hearing and memory loss, and unable to walk or speak properly. It is natural for everyone to attain that stage. One cannot remain in the adult stage all the time. Even great leaders, military persons, and athletes will experience loss of their strength (physical and mental) after some years, and spend the time looking for the last days of their life.
Therefore, when we are strong we should work well. But, we should live with humbleness. We should move with others with respect. Whether one is a king, a minister, teacher, head of a family, he should always respect others and live well.

November 23.
328.  The optimist sees the doughnut; but, the pessimist sees the hole. (McLandburgh Wilson).
(True) knowledge is the perception concerning everything of whatever kind, that the thing is the true thing. (Thirukkurahl – 355).
எப்பொருள் எத்தன்மைத்து ஆயினும் அப்பொருள்
மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு. (குறள் - 355).
          Yep-poruhl yeth-thanmai(th)thu aayinum ap-poruhl
          Meip-poruhl kaahnbadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 355).
We see the objects in different ways, just like we differ from one another. Some persons look at good things only; some look at the faults alone. We have to analyze these actions.
There are so many trees around us. We benefit enormously from the trees. We know the usefulness of the trees as doors, windows, tables, chairs, and for laying roof in the olden days; a lot of houses are built with woods in western countries, even now. Some trees yield fruits and other things which are useful as food material and medicine. Further, it produces oxygen which is essential for our breathing to sustain life. It gives shade during sunny times. Even though we enjoy many benefits from the trees, some people complain of garbage by looking at the falling dry leaves, and advocate the removal of the trees. In the same way, the rain is useful to us in many ways. If there is no rain, many places will not have good water. There will be no life without water. But, there are people who worry at rainy times. One should prevent the damages caused by heavy rains, with appropriate plans ahead of the season. Thus, every object is useful to us in many ways. We should think of the proper ways to make use of them.
Thus, those who are interested in development would see only the good from things. Those who do not like to see developments would waste their time and knowledge in finding only the faults. It is important to perform a work without any mistake. Hence, let us see only the good things; let us help prevent the bad things.

November 24.
329.  Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else. (Will Rogers).
Even through forgetfulness, meditate not the ruin of another. Virtue will mediate the ruin of him who thus meditates. (Thirukkurahl – 204).
மறந்தும் பிறன்கேடு சூழற்க சூழின்
அறம்சூழும் சூழ்ந்தவன் கேடு. (குறள்- -204).
          Marrandhum piran-kaedu soozharkka; soozhin
          Aram-soozhum soozhndhavan kaedu. (Thirukkurahl – 204).
There is difference between happiness and fun. Happiness is obtained by an action or incident that will please everyone. Fun can be said to mean the feeling that one gets by a difficult performance done by someone else. We laugh when we watch the circus. But, we never think of the dangers the performers are prone to.
We feel happy when we succeed in our efforts utilizing our knowledge or hard work. But, we feel bad even if a small setback occurs. We regret if we slip and fall down. We feel bad and get angry, if a vehicle splashes dirty water on us in a rainy day; we scold the driver of that vehicle. But, if the same incident occurs to another person, we laugh at it. In general, if young children laugh at it in such a situation, it is not a big fault. But, elders should not do like that. Others’ misery is also like that. We never notice it and regret for it. But, even a small trouble hurts us very much. Some men, who misbehave with other ladies, get angry with anyone if the latter misbehaves with their sisters. If this is realized, no one would do things which would hurt others. There would be no ‘ragging’ in colleges. In families, harmony would exist without any antagonism between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
Therefore, we should be cautious when we speak. We should remember that others would also feel bad if we insult them, just like we would react. Let us realize this and be nice to everyone.

November 25.
330.  Conscience is the inner voice that warns us somebody may be looking. (Henry L. Menken).
Let not a man knowingly tell a lie; for after he has told the lie, his mind will burn him (with the memory of his guilt). (Thirukkurahl – 293).
தன்நெஞ்சு அறிவது பொய்யற்க பொய்த்தபின்
தன்நெஞ்சே தன்னைச் சுடும். (குறள் - 293).
          Thun-nenju arivadhu poiyarkka; poi(th)tha-pin
          Thun-nenjae thunnai(ch) sudum. (Thirukkurahl – 293).
We read many books and hear stories from the young age. We enhance our knowledge by this way. Due to the development of our knowledge, we have achieved material advances in the modern world. Due to the development in the medical area, many illnesses are cured, which increases our lifespan. It is a pride to have achieved good progress in the fields like computer and medicine.
This type of learning is for doing good things. However, there are people who commit a lot of crimes. We have to think about the ways to change such people to a good life. Only for this purpose, we have proverbs and philosophical books. We have to read such books and tell the younger generation. Teachers and parents should follow this. One should find out the reason for getting a bad thought. Those who are incapable of acquiring the proper qualification for getting something use wrong approaches to earn wealth. Such wealth, earned by wrong route, will never last long. It cannot be enjoyed too. Such faults would erupt even after a few years. The people having such wealth would be ashamed of their wrong deeds, and hate their own life. They would live without peace, happiness and satisfaction. They would be ashamed to tell their children about their work and the method of becoming rich. Their conscience would always be hurting them.
Hence, no one should do any mistake. Comfortable life alone would not give happiness; one should live without any blemish.

November 16.
321.  Child! Do not throw this book about; refrain from the unholy pleasure of cutting all the pictures out! Preserve it as your chiefest treasure. (Hilaire Belloc).
Letters and the numbers are the two eyes of man. (Thirukkurahl – 392).
எண்-என்ப ஏனை எழுத்தென்ப இவ்விரண்டும்
கண்-என்ப வாழும் உயிர்க்கு. (குறள் - 392).
          Yhen-yenba yaenai yezhu(th)thenba yiv-virahndum
          Kahn-yenba vaazhum vuyirkku. (Thirukkurahl – 392).
Our life has many stages. During childhood, mother, father, and the relatives who are nearby only will be known. In the school going stage, opportunities to associate with others arise. In adult stage, we learn a lot of things. In the old age, we are able to understand the really great ones. Hence, we say that one should listen to elders, and follow accordingly.
In young days, we will tend to tear and bite whatever we get; then we throw them. If some objects break, many children will be happy. It is because one object becomes many pieces, and the process creates some sound. After realizing the value and usefulness of the objects, no one would like to damage any object. Hence, the children should be taught good habits from the young age itself. Since a situation exists wherein the parents do not have proper education, many children lack the opportunity to grow with good character. The schools should realize this and mend the students properly. Movies and TV serials should act with social development principles. This service is essential until the present generation of students realizes it and reaches the stage of parents. If these principles are told for just one minute, it is not enough. There is a proverb which says, ‘a stitch in time saves nine’. The elders must think about this and act accordingly.
Therefore, all the children must be taught about the good characters and education, from the young age in a proper way. This good character and education must reach the village and poor children. Let us contemplate and act.
November 17.
322.  Don’t ever take a fence down until you know the reason why it was put up. (Gilbert K. Chesterton).
The words without profit or pleasure which a man speaks with many persons will have not union with vvirtue and will remove him from goodness. (Thirukkurahl – 194).
நயன்சாரா நன்மையின் நீக்கும், பயன்சாராப்
பண்பில்சொல் பல்லார் அகத்து. (குறள் - 194).
          Nayan-saaraa nanmaiyin neekkum payan-saaraa(p)
          Pahnbil-sol pal-laar aga(th)thu. (Thirukkurahl – 194).
Before starting a work, one should know the reason for doing the work, and think of the materials needed and how to carry out the work. This is how all the work is being done.
Thus, the objects we see, buildings and other facilities were created with some reasons. Some alterations might be needed due to changes over the years. Certain things should not be changed. Due to the scientific advances, one can do certain things in a modern method. The first airplane could fly for about 30 meters only. By making use of that information, now the planes are made which could fly for 12-15 hours, in a speed of about 600 KM/hour at 10,000 meter height, and capable of carrying 400 persons, their baggage and sufficient food for them, and necessary fuel and other things. Even though we have achieved many developments in several areas, we still follow the old habits in certain areas. Specifically, it is not good to change the olden golden habits in areas such as food intake, association with others, and the way of life. It is not wrong to make mechanical changes; but, it is not good to make changes pertaining to human nature. One should not omit reading good philosophical books, and learning by listening to the pertinent stories. Those books aim to make people lead life in a good way. Modern facilities will enhance the external material comforts. It does not mean that olden habits are unsuitable for the present time. These books contain the good habits, which existed for thousands of years.
Therefore, it is not proper to change or discord the good principles of life without understanding them. Let us understand and live properly.

November 18.
323.  It is better to be making the news than taking it; to be an actor rather than a critic. (Sir Winston Churchill).
If you appear (in this world), appear with fame. For, those who are destitute of it will be better not to be born than to be born. (Thirukkurahl – 236).
தோன்றின் புகழொடு தோன்றுக அஃதிலார்
தோன்றலின் தோன்றாமை நன்று. (குறள் - 236).
          Thoandrin pugazhodu thoandruga; agdhilaar
Thoandralin thoandraamai nandru. (Thirukkurahl – 236).
We enjoy so many facilities in the world. We use many electrical gadgets in our house. The people who lived earlier invented the machines, electricity, electric bulbs, computers and other things. We have to think about it.
Even while enjoying such facilities, we find fault in that. We should try to rectify such faults. We should do things which will be of help to others. This thinking must occur, at least, to some students in each class. A lot of development has taken place in the medical field in the last 20 years. Our growth was enormous in the past 50 years. Even though we have achieved developments in areas like food production, industry, medicine, education and sanitary conditions, we should develop further; only then, our development will be in level with our population. India’s population has grown from 439 million in 1961 to 1,210 million in 2011. Some people have the habit of accusing others at all times; it will be good if such people could find a solution. Finding fault is easy. To perform a task is difficult. Most of us use our knowledge only to find fault with others. We spend the time by discussing the past news. We should use our time in doing good deeds and accomplish it. The news on the death (5th October 2011) of Mr. Steve Jobs, who was responsible for making ‘The Apple’ computer, made the whole world mourn for him; as per the news, even though he did not have a degree, he could make an enormous contribution to the world through the computer development.
Therefore, let us not waste our time by criticizing the past actions; let us do good things and enjoy the benefits.
November 19.
324.  If we open a quarrel between the past and the present, we shall find that we have lost the future. (Sir Winston Churchill).
They who thoughtfully consider and wait for the (right) time (for action), may successfully meditate (the conquest of) the world. (Thirukkurahl – 485).
காலம் கருதி இருப்பர் கலங்காது
ஞாலம் கருது பவர். (குறள்- 485).
          Kaalam karudhi yiruppar kalangaadhu
Gnaalam karudhu bavar. (Thirukkurahl – 485).
It is natural to get difference of opinion between people. If it occurs, one should discuss it with patience and reach a decision. If everyone thinks himself as great and talk of his principles alone, it may end up in a quarrel. Due to this, the time and relationship of the two will be lost. Hence, this type of action should be avoided.
Some people will argue that the principles of the olden days will not suit to the present time. Due to scientific developments, we have progressed very much in the last 20-30 years; it has changed a lot in many aspects. The use of computer in place of typewriter has brought a lot of changes. This does not cause disagreement between people. In the olden days, the mode of travel involved bullock and horse drawn carts, or walking. Now, the use of bikes, cars, trains and planes for travel is not objected by anyone. But, some people advocate for a change in the character and habit for the present time. The facilities for a living can undergo changes; but, the character of a person should not change. Even if a father is a thief, he would not want his son to be like that. A father would like to see his son as a good person, even though the former might have committed crimes. Therefore, one should not waste the time by arguing with elders and great persons about good habits. The argument will affect the property and even life. The disease like AIDS occurs due to the absence of good family lifestyle. The cancer is not considered prevalent in the olden days. The health gets spoiled by leading a life with new habits, and by ignoring the old ones. We are not able to protect ourselves from some diseases, in spite of medical advancements.
Therefore, let us lead a good life by realizing the value of the old habits, and adhering to it, instead of opposing it and losing the life.

November 20.
325.  Short words are best and the old words when short are best of all. (Sir Winston Churchill).
Deliver your speech, after assuring yourself that no counter speech can defeat your own. (Thirukkurahl – 645).
சொல்லுக சொல்லைப் பிறிதோர்சொல் அச்சொல்லை
வெல்லும்சொல் இன்மை அறிந்து. (குறள் - 645).
          Solluga sol-lai(p) piridhoar-sol ach-sollai
          Vellum-sol yinmai arindhu. (Thirukkurahl – 645).
If a nation is to be considered as a developed one, it should have progressed in different aspects. It should have achieved progress in quality and quantity in the areas such as education, sanitation, housing, roadways, economics, and industries. This should be feasible to be possessed by everyone, according to his justifiable requirement. If one’s desire is more, it decreases the opportunity of the other. People should realize this.
People should nurture the good thinking that ‘let us live and let others live’. Rich persons should think of the good things which are useful to the people and the country, and do such things. Performing a ‘poor feeding’ for one day is not enough. One should create opportunities to elevate the lifestyle of the poor people. They should be taught to work and earn money in a good way. They should be motivated to discard the laziness and make them work and live with dignity. They should avoid cheating others to lead an easy way of life. These good principles are available to us in different languages, through texts, poems, proverbs, literature and other moral books. These are golden proverbs which are useful to our way of life. We should read them daily, at least for a few minutes. Parents and teachers should motivate the children to adhere to these habits.
Hence, one should tell the people about the golden proverbs. A country will lose its integrity, economy and growth, if its people are not of good character, even though the country might look developed. Economic growth alone does not make a country great. Economy and character should grow together. One cannot get a good life by possessing one and losing the other. Let us recognize the value of character, and develop it along with wealth, and live happily.

November 6.
311.  There must be, not a balance of power, but a community of power; not organized rivalries, but an organized common peace. (Woodrow Wilson).
The learned say that fierceness (in contest with a foe) is indeed great valor; but to become a benefactor in case of accident (to a foe) is the extreme (limit) of that valor. (Thirukkurahl – 773).
         பேராண்மை என்ப தறுகண்ணொன்று உற்றக்கால்
         ஊராண்மை மற்றுஅதன் எஃகு. (குறள் - 773).
          Paeraahnmai yemba tharukahn-ondru urtrakkaal
Vooraahnmai martrdhan yeggu. (Thirukkurahl – 773).

Every person is different from the other in their appearance. No harm takes place by the external variation. But, many troubles occur by the difference in the thoughts. This difference should be kept under control. To achieve this, everyone should develop his/her knowledge.
One thousand years ago, our country was ruled by many kings. Their ruling area depended upon their army’s strength. If some kings are friendly with the neighboring kings, they will not have war with one another, which results in good governance. The kings were engaged in doing good things to the people, building temples and other good things. This had resulted in the various temples, which we have even now; our culture has been preserved. The wars in those times were fought with regulations. The fights took place in day times, at a specified place, and without harming ladies, children and old persons. But now, the war aims at destroying the country and the people, with the use of war planes and missiles. The damages are very much dangerous beyond any thinking or words. Hence, in the present days, people should control their minds; it is all the more important to preserve peace by discussion at the time of any misunderstanding.
Therefore, everyone should try to preserve peace. In the early times, the dangers were absent, or at least less. Due to the changed methods, damages to properties and life occur now. We can even say that not a day pass on without any quarrel between two adjacent villages, states, or wars between two neighboring countries. It has become an aim to destroy those who are not liked. Therefore, let us avoid this and live together in harmony, with good thoughts.

November 7.
312.  It is a great thing to start a life with a small number of really good books which are your very own. (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle).
Like learning, the friendship of the noble, the more it is cultivated, the more delightful does it become. (Thirukkurahl – 783).
          நவில்தொறும் நூல்-நயம் போலும் பயில்தொறும்
          பண்புடை யாளர் தொடர்பு. (குறள் - 783).

          Navil-thorum nool-nayam poalum payil-thorum
Pahnbudai yaahlar thodarbu. (Thirukkurahl – 783).
There is a proverb which tells that ‘a book is a good friend’. That book must be a good one. The book referred here is the one which could be read by everyone, and help them live a good life. The books on topics like science, engineering and medicine, will help the respective people to progress in that area. But, the general books on philosophy will temper the human mind.
If we read a book on specific subject, we can excel in that discipline. The philosophy books will help us to utilize our knowledge on a subject for a good purpose. If we use our knowledge to perform dangerous deeds, what we might have studied is waste. It is not the innocent common people who are responsible for the dangerous incidents that take place in the world. Some persons, who are good in certain subjects, use their knowledge for wrongful ends due to their greed for more wealth, ignoring their consciousness. They should realize that. Therefore, one should buy good books, and read them often in their homes. Our body gets dirty every day. Everyone knows that it is not enough to clean it only on one day. In the same way, it is not sufficient if we hear or read a good book for one day. Just like we eat food and fruits daily for our good health, we should read good books daily to have a healthy mind.
Hence, there should be good books in everyone’s home. We should think whether it is correct or not, to carry out the work as others tell us. Just like having own books, our thoughts also should be of our own. If we accept others’ principles, they should be wise persons. Hence, let us listen to wise persons, read their books, and follow it accordingly.
November 8.
313.  When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle).
All lamps are not lamps; the lamp of truth is the lamp of the wise. (Thirukkurahl – 299).
          எல்லா விளக்கும் விளக்கல்ல சான்றோர்க்குப்
          பொய்யா விளக்கே விளக்கு. (குறள் - 299).
          Yellaa vihlakkum vihlakkalla; saantroarkku (p)
Poyyaa vihlakkae vihlakku. (Thirukkurahl – 299).
The proverbs and philosophical books in the world will always tell good things. That is the reason for their long lasting nature over the centuries. Everyone should read such good principles from the childhood. Only then, they would grow with good thoughts and live a good life.
One should always remember that one might come across many obstacles while doing a work. But, he should think of overcoming the obstacles, without getting dejected. In villages, people cultivate paddy and other food materials, and make them available to everyone. In that work, grass and other unwanted weeds would also grow. The grass and weeds will be removed; then the paddy will grow well, and the yield will be good. Likewise, the thoughts which will spoil us will emanate from our mind; they should be removed. People who might damage our good thoughts could be near us. We should recognize such persons and avoid them; we should also be away from them. We wear shirts and other clothes, only after removing the adhering dirt and other things. In the same way, all the obstacles should be removed.
Therefore, let us live with true and good principles. Let us eliminate false appearances. Let us realize the truth which gives us satisfaction, and protect it.
November 9.
314.  Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognizes genius. (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle).
To secure the friendship of the great is true wisdom; it is (also) wisdom to keep (that friendship) unchanged and) not opening and closing (like the lotus flower). (Thirukkurahl – 425).
         உலகம் தழீஇயது ஒட்பம் மலர்தலும்
         கூம்பலும் இல்லது அறிவு. (குறள் - 425).

         Vulagam thazhee-yiyadhu otpam ; malarthalum
Koombalum yilladhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 425).
It is natural for everyone to think of a comfortable life. To achieve this aim, we try in various ways. Some people succeed and live well. They would have chosen a good route. Some persons do not lead a happy life, in spite of their material possessions. Such people would have earned their wealth in a wrongful way. That will never give happiness.
Some of the persons who chose a good way to live may not have accomplished fully. Those who participate in sports will always aim to reach the top position. But everyone cannot get the first place. Others should think of this situation, and be happy. In the same way, one should aim in life. However, they should live according to their capacity. Such people cannot think above a certain level. Ordinary people cannot identify the great persons, capable persons, and the experts in each discipline. Only those who are knowledgeable in a field can identify the experts in that line. Only a jeweler can know a faultless diamond. The grammar and the greatness of a poem can be appreciated only by those who know that language, but not by others. Many examples can be mentioned like this.
Therefore, there should be eminent persons in all disciplines. Only then great accomplishments can be achieved. Great teachers could generate great students; great students and persons could create great leaders; great leaders could shape a country great. Hence, let us try to get good knowledge.
November 10.
315.  There are two things to aim in life; first, to get what you want; and, after that, to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second. (Logan P. Smith).
A clear, undimmed vision (of things) will deliver its possessors from the darkness (of future births), and confer the felicity (of heaven). (Thirukkurahl – 352).
          இருள்நீங்கி இன்பம் பயக்கும் மருள்நீங்கி
          மாசறு காட்சி யவர்க்கு. (குறள் -352).
          Yiruhl-neengi yinbam payakkum maruhl-neengi
Maasaru kaatchi yavarkku. (Thirukkurahl – 352).
During our childhood and youthful times, some desires will occur in our minds. Once they were achieved, we would have enjoyed and even forgotten all about them. Some desires will arise in the adult age. One should analyze it and choose the good thing, which is suitable. Whatever one did in young age cannot be done in the adult age; some actions should be avoided.
Everyone will have the desire to possess wealth, house and other things. They should live happily with the income obtainable, based on their knowledge and effort. Some people might not be able to get some facilities due to some circumstances. To get those things, some persons would tend to earn the money in wrongful ways. Due to this, the wrong route would become their way of life. They would have acquired many houses, and a large amount of wealth. However, these persons will lose a peaceful life and live in fear; they will get illness and lead a life without good food and sleep. Some persons will spend their money in good ways, which are beneficial to others. Due to these deeds, the beneficiary and the one who helped will lead a happy life. The wealth accumulated without helping others become unused, by remaining in banks and in the land.
Hence, even though many people know the ways to earn money, only some persons enjoy the benefits out of it. It is a lot better to get pleasure by helping others than self enjoyment. A philosopher in Tamil, poet Ramalinga Swamy, prays for ‘helping all the living things’. It is good to think of ‘love’; it is better to show it in action.

November 11.
316.  Eat with the rich, but go to the play with the poor, who are capable of joy. (Logan P. Smith).
The great will not regard as poverty the low estate of that man who dwells in the virtue of equity. (Thirukkurahl – 117).
          கெடுவாக வையாது உலகம் நடுவாக
          நன்றிக்கண் தங்கியான் தாழ்வு . (குறள் - 117).
          Keduvaaga vaiyaadhu vulagam naduvaaga
          Nandri(k)-kahn thangiyaan thaazhvu. (Thirukkurahl – 117).
Each one of us will have different habits. If more people with good habits are there, that place is considered as a good one. If many parts of a city and country are clean, they are considered as good. If rubbish and insanitary conditions prevail in a city, it is considered as an unhygienic one. If poverty prevails, that country is a poor one. Hence, the nature of a country is determined based on the condition of majority of the people.
It is natural to have poor and rich people in a country. Even though the poor people live with less facility, they never worry about anything, but lead the life with happiness and misery simultaneously. They never worry or think about the next day or next year. Their happiness will appear and disappear within a few minutes. Rich people will involve in safeguarding their wealth; people who are involved in industry and other big projects would be spending their time in the supervision, as well as in the expansion of their work. Since they are involved in such activities, which, of course, contribute to the development of the country, they could not enjoy their life properly. Many of the poor people will spend their time in eating, sleeping and in other recreational activities. They live without control in food and drinking habits. If sleep increases, the country’s development will decrease. It is enough if our food intake is sufficient to our body. Excess food will damage our digestive mechanism; in addition to the wastage of food, the health is also affected. We should eat only appropriate quantity of food.
Hence, the responsibility and good principles of rich persons, and the simple attitude of the poor people are to be appreciated. Let us live with that idea.
November 12.
317.  An intellectual hatred is the worst. (William B Yeats).
It is tenfold more injurious to abandon the friendship of the good, than to incur the hatred of the many. (Thirukkurahl – 450).
பல்லார் பகைகொளலின் பத்துஅடுத்த தீமைத்தே
நல்லார் தொடர்கை விடல் . (குறள் - 450).
Pallaar pagai-kohlalin paththaduththa theemaiththae
Nallar thodar-kai vidal. (Thirukkurahl – 450).
How much pleasant would it be, if all the people in the world live with the understanding of one another, and in friendly nature! It is rare even within a village, a city or a country. Sometimes, misunderstanding occurs even within a family. One should think of the dangers arising from that.
It is natural to notice a difference of opinion in a group. One should not think that everyone will think alike at all times. When the difference occurs, the strong persons ridicule the weak, and at times the latter are attacked. In general, educated and wise persons will not hurt others, if there is any disagreement. However, even if one has education, he will become a slave of dangerous habits, instead of becoming a wise person. Due to this, such people utilize their knowledge to do dangerous things. These persons are involved in producing adulterated medicines, and other duplicate products, which could not be distinguished. The wrath of common people will cause only a little damage. Those who instigate the common people are invariably educated to some extent. Such educated people should not be a seed for dangerous activities, ignoring dignified thinking. Those who live as they studied are like machines. Those who understand what they study are called as intelligent persons, wise persons and philosophers. Knowledge and mind must act together. Education will improve the knowledge. This should be properly utilized. If this is realized, the country will progress.
Thus, the educated people who improperly use their knowledge cause more damage to the society than the common people. Hope the people will realize this, and correct themselves to lead a good life.
November 13.
318.  If a man is wise, he gets rich; and if he gets rich, he gets foolish, or his wife does. That is what keeps the money moving around. (Mr.Dooley).
Even those who gather together millions will only enjoy them , as it is been determined by the Disposer (of all things). (Thirukkurahl – 377).
         வகுத்தான் வகுத்த வகையல்லால் கோடி
         தொகுத்தார்க்கும் துய்த்தல் அரிது. (குறள்- 377).
          Vagu(th)than vagu(th)tha vagai-yallaal koadi
Thogu(th)thaarkkum thui(th)thal aridhu. (Thirukkurahl – 377).
We come across rich and poor people in our life. Invariably, the poor people would be uneducated. Some of them would succeed in their life by learning some occupation, and working honestly in that job. Educated persons will succeed by utilizing their knowledge in an appropriate profession.
Successful in life means to earn a good name in the society. One’s knowledge and wealth should be useful to others in a good way. Instead of that, it is wrong to talk ill of others, and control others by the arrogance of being wealthy. It is wrong to enslave others, and thereby improve their popularity. If this happens, such people will turn against us, and try to destroy us. Due to this, many zamins have vanished. The dangerous small kings have been destroyed. Many wealthy persons who lived earlier have disappeared without any trace. However, the names of wealthy persons and kings, who have done good things to the people, remain even now. One should study their life. It should be remembered by the students, and in later years, they should do good deeds. This is characteristic of a wise person.
Therefore, let us earn in good ways, spend in virtuous ways, and get name and fame.

November 14.
319.  One’s eyes are what one is, one’s mouth what one becomes. (John Galsworthy).
If the good speak vain words, their eminence and excellence will leave them. (Thirukkurahl – 195).
         சீர்மை சிறப்பொடு நீங்கும் பயனில
         நீர்மை உடையார் சொலின் . (குறள் - 195).
          Seermai sira(p)podu neengum payan-yila
Neermai vudaiyaar seyin. (Thirukkurahl – 195).
The philosophical books tell how a person’s life should be, what one should do and should not do. In the present educational system, the learning of moral lessons by students has declined. The students excel in education in areas like science, technology, computer and medicine. But, such students are less in number. Many students start their life without proper education. The moral books and stories are essential for such students.
All the moral books tell us to control our five senses; the eyes, nose, ears, mouth and body are very important for us. Even if one of these five is not proper, the pleasure of life is reduced. But, if we use any of them beyond the limit, that part and our life get damaged. The eyes help us to see the surrounding objects, and for reading. It transmits the objects to our brain as such. Bright light damages the eyes. The mouth is useful for eating and speaking. If we eat everything as our mind tells, our health gets damaged. In the same way, if the mouth tells whatever our mind thinks, we may get into conflicts with others. Hence, we should use our knowledge to control our speech as to what could be said and what not. We should not tell whatever our mind thinks.
Therefore, if we talk in bad words, we will end up in danger. If we speak kindly, we will have a peaceful atmosphere. People who occupy high positions should talk carefully. Much damage would not occur to others by eyes, nose and ears. The misery to others by mouth and body will be enormous. Hence, let us control our five senses.

November 15.
320.  Nonviolence and truth are inseparable and presuppose one another. There is no god higher than truth. (Mahatma Gandhi).
Amidst all that we have seen (described) as real (excellence), there is nothing so good as truthfulness. (Thirukkurahl – 300).
யாமெய்யாக் கண்டவற்றுள் இல்லை எனைத்தொன்றும்
வாய்மையின் நல்ல பிற. (குறள் - 300).
          Yaam-meyyaak kahnda-vartruhl yillai yenaith(u)-ondrum
          Vaaimy-in nalla pira. (Thirukkurahl – 300).
We should always adhere to truth. If we say any lie, our mind will always be hurting us. Even after many years, the lie will not go away from our mind. The misery felt by others due to that lie will not vanish. That misery will initiate dangerous activities and attack us. One would think of a counter attack to resist the attack. Hence, the attacks keep on multiplying. Due to this, damages to property and life take place.
Truth will remain forever. Peace of mind will not be affected. In the absence of bitter feeling, attacks would not occur. Non-violence method is better than the attacks. This attitude will not come to everyone. Only great persons will know this. Young people may not understand this; when they grow older, they will understand this. Based on this, those who think like elders at the young age become great leaders. Ordinary people must understand this. Their improper actions induce others to commit mistakes. Therefore, while studying in schools, students should read the books which inculcate good characters. This should be spread in different ways. In between the TV programs, the advices which could spread good characters must be inserted. Telling it once or twice will not reach everyone.
Thus, good thoughts must prevail in the minds of everyone. If one has the good characters like being honest and kind, he will not get the bad characters like anger, envy, greed and wrong doing to others. Hence, let us develop the good character.

November 1.
306.  The greatest of evils and the worst of crimes is poverty. (George Bernard Shaw).
The misery of poverty brings in its train many (more) miseries. (Thirukkurahl – 1045).
நல்குரவு என்னும் இடும்பையுள் பல்குரைத்
துன்பங்கள் சென்று படும். (குறள்- 1045).
          Nalguravu yennum yidumbaiyuhl palgurai(th)
Thunbangahl sendru padum. (Thirukkurahl – 1045).
We see the people around us, of whom some lead a comfortable life and some live in poverty. We hear that people will refer some families as rich. Of the rich families, many of them would have come from ordinary families about 30-40 years ago. We should think about the reasons for their development to lead a good life at present.
Education is essential to lead a good life. Only a small number of persons were able to read up to 10th standard, about 60-70 years ago. Those who studied at that time were able to get good jobs, and hence, lead a good life. Therefore, their children got a better opportunity to pursue their study well. In the next 30-40 years, people who studied well could get good jobs. Nowadays, one should get high marks, even if they are graduates, since the competition is high. Hence, one can live in a good way only if he/she studies well. Motivation and interest must be present in studies and in the work. Laziness should not be there. Everything must be completed within the stipulated time. Books pertinent to the profession must be read. Our life must be put in proper direction by reading philosophical books. Earning money will eliminate poverty. But, one should avoid bad means to earn money. The ill-earned money will destroy our happiness.
Poverty can be overcome by material gain. But to succeed in life, one needs good thinking, and wealth earned in a good way.

November 2.
307.  Silence is the most perfect expression of scorn. (Geoge Bernard Shaw).
To bear with those who revile us, even as the earth bears up those who dig it, is the first of virtues. (Thirukkurahl – 151).
அகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் நிலம்போலத் தம்மை
இகழ்வார்ப் பொறுத்தல் தலை. (குறள்- 151).
          Agazh-vaarai(th) thaangum nilam-pola(th)-thammai
          Yigazh-vaar(p) poru(th)thal thalai. (Thirukkurahl – 151).
In our life, we will experience moments of likes and dislikes. Those who control and limit such feelings will shine well in life. If the likes are more, it ends up in greed. If we aspire for more wealth, we would tend to earn more money by wrong methods. Instead of that, if we work hard we would gradually progress in life. If the desire is within a limit, it can be called ambition.
When we are compelled by others to carry out a work which we don’t like, we would hate such people. This situation might arise during studies and working times. During studies, the parents and teachers would be strict and also tell advices, for the benefit of the students. One should realize this and study with determination for the progress. Education is the best method. Since the value of education could not be understood at the young age, one dislikes those who emphasize it. Hence, such dislikes should be controlled. During employment times, we should do the work assigned by our superiors. Even if we don’t like the work, we should do it patiently without antagonizing him.
Even in a family, sometimes dislikes would arise. There may be several reasons for it. Within the family, one should not try to find who is at fault. Younger people should maintain tolerance. If elders are at fault, they should realize it and promptly rectify it. If youngsters are at fault, the elders should not mention it often and hurt them. One should not split the family based on such things. A family may have both drawbacks and happiness; a feeling of split should not arise. Patience is the best.

November 3.
308.  One man that has a mind and knows it can always beat ten men who haven’t and don’t. (George Bernard Shaw).
To live as the world lives, this is wisdom.
(Thirukkurahl – 426).
எவ்வது உறைவது உலகம் உலகத்தோடு
அவ்வது உறைவது அறிவு. (குறள் -426).
Yevvadhu vuraivadhu vulagam vulaga(th)thodu
Avvadhu vuraivadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 426).
The people in the world will not be the same. Even among the members in a family, people will be different. The difference will be like strong and weak, educated and uneducated, wise and ordinary persons, and man and woman.
In general, the men will be stronger than the women in a family. People will say that men are born to rule. Explanations as ruling the family and ruling the mind are offered. A woman is considered as a person who patronizes the family, and praised for her love and affection. Thus, a man and a woman are both involved in maintaining a family. There should be no difference of opinion in this. A man should not think of controlling a woman by his physical strength. Even among rich and poor people, insulting or envying the other should be avoided. Wise persons will never boast of their knowledge, or be arrogant towards ordinary people; if they don’t adhere to that, they will not be considered as wise persons. In the same way, educated people will not insult others based on their education. But, the physically strong persons will always hurt the weak persons at all occasions. The animals which have less knowledge will hurt other weak ones for their food. People should use their sixth sense, and live like human being, instead of as animals. It will be considered like that if a man thinks of controlling others in a family. Anger, strength and arrogance should be kept under control. We should follow what our knowledge tells, instead of the mind.
The mind will like our prestige, praise and fame. The knowledge (brain) will like to do great things. Hence, let us live according to our knowledge.
November 4.
309.  No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem. (Booker Washington).
Agriculturists are (as it were) the linch-pin of the world, for they support all other workers who cannot till the soil. (Thirukkurahl – 1032).
உழுவார் உலகத்தார்க்கு ஆணிஅஃது ஆற்றாது
எழுவாரை எல்லாம் பொறுத்து. (குறள் - 1032).
          Vuzhuvaar vulaga(th)taarkku aahni agdh-aartraadhu
Yezhuvaaai yellaam poru(th)thu. (Thirukkurahl – 1032).
Everyone will normally tell that ‘our life is in our hands’. The meaning of this is: only if we study and listen, we will gain knowledge; only if we possess the appropriate knowledge and training for a job, we will get the job. After joining in a job, we will be able to move up only if we work with enthusiasm and honesty. If any mistake occurs, it will spoil our progress; but, if we intentionally cause some damage, our job and life will be in danger. Hence, our life depends on our actions.
We should realize the contributions of others for our comfortable life. If we think about it, our mind will be properly tuned. We will be able to associate with others in a dignified way. We will not get angry with others. Instead of self-centered thoughts, we will think also of others around us. We go to the shops and buy the things we need. We should think about how and who have made those things, how much efforts they would have put in, and how many problems might have been there. We should not think that we pay for it and, hence, get it. The difficulties encountered by the farmers, and the need for Nature’s co-operation for the cultivation of our food cannot be told in words. If they don’t cultivate, the whole world would suffer without food.
Therefore, even if we have a lot of money, have a great job, or acquired enormous knowledge, we need food everyday for our survival. Hence, let us respect the farmers and other workers, and live happily.
November 5.
310.  There is no sin except stupidity. (Oscar Wilde).
The want of wisdom is the greatest of all wants; but that of wealth the world will not regard as such. (Thirukkurahl – 841).
அறிவின்மை இன்மையுள் இன்மை பிறிதின்மை
இன்மையா வையாது உலகு .(குறள் - 841).
Arivinmai inmaiyuhl inmai; pirithinmai
Yinmaiyaa vaiyaadhu vulagu. (Thirukkurahl – 841).
We should be attentive and careful in every activity we are involved. That means, we should guard against the obstacles which we can see. We should also protect ourselves from the invisible happenings which could affect our development.
Every day, we might face some troubles. Our progress will diminish, if we involve in the activities which would waste our time. This is very important during our study time, and working hours. During study time, only if we study daily our education will be wholesome. If we don’t do that, it is similar to having a feast after several days of hunger. In spite of knowing this, it is absurd to waste golden times. Wise people will always be attentive in all their activities. Wise people will say that one should talk gently and without anger, and live without much desire. Even after knowing this, some people do not adhere to this in their life. The reason for this default is their yielding to temptations of the mind rather than the knowledge. The performance of an industry will become poor, if the maintenance workers are lazy and involve in gossip during working hours. Due to this, planes, trains and other such things malfunction, and are involved in accidents. This should be avoided. The supervisors must be vigilant. If the supervisors themselves err, there is nothing inferior.

Therefore, people at any level of jobs should be vigilant in their observation and do intelligently. This is the way for success. Let us destroy ignorance and adamant nature. Let us progress in life.
