December 26.
361.  My rule always was to do the business of the day in the day. (Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington).
Though (a man) should meditate (the conquest of) the world, he may accomplish it, if he acts in the right time, at the right place.  (Thirukkurahl – 484).
ஞாலம் கருதினும் கைகூடும் காலம்
கருதி இடத்தால் செயின். (குறள் - 484).
          Gnaalam karudhinum kyykoodum kaalam
Karudhi yida(th)thaal seyin. (Thirukkurahl – 484).
In order to complete a work on time, we must plan and execute it properly. If we do a job without a time limit, it might not succeed, and sometimes end up without any benefit.
When one writes an examination, it should be completed within the stipulated duration. Only then we could get proper marks for our performance. One must enter the examination hall within the mentioned time. If it is missed, one cannot write that examination on that day. Only if a plane picks up a determined speed within the required time, it can take off from the runway to fly. If not, accident will occur. If a doctor has to perform a surgery, it must be done within the prescribed time; if not, it might affect life of the person. Our body gets into the respective action on time, as soon as the food goes into the stomach. It distributes the energy, obtainable from the food, to different parts of the body appropriately, through blood. If our heart fails to function properly, it would endanger our life. Thus, even nature reminds us to realize our responsibility. If paddy seeds are sowed in a land, it should germinate in 3 days, if all the conditions are proper; if it does not germinate, but remain there for a few days, it would get spoiled. If the paddy seeds germinate, grow well, and reach the harvest stage, it should be harvested; if not, it would fall down and be lost without any use. Therefore, whatever may be the nature we should do good work, without wasting our time. It is not good to think of doing the work only when somebody supervises, and otherwise, remain lazy and waste the time.
Time is precious; let us work without wasting it.

December 27.
362.  There is no mistake; there has been no mistake; and there shall be no mistake. (Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington).
What fault will remain in the king, who has put away his own evils, and looks after the evils of others? (Thirukkurahl – 436).
தன்குற்றம் நீக்கிப் பிறர்குற்றம் காண்கிற்பின்
என்குற்றம் ஆகும் இறைக்கு. (குறள் - 436).
          Tha-n-kurtram neekki(p) pirar-kurtram kaahngir(p)pin
          Yen-kurtram aagum yiraikku? (Thirukkurahl – 436).
Whatever work we do, it should be great. It should be done properly. There should not be any mistake.  Everyone knows that the marks will be less, if a wrong answer is written in an examination. If one eats wrong food, the health will be spoiled. Hence, we should do the work without any mistake.
We should think about the ways to do something without making any mistake. One should ascertain the suitability of a person to do a particular work. To do a surgery, one should have proper training in that area; an ordinary doctor will not be suitable. A researcher in science should have good knowledge in that area. They should have Ph.D. degree. Likewise, the work would be good only if proper persons are employed for it in each discipline. In such work, the materials needed also should be of good quality. Would we buy a torn book or cloth from a shop? Would we buy rotten vegetables and fruits? Thus, when we buy things for our use, we look for good quality products. In the same way, we should sell unadulterated and good quality materials. Only if the building materials are of good quality, the buildings would be strong. The builders must have consciousness and use only good materials for the work. The supervisors also must do their work honestly; if they are bad, the whole work would become a waste. Everyone should think that one should not damage a big project for the sake of getting small benefits.
Hence, let us ignore selfish attitude, do good work for the general welfare, and earn a good name.

December 28.
363.  He who ascends to mountain tops, shall find the loftiest peaks most wrapt in clouds and snow; he who surpasses or subdues mankind must look down on the hate of those below. (Lord Byron).
Though others inflict injuries on you, yet compassionating the sorrow (that will come upon them) it will be well not to do to them anything contrary to virtue. (Thirukkurahl – 157).
திறனல்ல தற்பிறர் செய்யினும் நோநொந்து
அறனல்ல செய்யாமை நன்று. (குறள் - 157).
          Thiran-alla thunpirar seyyinum no-nondhu
Aran-alla seyyaamai nandru. (Thirukkurahl – 157).
In life, we would face small obstacles once in a while. We should not think that everything will be favorable to us at all times. We can progress in life only if we remove the small obstacles and proceed with our aim.
When one is studying in young age, nobody knows the value of education. Playing some games will make the young students happy. However, children must read well from the age of 12-13 years. They must study as much as possible to develop their capacity. They must take up a suitable job, and live happily by leading a good life. One should not look at others who are better placed in life, and aspire to achieve it by wrong means. There will be competition in every level. Those who succeed to reach higher levels must associate with others in a kind manner. Those who could not succeed should never hate the successful person. When there is competition, winning and losing are natural. As this situation exists in sports, it will be the same in life also. If we don’t get a seat in one bus, we take another bus. We never get angry with others. The higher a person climbs, the smaller the objects at the bottom would appear. Hence, we should lead the life by forgetting the obstacles, and ignoring the persons responsible for the hindrance.
Hence, occurrence of small obstacles is common in life. We should move forward to reach the goal in life, without worrying about the hindrances. There are obstacles at all places, depending upon the situation. Hence, one should live without any dejection, and without hurting others, who would have stood on our way. Let us live with good thinking, progress and enjoy.

December 29.
364.  Fare thee well! And if forever, still forever, fare thee well. (Lord Byron).
Let a man reflect, and do things, which bring no reproach. The world will not approve, with him, of things, which should not be approved of. (Thirukkurahl – 470).
எள்ளாத எண்ணிச் செயல்வேண்டும் தம்மொடு
கொள்ளாத கொள்ளாது உலகு. (குறள் - 470).
          Yehllaatha yehnni(ch) seyal-vaehndum; tha-m-modu
Kohllaatha kohllaadhu vulaghu. (Thirukkurahl – 470).
We should work with the thought of achieving greatness at all times. We should excel, whether it is in studies or work. We read in newspapers about some schools getting 100% pass, with a minimum of 60% marks, in the 12th standard examination. It is good to study like that.
There may be several levels of an examination; one should study properly, and perform well to be successful. There are several areas in education and job. We should avoid competing with one another in the same field. One should do good administration. One should draft projects to do good things to the country, and complete them within a certain period. Even if the projects are good, they would end up in failure when the workers are sluggish. We feel happy if there is an expansion in a particular division. But, we neglect to do other related works at the appropriate time. It costs a lot to take up that work after a few years. People experience inconveniences during these years. Since some of the persons who carry out the public works do not execute it properly, the same work is being repeated often, resulting in the wastage of funds. We should think whether we would accept poor quality work in our house.
Therefore, whatever work we do, it must be done properly. The quality should not decline after a few years. We should remember that if our food is spoiled even for one time, we throw it out. Hence, let us always do our duty properly.

December 30.
365.  He is a man of splendid abilities, but utterly corrupt. He shines and stinks like rotten mackerel by moonlight. (John Randolph).
Those who say “we will become (better)” should avoid the performance of acts that would destroy (their fame). (Thirukkurahl – 653).
ஓஒதல் வேண்டும் ஒளிமாழ்கும் செய்வினை
ஆஅதும் என்னும் சொல். (குறள் - 653).
          Voa-vothal vaendum vohli-maazhgum sei-vinai
Aa-adhum yennum avar. (Thirukkurahl – 653).
A person must be intelligent to be great in life. It can be improved by education and practice. If it is knowledge related, it can be improved by higher education. It could be utilized in different ways. The intelligence gained by practice alone would give only a little benefit.
Hence, those who learn well and do great things would lead a respectful life. They should follow certain regulations to sustain their good name. The king Raja Raja Chozhan was considered a great king. He was considered to possess good characters, which are required for a king. They are mercy, courage, broad mind, gratitude, kindness, magnanimity, wisdom, intelligence, truth, patience, concern, tolerance, vision, firmness, persistence, and involvement. These sixteen qualities must be present in a good ruler. These should be possessed also by those who occupy responsible positions. If all the people possess these qualities, the country itself will be a good one. Some bad qualities are considered to spoil the greatness of a person. Some of them are anger, envy, corruption, covet, greed, decontrol of the five senses, ingratitude and idleness. If someone is involved in doing wrongful deeds for the sake of money, delaying a particular work, failing to supervise properly, his fame will be affected, even though he may be a great person. On the day this was written, many high-ranking persons were arrested on corruption charges, indicating the value of the Thirukkurahl and proverbs, which are useful for all generations.
Therefore, even great people should not do wrongful deeds. An inflated balloon bursts immediately, if it is pierced by a small pin. A drop of poison spoils the whole food. A small fire destroys a full forest. Hence, let us avoid wrongful deeds.

December 31.
366.  Education makes people easy to lead, but difficult to drive; easy to govern but impossible to enslave. (Henry Peter, Lord of Brougham).
No terrifying calamity will happen to the wise, who (foresee and) guard against coming evils. (Thirukkurahl – 429).
எதிரதாக் காக்கும் அறிவினார்க்கு இல்லை
அதிர வருவதுஓர் நோய். (குறள் - 429).
          Yedhirathaa(k) kaakkum arivinaarkku yillai
Adhira varuvadhore noai. (Thirukkurahl – 429).
The people in a country have to be educated, if the country is to be great. They should have good conduct. They should put in hard work. Even if one of these declines, the country cannot attain a great position. The leaders of the country should possess these qualities.
The educated persons would analyze the suggestions of others, and accept only the good ideas. They cannot be pressurized. Common people would yield to trivial benefits, and do wrong deeds; sometimes, they would be like slaves due to the fear of violence. Education will yield the necessary courage to a person. One cannot be forced to do a knowledge-based work. Based on the bad activities of some educated persons, we should not consider that all the educated persons would be like that. Such people are to be considered as ‘scanners’, the machine which simply copies the pages of books without understanding anything from that book. Hence, we should strive to establish good schools, colleges and universities. The school education could generate people, who could do only a limited type of work. The college graduates could do great works. Only the universities could generate college teachers, and do great deeds. If there are not enough teachers in the universities, it would become inactive; this will lead to the downfall of good colleges. Due to this, the good schools will decline, and everything would become inactive. Hence, if the universities in a state become inactive, the state would be short of educated people in 10 years, which leads to the downfall of the state. Thus, just like treating a disease after finding its root-cause, we should be aware of the importance of education and educators.

Hence, higher education is like our backbone. The university which offers this must be great. Only then great doctors, engineers, scientists, lawyers and other great persons would be possible. Otherwise, there will be only hospitals without doctors, colleges and schools without teachers, and offices without proper employees. Hence, let us respect the education and strive to develop it.

December 16.
351.  Those who corrupt the public mind are just as evil as those who steal from the public purse. (Adlai Stevenson).
The secret enmity of a person whose mind is unreformed will lead to many evils causing disaffection among (one’s) relations. (Thirukkurahl – 884).
மனம்மாணா உட்பகை தோன்றின் இனம்மாணா
ஏதம் பலவும் தரும். (குறள் - 884).
          Manam-maahnaa vut-paghai thoandrin yinam-maahnaa
Yaedham palavum tharum. (Thirukkurahl – 884).
When the child is born and grows, it learns from its parents by looking at them and hearing them. Then at the school going age, the child learns from the teachers. The parents would always tell good things and do good things to their children. The teachers also would always teach good character building things and principles to the students. One aspect of education is to study a particular subject in depth and become an expert to develop it further. In addition to this, many students study topics which shape the character of the people. This should be studied by everyone.
Thus, we grow at the young age by looking at people who care for us, and listening to their words. If some other people tell something to us, we would think that it would also be good for us. But, some persons would tell something to spoil us, in an indirect way, which would appear to be good. The children do not know the mischievous plans. The students who do not study up to 12th standard are many. Such students may not have sufficient knowledge to know which is good or bad. These young persons are easily diverted and dragged into doing dangerous things. These common people are instigated to destroy the public property. They are utilized to carry out smuggling, drug related offences, and adulteration works. Those who instigate these offences could be considered as persons who do such things to hurt and destroy their own brothers and sisters. We should be aware such persons, who use the common people to destroy the nation, and protect from them; they should also be corrected.
Therefore, we should protect ourselves from such disguised criminals. To understand this, we should have education and know moral values. Let us stay away from dangerous persons; let us eliminate the dangers.

December 17.
352.  Wisdom is knowing when you can’t be wise. (Paul Engle).
Let a man learn thoroughly whatever he may learn, and let his conduct be worthy of his learning. (Thirukkurahl – 391).
கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின்
நிற்க அதற்குத் தக. (குறள் - 391).
Karkka kasadara(k) karpavai; karta-pin
Nirkka adharkku(th) thaga. (Thirukkurahl – 391).
Every one of us should get education. We should study as much as possible in the area of our interest. We should try to be an expert in that discipline. There are several possibilities to attain it. We should get the proper information from others. We should not think that others would voluntarily come out to help us. Only in times of danger, others would come forward to help. Even if some people refuse to help us, we should not abandon our efforts.
We should also be great in knowing the proper way to live. Only then we could be wise persons. This is easy for those who are good in studies. Such wise persons would help others in several ways. They would solve the troubles between people in a good way. In order to become a wise person, one should know the general practice and the situation as well. As told by Thiruvahlluvar, even saying a lie, at times, would be equated to the truth. There is a story in which a person, having a sword, was chasing another to attack him. The attacker lost track of the other and was trying to locate him. Even if we know the direction where one escaped, we should not tell the truth. At that time, it is good to direct the attacker in the opposite direction, even though it is a lie, to prevent him from attacking the other one; if we say the truth, the attacker would hurt or even kill the other; if that happens, both would be affected. Hence, realizing the situation, even telling a lie is good. If this is not realized, people will not be considered intelligent. Thus, even if we are aware of all the good principles, sometimes we have to deviate from that. Another category of persons would like to tell whatever they know to everyone. One should tell something to others only at the level of the listener. One would not teach a 5th standard student at 12th standard level. We have to live from the knowledge, as much as we have learned. However, we should act according to the circumstances. Only this is proper.
Hence, whatever may be our education, we should act according to the situation. It does not mean that one could choose a dangerous route in life. This thinking is wisdom.

December 18.
353.  If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich. (John F. Kennedy).
He who enjoys not (his riches) nor relieves the wants of the worthy is a disease to his wealth. (Thirukkurahl – 1006).
ஏதம் பெரும்செல்வம் தாந்துவ்வான் தக்கார்க்குஒன்று
ஈதல் இயல்பிலா தான். (குறள் - 1006).
          Yaedham perunj-selvam thaan-thuv-vaan thakkaarku-ondru
Yeedhal yiyalbilaa dhaan. (Thirukkurahl – 1006).
In a country, there will be people of various types, like educated and illiterate, and rich and poor. If the living standard of the poor people is up to a level, it is agreeable. It is not good, if more people are very poor. It would be good, if a poor person works for long hours to earn more to overcome the poverty; but, it is wrong to think of taking bad ways to earn more. Due to this, other people and the country are affected. This must be prevented.
The population of poor people is more in our country and some other countries in the world. Only if such people lead a good life, the country and we could be in good condition. Hence, the government should help the poor to get the essential things. The best way of help is to provide them job opportunities, and enhance their self confidence. This would make them feel good about the country. If this is not done, they would be disgusted about the country. If something is given free, they would not realize the value of the material, and tend to waste them. They would become lazy, and instigate others to be like that. The social organizations also should share the responsibility of the government. We feel sad to note the deceiving activities of some social service organizations; however, many organizations are doing good work. Our religious and other literatures tell us that it is a mean action to divert the materials, meant for poor people, for personal needs. Therefore, the government should involve in removing the misery of the poor. If it is not done, the poor people would lose their patience due to the pain of hunger. This should be avoided.
Hence, poverty of the country should be removed. If only some people lead a good life, that country will not be considered a good one. Let us work with the aim that everyone must progress.

December 19.
354.  Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. (John F. Kennedy).
In order to reply fearlessly before a foreign court, (ministers) should learn logic according to the rules of grammar. (Thirukkurahl – 725).
ஆற்றின் அளவறிந்து கற்க அவைஅஞ்சா
மாற்றம் கொடுத்தல் பொருட்டு. (குறள் - 725).
          Aartrin ahlavarindhu karkka avaiyanjaa
Maartram koduththar(p) poruttu. (Thirukkurahl – 725).
We should think first before doing anything. We should acquire the necessary materials, and understand the method before commencing a work. We should also be aware of removing any obstacles which may arise.
We should involve in a work which is appropriate to our capacity. Once we start the work, we should doubt about its success. In sports, we have to practice in different ways for different games. We should have no fear while doing the work. We should start the work with the thinking that we will succeed. Whether it is sports or speech competition, we need practice. When we practice, our fear will decrease and the courage will increase. When we are immersed in fear, our effort will not be at the highest level. When one of our five senses is fully involved, other senses would appear to be inactive. When we talk ferociously, our ears won’t hear anything else. When we focus our attention on something, other senses will not perform properly. When we are involved in running race or in dancing, for example, we will notice nothing else; if we notice something, our performance will go down.
Hence, if we do any work in fear, it will not be wholesome; we will not be able to present our points properly. If we do a work with the fear that we would be in danger if it is not done, we will lose our concentration and make mistakes. In the same way, there should not be any fear while doing a good work. Thus, unnecessary control and fear would affect the progress.

December 20.
355.  Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. (Martin Luther King Jr.).
The country o the king will daily fall to ruin, who does not daily examine into and punish (crimes). (Thirukkurahl – 553).
நாள்தொறும் நாடிமுறை செய்யா மன்னவன்
நாள்தொறும் நாடு கெடும். (குறள் - 553).
          Naahldhorum naadi murai-sey-yaa man-na-van
Naahldhorum naadu kedum. (Thirukkurahl – 553).
The character of the people will be different from one another. Their education and intelligence will be different. Due to this, their lifestyle would also be different. Some people will lead a respectable and honest life, whatever may be their situation. Some people would get self-pride due to their wealth, and live with arrogance. Some people would feel sad about their poverty, and venture to earn money by illegal methods to get rich. One should know as to what are the bad methods. One could read some books to know about it. One can hear from others and know about the bad things. The actions which cause misery to others are bad. There are many methods to punish the wrong doers. It is wrong if the culprits are not identified, or if they are let go by improper verification. It is also wrong to punish a person by arresting him on suspicion. Thus, there are several ways to err in the judiciary. Even though such mistakes occur only to a small extent at some place, one should try to prevent it. If this is not prevented, the offences and the culprits will be on the rise. In sports, the usage of drugs’ by even a few persons is wrong. It is a great danger if even unsuspected people cheat or spoil others. If a country has to earn a good name, one should make sure that no fault occurs. There are many persons in a country who involve in cheating others. The propagation of such culprits should be prevented.
Therefore, one should live a life which is permitted by good principles. This thought should prevail among all of us. The government also should take proper steps; if not, bad things will happen. Otherwise, a situation would arise wherein only those who indulge in doing bad things or mistakes would lead a comfortable life. One should realize this and act properly. Let us shape a good country and good people.

December 21.
356.  When poverty comes in at the door, love flies out the window. (Quotation)
He that is reduced to absolute poverty will be regarded as a stranger even by his own mother. (Thirukkurahl – 1047).
அறம்சாரா நல்குரவு ஈன்றதா யானும்
பிறன்போல நோக்கப் படும். (குறள் - 1047).
Aram-saaraa nalguravu eendra-thaa yaanum
Piranpoala noakkap padum. (Thirukkurahl – 1047).
Among people, some are rich and some are poor; many people are in the middle. Whatever may their level, everyone should be a good human being.
Those who live in poverty experience many obstacles. Many of them live without proper housing, dress and food. Such people realize their poor capacity and live with happiness from what they could get. The people who have this kind of thinking are great. They motivate their children to study well and toil for the good life of the children. People of this mentality would always be happy. Some people wish to earn more money by wrong routes, and spoil their life. By utilizing this kind of people, some others try to earn money by improper ways. Some poor people repent on their poverty, and get angry with others and abuse them, thereby losing the love from them. This results in losing the relatives and friends. Some people lose their life itself by getting punishments for their wrong deeds. They tend to steal due to poverty. They enter into the activities in spreading the ‘drugs’. They also involve in unthinkable offences which would destroy the society. Some middle class and rich people also intend to get more wealth, by doing wrong deeds, which is deplorable. It is said that hunger would destroy the ten good characters of a person. Desire and greed are more dangerous than hunger.
Hence, to preserve kindness, we should live with determination. Poverty and greed would spoil our mind; anger and hatred would increase. If we get angry, it will also destroy us. Hence, we should live with patience, kindness, and contentment under all circumstances. Let us help to eliminate the poverty of others as much as possible.

December 22.
357.  Sow a thought, and you reap an act; sow an act, and you reap a habit; sow a habit, and you reap a character; sow a character, and you reap a destiny. (Quotation)
The only delight of the perfect is that of their goodness; all other (sensual) delights are not to be included among (true) delights. (Thirukkurahl – 982).
குணநலம் சான்றோர் நலனே பிறநலம்
எந்நலத்து உள்ளதூஉம் அன்று. (குறள் - 982).
          Guhna-nalam saandrore nalanae; pira-nalam
          Yen-nala(th)thu uhlladhoo-um andru. (Thirukkurahl – 982).
Our country has progressed well in the last 50-60 years. To realize this, we should know how we lived, and what facilities were prevailing about 50 years ago. We should not think that we have developed to the full extent, and there is nothing we could do further.
There is a beginning for any action. The big rivers like Ganges, Kaveri and Yamuna are very small at the starting point. We presume that all the rivers would also be like that. The number of schools and the students, and the quality of education, which were started in small level, has grown to a great extent. Like this, we have progressed in many areas. If the growth has to be complete, people must be of good conduct. If it is not so, our good progressive efforts would end up in danger; it will go waste. Due to this reason, duplicate medicines are produced. Medicines and food items are sold beyond the expiry date. Thefts occur. Murders are also committed for property. The desire to acquire huge wealth arises. By making use of the people’s interest, they are deceived by the unethical persons. The life with love decreases. The desire over wealth increases, while hospitality decreases.
Therefore, in addition to the material growth, there should also be improvement in human value. If we have good character, the above said troubles would not arise. Our work would take shape as per our character. Our life would depend on our activity. Hence, let us improve our good conduct and live happily.

December 23.
358.  Climb high, climb far, your goal the sky, your aim the star. (Quotation)
In all that a king thinks of, let him think of his greatness; and if it should be thrust from him (by fate), it will have the nature of not being thrust from him. (Thirukkurahl – 596).
உள்ளுவது எல்லாம் உயர்வுஉள்ளல் மற்றுஅது
தள்ளினும் தள்ளாமை நீர்த்து. (குறள் - 596).
         Vuhlluvathu yellaam vuyar-vuhllal; martradhu
          Thahllinum thahllaamai neer(th)thu. (Thirukkurahl – 596).
We should all have the thinking of attaining great heights in our life. When we get a suitable opportunity, we should utilize it. Until then, we should keep on upgrading our capability. When we first enter into a job, it should be at a fairly high position, as much as possible.
When a baby starts walking, it will keep on walking without sitting; even if someone wants to carry the baby, it would dislike it, and start to walk again. It would feel happy by climbing on higher places like windows, tables and chairs. Most of the babies would do like this. However, its interest declines while growing. Only some children grow well with education and get good jobs. The reason for this is the environment and encouragement that the child gets at the young age. All of us think only one thing. We should encourage the children into sports also, in addition to the education. If one is good in any of the sports at the district or state level, it would be valuable for doing higher education, or to get a job; it would facilitate to get a job in a good organization, and to rise in life. The students in rural areas should get training in areas like swimming, long jump, high jump, gymnastics, and athletics; such people have the chance of becoming world level sports persons.
Therefore, there are several opportunities for a person to become great in life. If parents, teachers, or friends who are capable of encouraging the young persons are available, their ambition would increase and get proper opportunities to reach high levels. These opportunities would be possible, only if the parents are good people. If the parents are involved in doing bad things, others would be hesitant to extend any help. Therefore, if the children are to become great, the parents have to be persons of good conduct.

December 24.
359.  Never say more than is necessary. (Richard B. Sheridan).
Understand the qualities (of your hearers) and (then make) your speech; for superior to it, there is neither virtue nor wealth. (Thirukkurahl – 644).
திறநறிந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லை அறனும்
பொருளும் அதனின்ஊங்கு இல். (குறள் -644).
          Thiranarindhu solluga sollai aranum
Poruhlum adhanin-oongu yil. (Thirukkurahl – 644).
We have to show our capability in our performance. Only then others would know our ability. If it is known, we would get respect, appreciation and dignity.
The intention of conducting an examination to the students is to find out the level of their knowledge. Hence, one should write a suitable answer for questions; at certain times, they should tell the answer in a good way. While writing, it should be completed within the stipulated time without any mistake. While speaking, the proper words have to be used and pronounced correctly. One should participate in oratory and essay writing competitions. For this purpose, one should read many books. If one shines well in the young age, he could achieve great heights in higher education. Those who develop such capability would become intelligent and also wise persons. The leaders, teachers, head of industries, and those occupying responsible positions would, in general, talk only in a limited way. Instead of that, if they talk more, there is a possibility of making mistakes. Even if one word is wrongly used, that would turn out to be a seed for the downtrend. Even by the instigation of others, one should not talk wrongly or more. To prevent improper speech, we should adhere to steadiness peace. Anger and disgust would destroy peaceful atmosphere. Wise persons tell that it is good to practice yoga to control anger. One should not be of the opinion that yoga is meant for only older people.
Hence, there is a limit for everything. If we consume more food, our stomach gets damaged first; then one becomes fat, which leads to a lot of troubles. The excess food in the digestion process goes waste and excreted. In the same way, if we talk more, the speech would lose its value, and damage our fame. Hence, let us talk properly adhering to the limit, and be honorable.

December 25.
360.  I had to grow old to learn what I wanted to know, and I should need to be young to say well what I know. (Joseph Joubert).
If there be those who can speak, on various subjects in their proper order and in a pleasing manner, the world would readily accept them. (Thirukkurahl – 648).
          விரைந்து தொழில்கேட்கும் ஞாலம் நிரந்துஇனிது
          சொல்லுதல் வல்லார்ப் பெறின். (குறள் - 648).

Viryyndhu thozhil-kaetkum gnaalam niranth-inidhu
          Solluthal val-laar(p) perin. (Thirukkurahl – 648).
Every one of us should have the thinking that all of us have to be good in life. This thinking must be put in action. There is no use in sitting quiet at home telling that whatever happens is for good. Only if we walk, it will be good for our health. In the same way, any good work has to be executed with interest, and completed at the right time, without stopping it at the planning stage itself.
When studying in school, one should go to the higher class at the proper time. If a child starts to walk only at the age of 5, instead of 1, everyone would be worrying about it. If a person completes his school education at the age of 25, instead of 15-16, he would not get any good job. Hence, one should gain good knowledge within a reasonable time, and help the society in a good way. At the old age, our memory power, physical strength, and the power of our five senses would all wane. Therefore, we have to good things before our energy decreases. It is not proper, if we think of doing good service after our retirement around the age of 60. Only if we excel at the young age, we can lead a good life till old age, and help the family and society in various good ways. We would get a doubt as soon as we contemplate on a good thing at the old age; we would worry about its continuity after our time, which would prevent us from initiating the work itself.
Therefore, one should do any good thing from the young age itself. Whoever gets this mature thought and performs it from the young age, they would shine well and develop the country. Such persons are essential in every discipline. Only if a person gets a Ph.D. degree in the age of 25-30 years, he could help other students to get the Ph.D. degree. If a person gets the Ph.D. degree at the age of 50 years, it would not be beneficial to other students to the full extent. Hence, let us excel from the young age itself.

December 6.
341.  Humility is the most difficult of all virtues to achieve; nothing dies harder than the desire to think well of oneself. (Thomas Eliot).
More lofty than a mountain will be the greatness of that man who, without swerving from his proper state, controls himself. (Thirukkurahl – 124).
நிலையின் திரியாது அடங்கியான் தோற்றம்
மலையினும் மாணப் பெரிது. (குறள் - 124).
          Nilaiyil thiriyaadhu adanghiyaan thoartram
          Malaiyinum maahna(p) peridhu. (Thirukkurahl – 124).
Everyone would be wondering as to who should be considered as successful persons in life. Those who were once poor, and later became rich to enjoy all the comforts, could be considered as successful persons. One should think how it was possible for them to appear like that.
Education is essential for a successful life. Some may not shine well academically. They should involve in technical work with interest. Development does not mean that one should have more wealth than others. Such thoughts would induce them to enter into wrong business practices. To achieve this, they would destroy and deceive many people. If a person develops his life by spoiling others, that life would never be pleasant and dignified. One should know the things which could bring in self-pride. If education, physical strength, profession and man-power are present to some extent, that person would become arrogant. They would think proud of themselves. Then they would insult others. They would move around with arrogance, telling that there is no one as intelligent as they are. If a business is done with integrity and honesty, only limited wealth could be obtained. Such people who earn in proper ways would never boast of themselves. The one who studied properly and employed, would not boast of himself. Those who studied philosophy along with their good education would never be arrogant. One should avoid the various ways of getting self-pride.
Therefore, we should think of the development in life. One should work in a just way. We should attain the higher level, according to our capability. We should never boast of our achievements. However, one can say the methods of achievements to motivate others. Hence, let us live with honesty and kindness. Where there is kindness, arrogance will not arise; let us respect kindness.

December 7.
342.  Tradition cannot be inherited, and if you want it you must obtain it by great labor. (Thomas Eliot).
The world applauds the character of those whose usefulness results from their equity and charity. (Thirukkurahl – 994).
நயனொடு நன்றி புரிந்த பயனுடையார்
பண்புபா ராட்டும் உலகு. (குறள் - 994).
          Nayanodu nandri purindha payanudaiyaar
          Pahnbu-paa raattum vulaghu. (Thirukkurahl – 994).
The way of life would be different for each person. Many people would lead a life without any aim, and without any worry. They would do whatever work they could get, and live with the income from that. No harm occurs to anybody due to them. The deficiency faced by them is met by government, some individuals and some social organizations. Some of such poor people commit small crimes; petty thefts, cheatings are done by them. If these things are not committed, the country would get a good name.
Some people want to enjoy a comfortable life by deceiving poor and rich people in a large scale. Due to this, some families are affected. Another group of people involve in dangerous activities which would destroy a country, and in spreading the ‘drugs’, which would destroy the society, thereby damaging the country and world. This has spread throughout the world. Such people should read the philosophical books, and stop their activities. They should think of the ultimate value of their wealth, earned in millions, by such methods. We should be an example for others in the world by leading a dignified life, since we are in a country wherein a lot of philosophical literature, stories and books are available. What is the use of telling about the past, when the people lived with good character? Since our ancestors in each generation led a life of good value, those good habits are in existence even now. Only if we follow the good principles of life now, they will continue to exist even after our generation. If we don’t do like that, the bad things would increase while the good things decrease, in the next 50 years. It is easy for a person to get spoiled; going down is easy. But, to protect the good character is difficult. Only by those who do difficult work successfully, the family, village, the city, the country and the world see developments.
Hence, let us do good things. Let us protect good characters. Let us participate in the development of the country.

December 8.
343.  The great weakness of pragmatism is that it ends by being of no use to anybody. (Thomas Eliot).
The fool will not perform (his duties) even when advised nor ascertain them himself; such a soul is a burden (to the earth) till it departs (from the body). (Thirukkurahl – 848).
ஏவவும் செய்கலான் தான்தேறான் அவ்வுயிர்
போஒம் அளவும்ஓர் நோய். (குறள் - 848).
          Yaevavum seigalaan; thaan-thaeraan; av-vuyir
          Poa-vomm ahlavum-ore noai. (Thirukkurahl – 848).
We should have full involvement in our work. If it is no like that, our effort would not be successful. Involvement means the way we do our work, taking into consideration of how to do the work, in how much time it should be completed, and what are the criteria needed for it. Another type of people would only think of doing the work; but, they would fail to achieve it, since they don’t know the procedure; their stubbornness alone would remain.
Therefore, carrying out a work, and discussing about a topic with proper knowledge only would end well. If a work is performed with knowledge, it is possible to bring in further developments by listening to other experts. It is not proper to disregard good suggestions offered at the right time. During arguments/discussions, there is an opportunity to know the nature of the material or principle to a full extent. Good points must be accepted. In some cases, the opinions of the learned persons must be accepted. In some cases, the suggestions of the much experienced persons must be heard. In villages, the suggestions of the experienced farmers must be considered. In research, sometimes good suggestions might emanate from the students. Such students would turn out to be great achievers in the future. It is said that whoever possesses the knowledge and character of elders at the young age, would become wise persons later.
Hence, there should be full involvement in action and speech. However, good points must be welcomed. If we think our ideas and decisions are great, such actions would not proceed properly; sometimes, the action itself would be a waste. Let us give way to good suggestions.

December 9.
344.  Fear cannot be banished, but it can be calm and without panic; and it can be mitigated by reason and evaluation. (Vannevar Bush).
The wise are those who know beforehand what will happen; those who do not know this are the unwise. (Thirukkurahl – 427).
அறிவுடையார் ஆவது அறிவார் அறிவிலார்
அஃ தஅறி கல்லா தவர். (குறள் - 427).
          Arivudaiyaar aavadhu arivaar; arivilaar
Agdhari kallaa thavar. (Thirukkurahl – 427).
In our childhood days, we would do everything without any fear. It is because we do not know which is good, and which is bad. When we are young children, we get fear at the time our thinking goes beyond our capacity. The anxiety about a possible danger results in fear. One should think of a remedy to overcome the anxiety. Such thinking prior to the execution of the work is intelligence.
Hence, if we fear on something, it should be considered as the first step to plan the action. But, without proper plans if we remain with fear, we would never succeed in life. When an examination is approaching, we should have the fear that if we do not get high marks we would not get good job. Only then one would read properly. In the cricket game, we wear helmet and other pads to protect ourselves, due to the fear of getting hurt by fast bowling. We fix safety gadgets to our house and vehicles, due to the fear of theft. We take precautionary steps to prevent the babies and children due to the fear of getting some diseases, and give them preventive medicines and injections. We should be afraid of the diseases and realize the value of good sanitary conditions. Thus, we have to be cautious and aware of things in all of our efforts. We should not remain quietly without doing anything out of fear. Everyone would have the fear of drowning, if fallen in water. But, it is good to learn swimming, and remove the fear of water.
Thus, one will get fear by nature. Only due to this, we have invented many safety methods. It would be beneficial to find out the reason for the fear, and act appropriately. Let us conquer fear.

December 10.
345.  The republic was not established by cowards, and cowards will not preserve it. (Elmer Davis).
If the fool, who knows not how to act, undertakes a work, he will (certainly) fail, (but) is it all? He will even adorn himself with fetters. (Thirukkurahl – 836).
பொய்படும் ஒன்றோ புனைபூணும் கையறியாப்
பேதை வினைமேல் கொளின். (குறள் - 836).
          Poip-padum one-droa? Punai-poohnum kai-yariyaa(p)
          Paedhai vinai-maer kohlin. (Thirukkurahl – 836).
People could be grouped into coward and courageous persons. The coward people would not do any work properly. They would be like slaves, and always fearing on the threats of bad people. Such people are kept in bondage and used to spread dangerous activities.
People should be courageous. They should put forward their good principles and opinions. Violence should not be used for that purpose. If violence increases, the growth is not possible. The required changes in a country should be brought about peacefully, with the cooperation of the people. We should think whether we damage the materials in the house or the house, to achieve what we want in the family. We tolerate the loss of a valuable article, if it is broken in our house; no one would break any object purposefully; if it happens by mistake, we don’t punish our children or the elders. But, if anything happens in a hospital, some persons involve in hurting the doctor and damaging the medical facility. Such misdeeds should not be carried out on the doctor and hospital, which serves and cures thousands of people. The faults, if any, should be corrected in a good way. Those who are wise and knowledgeable would think calmly and involve in their work. Others indulge in violence through instigation by some persons. This should be realized by such people.
Therefore, common people should not listen to the instigations by others. The common people should get good education and develop good character, to protect the country’s growth. The strength of knowledge is stronger than the physical strength. Let us realize that education would strengthen our mind power.

December 11.
346.  Nothing great will ever be achieved without great men, and men are great only if they are determined to be so. (Charles de Gaulle).
Let a king ponder well its value, and secure the friendship of men of virtue and of mature knowledge. (Thirukkurahl – 441).
அறன்அறிந்து மூத்த அறிவுடையார் கேண்மை
திறன்அறிந்து தேர்ந்து கொளல். (குறள் - 441).
          Aran-arindhu moo(th)tha arivudaiyaar kaehnmai
          Thiran-arindhu thaern-dhu kohlal. (Thirukkurahl – 441).
We have to analyze about a work in various angles before starting it, if we have to successfully complete it. The work must be completed within the stipulated time, employing qualified persons. In order to think like this, one should have education and social service attitude. Those who don’t have the service attitude would not understand the value of the work.
In order to construct a dam, one should plan about the materials required, manpower, and the duration, to execute the work. Common people would not realize the need of the dam, and discard the proposal, citing poor financial condition as the reason. However, great people would consider the long-range benefits of the project to the society, and complete the work. Nobody calculates the money required for bringing up a child and saves the amount, before getting a child. One needs willpower and sufficient practice to win a game. One should not venture in a competition or action with negative thought. Great people would always maintain patience; they would not destroy their energy and fame by getting angry; they would not deviate from the just and righteous pathway; they would not involve in speeches and activities which could degrade them.
Hence, only great people would be able to do great things. Common people will waste their time due to wear, and lacking willpower and confidence. Therefore, let us wish for the good work to be carried out by great persons.

December 12.
347.  Humility must always be the portion of any man who receives acclaim earned in the blood of his followers and the sacrifices of his friends. (Dwight D. Eisenhower).
Let (a king) procure and kindly care for men who can overcome difficulties when they occur, and guard against them before they happen. (Thirukkurahl – 442).
உற்றநோய் நீக்கி உறாஅமை முற்காக்கும்
பெற்றியார்ப் பேணிக் கொளல். (குறள் - 442).
         Vurtrra-noai neekki vuraa-amai mur-kaakkum
          Perti-yaar(p) paehni(k) kohlal. (Thirukkurahl – 442).
If a country has to be a good one, its people must have good character. In the present situation, it would be difficult to find such a country. The defaulters increase. Small crimes magnify into big ones and result in damages. The number of wrong-doers should decrease. Patience should improve among the people.
This was written on the day celebrated as ‘World Tolerance Day’ (November 16). If this tolerance is present in the minds of people, there would no animosity between people in a family, village, town and neighboring states. If there is tolerance, we would ignore small mistakes done by others. If such persons do a work jointly, it would succeed. That success would make everyone happy. Instead of that, if the leader takes the full credit, it is not proper. The efforts and contributions of others should be gracefully and appropriately acknowledged. Even if his contribution is more, a great person would not show self-esteem and be humble. Hence, one should be more humble, if the work was performed with the help of others. If not, when the truth is known at a later date, we would be embarrassed, get angry, and lose the patience leading to bad thoughts; this would further put us in the group of ‘dangerous people’. Just like a small fire induces a big fire, our impoliteness would become the seed for big damages.
Therefore, just like small drops make a flood, we should improve our character and increase the goodness. To make an object, it might require many days, months and years; but, it could be destroyed in a second. Let us realize this and live with dignity and humility.

December 13.
348.  It is not the function of our Government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the Government from falling into error. (Robert H. Jackson).
The king who gives not facile audience (to those who approach him), and who does not examine and pass judgement (on their complaints), will perish in disgrace. (Thirukkurahl – 548).
எண்பதத்தான் ஓரா முறைசெய்யா மன்னவன்
தண்பதத்தான் தானே கெடும். (குறள் - 548).
          Yehn-padha(th)thaan oaraa murai-seiyaa man-navan
          Thahn-padh(th)thaan thaanae kedum. (Thirukkurahl – 548).
We could say that a family and a government are alike in many aspects. The head of a family and the head of a country may have to do similar duties. A family should be a comfortable one. A country has to be prosperous one. A government’s responsibility is to put the country in the top level of the world. The responsibility of the head of a family is to give good education to the children and help them to progress in life. Thus, there are many common things between the two.
There are many good ministers in a government to rule the country. For a family, there should be good friends and relatives. Even under this circumstance, the children take a wrong route and spoil the prestige of the family. The parents should prevent this. It is not simple to prevent the people of a country from doing wrong deeds. There are certain rules and regulations to punish the culprits. A country should have good people. To achieve this, the people should read good books, and adhere to the principles. In the present situation, the people can change the government. It is the duty of the government to provide good governance to the people, and acquire the friendship of other countries. The people should learn the good principles and character by themselves. The public money should not be stashed away, and the prescribed work must be completed properly. People should adhere to the truth, and work with the aim. We never destroy our household things, due to a misunderstanding in the family; but, we destroy the public properties. This should be avoided. The uneducated and ignorant people must be reminded of this.
Hence, a family and a government are alike. The grievances in a family are not removed by a fight. The same attitude must be present at the government level also. People should shape a good government. Let us live as dignified people.

December 14.
349.  Life has no meaning except in terms of responsibility. (Reinhold Niebuhr).
The Deity will clothe itself and appear before him who resolves on raising his family. (Thirukkurahl – 1023).
குடிசெய்வல் என்னும் ஒருவற்குத் தெய்வம்
மடிதற்றுத் தான்முந் துறும். (குறள் - 1023).
          Kudi-seival yen-num oruvarkku(th) theivam
          Madi-thartru(th) thaan-mun dhurum. (Thirukkurahl – 1023).
Our religious books tell that it is fortunate to be born as a human being, and is further enhanced to live with good conduct. This is due to our sixth sense. This helps us to think and act accordingly, and help others. We have accomplished very much in areas such as industry, science and medicine, and also extend our help to others. We are providing the people in the world the benefits of our inventions. The people are taught good conducts.
All the above things are made possible by the educated persons. All others do as they are told. Thus, everyone does some work or other. Whatever work is done, it must be done properly and completed. That responsibility should never be neglected. If the responsibility is forgotten, there would be a delay in completing the work. The ‘delay’ is the seed for corruption. This invokes a desire for money. This desire resides in many people, and the transactions take place in little and big ways. Thus, we are responsible for the country’s bad name, due to our irresponsible attitude in our work. We like to earn more than our capacity, and spend more than our income; this makes us to look for other sources of income, which affects our responsibility in the work. Whatever amount of wealth we acquire, we can enjoy only to an extent. We should not hurt others in order accumulate it. If everyone works with responsibility, nobody would intend to destroy anything. Would we destroy a plant which we planted? Would we destroy the house which we built? Would we break the car or other vehicle, which we bought? Would we hurt our parents, who gave birth to us? In the same way, we should protect our country’s properties and wealth.
Hence, let us realize the ‘responsibility’ which is the seed for our prosperous life, and work towards it.

December 15.
350.  There is no substitute for talent. Industry and all the virtues are of no avail. (Aldous Huxley).
Those who possess wisdom, possess everything; those who have not wisdom, whatever they may possess, have nothing. (Thirukkurahl – 430).
அறிவுடையார் எல்லாம் உடையார் அறிவிலார்
என்னுடைய ரேனும் இலர். (குறள் - 430).
         Arivudaiyaar yellaam vudaiyaar; arivilaar
          Yen-nudaiya raenum yilar. (Thirukkurahl – 430).
All of us should have the thinking that we should progress in life, and our country also should develop, and work for it. This thought should be present in everyone’s mind. One should not think that he alone should be benefitted. Such selfish thought would induce wrong actions. If such wrong actions increase, one would tend to hurt and destroy others. Hence, we should live with good thoughts.
One should have aspiration and capacity to succeed in life. Talent is also needed. A work can be completed by appointing a talented person. Some industrialists would think of replacing a talented person with an ordinary one, after a few years of service. The effect of such a decision would be known after a few years. A hospital should have a good doctor at all times. When a good doctor leaves that hospital, it would become less popular. Without good teachers, the schools and colleges would not be great. In a car industry, if even one car is bad, it would affect the good name of the industry. In the absence of talented persons, there would be no development in any work. If people work at the same level, like machines, they would lose their strength and wane like machines, resulting in poor performance. Even if we intend to give quality products, it would not be possible; this would reflect in the form of bad name for us, since the world would think that we cheat the public.
Therefore, we should develop talent. We should not lose talented persons for any reason. Nothing could replace talent. Let us recognize talent and appreciate it.

December 1.
336.  There are two cardinal sins from which all others spring: impatience and laziness. (Franz Kafka).
The (luster of the) family of the ignorant man, who acts under the influence of destructive laziness, will perish even before he is dead. (Thirukkurahl – 603).
மடிமடிக் கொண்டொழுகும் பேதை பிறந்த
குடிமடியும் தன்னினும் முந்து. (குறள் - 603).
          Madi-madi(k) kohnd-ozhugum paedhai pirandha
          Kudi-madiyum thun-ninum mundhu. (Thirukkurahl – 603).
We should think about the requirements such as the material needs, the procedure, and the manpower before the commencement of a work. The work can be started after gathering these things. Some materials could be bought for use while the work is being carried out. These arrangements are pertinent to materials. In the same way, a person also should possess certain characters for existence.
‘Patience’ is essential for those who perform the work.  Laziness should not be there. If a person is calm, he should not be considered as a lazy one. While crossing a road, one should not run; after making sure that no vehicle is approaching, one should walk fast to cross the road. While walking on the road or platform, one should not walk slowly as is done at home. If we walk slowly in public pathways, we obstruct others from a speed walk. We should not create obstacles to others. Laziness and the thought of postponement of a work would hinder our progress. A work should be completed within the stipulated time. During our travel, if a vehicle ahead of us goes slowly, we get angry. But, when we do the same thing, we never realize the fault. A plane should gain a determined speed on the runway, within the stipulated time, in order to take off. Life is also like that. The two-wheelers, which go in speeds above the limit, get involved in accidents. This speed control is the one which is required as ‘patience’ in life. A great patience is required for intricate and knowledge-based works. When an examination is written in haste, many errors would occur and the hand writing would become illegible, making it confusing. If patience decreases, anger would erupt which damages the pride of a person; the energy also would be lost.
Hence, let us adhere to ‘patience’ and enhance our pride. Let us discard the laziness and become great.

December 2.
337.  We must build a new world, a far better world – one in which the eternal dignity of man is respected. (Harry S. Truman).
There is nothing that stands forth in the world imperishable, except fame, exalted in solitary greatness. (Thirukkurahl – 233).
ஒன்றா உலகத்து உயர்ந்து புகழல்லால்
பொன்றாது நிற்பதொன்று இல். (குறள் - 233).
          Ondraa vulaga(th)thu vuyarndha pugazh-al-laal
Pondraadhu nirpathondru yill. (Thirukkurahl – 233).
We should know the principles of life from the things surrounding us. We sow the seeds; it grows into plants, and then flowering takes place; it yields vegetables and fruits, as the case may be. Some plants grow into trees and then they yield the respective fruits. Then we get the seeds from plants and trees. The seeds grow again and the cycle continues, to benefit the people and other things.
We know that we are born as babies, grow into children, adults, and elders, and finally die. During our growing age and working period, we benefit a lot and enjoy various facilities. Now, most of us enjoy the facilities which were feasible only to a few persons, about 50 years ago. We never think of those who are responsible for this development, and who first invented such things. But, we indulge in finding fault with that. Our growth has been enormous in the last 50 years, in areas such as medicine, industry, electricity, telephone, space research, and food production. Our grandparents, and even parents, lived without electricity. They lived without sufficient food and medical facilities. They had to walk for 10-20 KM, without road and transport facilities. We should think of those who made these things possible to us.
Hence, we should think further in that line and work towards it. Some plants give only flowers. Some plants yield vegetables and/or fruits; some plants grow into trees to be useful in many ways. Thus, they are helping us in various ways, depending on their capacity. Likewise, people should work according to their capacity to develop the country. Let us cut down our fault finding attitude; let us do great work.

338.  The health of nations is more important than the wealth of nations. (Will Durant).
Freedom from epidemics, wealth, produce, happiness, and protection (to subjects): these five, the learned say, are the ornaments of a kingdom. (Thirukkurahl – 738).
பிணியின்மை செல்வம் விளைவின்பம் ஏமம்
அணியென்ப நாட்டிற்குஇவ் ஐந்து. (குறள் - 738).
          Pihni-yinmai selvam vihlaiv(u)-inbam yaemam
          Ahni-yenba naattirkk(u)-yiv aindhu. (Thirukkurahl – 738).
We can divide the development of the world into two groups. One is material growth; the other growth is in the human nature. The material growth gives us the facilities for our living. The other one (maturity) promotes good thoughts in us. It would be good if we have both the developments.
Let us now look into the material growth. In cities we have millions of two-wheelers, cars and buses. Rules have been framed to streamline the vehicle movement on the roads. Following the rules depends on the development of human nature. Those who do not adhere to the rules, and cause accidents are to be considered as immature persons. These people are responsible for the damages and losses to the country. We need food for the growth of the body. Production of more food materials is material growth. It is not proper to consume more food than is required. The country will prosper by the people, who consume food of proper energy, and utilize their strength for good purposes. But, if that strength is used to destroy others, it would mean destruction to the country. Such persons are considered immature. We need wealth to lead a good life with various comforts. One should earn it by good ways and live. This would raise a country’s dignity. Instead of that, stealing others’ properties, sparing money by improper execution of public works, getting ransom by kidnaps, and earning by selling dangerous substances which spoil the health of the people are wrongful activities. These people are immature ones.
Therefore, whatever may be the material development, a country would be considered good only if people of good character are there. In the epic Mahabharatham, the king Dhuryodhanan wanted materials; Arjunan wanted the association of Lord Krishna. Dhuryodhanan, who wanted only materials, perished; Arjunan got victory. Hence, people who earn by proper ways and spend in proper ways would shape a country into a good one. Let us respect the good characters which stood for thousands of years, and follow them.

339.  Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. (George S. Patton).
The method of performance for one who has begun an act is to ascertain the mind of him who knows the secret thereof. (Thirukkurahl – 677).
செய்வினை செய்வான் செயல்முறை அவ்வினை
உள்ளறிவான் உள்ளம் கொளல். (குறள் - 677).
          Seivinai seivaan seyal-murai av-vinai
Vuhllarivaan vuhllam kohlal. (Thirukkurahl – 677).
There are several ways to pursue education. First we learn from teachers. Then we read appropriate books, and learn from them. We see others doing a work, and by seeing it and repeating the same we learn the procedure to do certain things. Many people stop their aim with that level. A country is developed only by those whose aim is above the aforesaid methods.
Whatever work is carried out, one should know first the procedure to do it. One approach is to know and adhere to the rules and regulations, and act accordingly. Another approach involves trying a modified method or a new method, based on the intelligence of the person, after understanding the existing method. The first method helps us to make the products in large quantities. The second method helps us to maintain the materials to last long. The third approach leads to the changes and development. For example, an energetic light wave called LASER was invented, which is now used for doing intricate surgeries. The developments in areas like eye surgery, heart surgery, brain surgery, new medicines, electrical appliances and machineries are enormous.
Thus, when we do a work, there is a possibility to get a better product. Based on this, we are able to get improved machines, planes that could travel for 15-16 hours non-stop and carrying about 500-600 people, big ships and submarines. The electricity can be transported from one end to the other end of the country. Hence, the head of a team need only to tell the aim, but never need to order them. Those who do the work should know their responsibility. If the responsibility is realized, the respect would go up.

340.  The only wisdom we can hope to acquire is the wisdom of humility; humility is endless. (Thomas Eliot).
Let self-control be guarded as a treasure; there is no greater source of good for man than that. (Thirukkurahl – 122).
காக்க பொருளா அடக்கத்தை ஆக்கம்
அதனினூங்கு இல்லை உயிர்க்கு. (குறள் - 122).
          Kaakka poruhlaa adakka(th)thai; aakkam
          Adhanin-oonghu yillai vuyirkku. (Thirukkurahl – 122).
It is commonly said that life is like a wheel, as an example. Since the wheel is round in shape, one cannot tell where the beginning is or the end is. If it is rotated, the point at the bottom would go up, and down and up again; similarly, the point at the top would go down, and up and down again. This is said to make one realize that people would not remain at the same place all the time.
One should realize that no one would remain at the lower rung at all times, and no one would remain permanently at the top. Hence, we should not insult or downgrade those who might be in lower strata, in life than us. If we always think of our own prestige, we might lose our self-control, and use undignified words in our speech. There is no use of repenting after telling such things. Many examples can be mentioned on this line. One cannot retrieve the spilled water. A broken glass cannot be brought to the original state. One cannot eat the food material once it comes out of the mouth. Hence, we should live without self-pride. Self-pride is the seed for arrogance. Once a seed becomes a plant or tree, it gives enormous amount of the same seed. Therefore, it is bad to sow such dangerous seed. For sprouting of a seed, water, soil and light are needed. These would be available through the people around us. Just like wind and water help for spreading the seed, our self-pride would go to many places; it may appear even after some time.
Therefore, self-pride should be avoided. For this, our speech is an important pathway. To control it, our teeth and lips help us. We should be aware of the speech which passes through these barriers, and control it. We should not forget that there are people, who are superior to us, and our knowledge would decline and vanish over the years. If we live with self-control, our name would remain for a long time. Therefore, let us avoid self-pride.
