March 26.

Go on, my friend, and fear nothing; you carry Caesar and his fortune in your boat. (Julius Caesar, 100 B.C.).

If those who have planned (an undertaking) possess firmness (in executing it), they will obtain what they have desired even as they have desired it. (Thirukkurahl – 666).
        Yehnniya yehnniyaanghu yeidhubha yehnniyaar
        Thihnniyar aaga(p) perin. (Thirukkurahl – 666).

We all must do, whatever may be the work, with confidence and determination. When we start a work with the aim of accomplishing our lofty goal, some people may like to thrash it. Such people will approach us and undervalue the work, and also scare us with some troubles in doing the job. Under such circumstances, we should be steadfast in our aim, and do the work with determination. During student days, if one thinks of becoming an engineer, he should take the required course, study well and get high grades. Some people may discourage it, by telling drawbacks of the course, like unemployment. We should not get dejected by such words. We must complete the course with high grades and fulfill our lofty aim.

During a travel, one person kept on praising business, while underestimating the education. However, he kept quiet when he was asked whether he kept all the children at home, without sending them to school. Therefore, if we notice that some people try to prevent our good steps, we should be cautious and continue our work. We should have faith in our success, and work accordingly with full confidence.

March 27.

The ring on the finger becomes thin beneath by wearing, the fall of dripping water hollows the stone. (Lucretius 50 B.C.).

Let none be despised for (their) size; (for) the world has those who resemble the linch-pin of the big rolling car. (Thirukkurahl – 667).
                    Vuruvu-kahndu yehllaamai vaehndum; vuruhl-perunthaerkku
Achchaahni annaar vudaiththu. (Thirukkurahl – 667).

All of us must work with great aims in our life. Even if we could not reach the top place, we could at least reach near that place. To reach this top place, we have to work hard. We should not remain idle, without any effort, thinking that it would be impossible for us to do such work. There is a saying: “Even movement of ant will erode a rock”. In villages, the foot-path will be clear, due to frequent usage by the people, in the land or mountain routes. We don’t realize how our foot-wears gradually get worn out due to our walk. That is, there is an effect for every action. If we keep doing some work, we gain experience and become experts. There is nothing impossible, if we focus our attention and work well steadily.

The scientist, Prof. R.B.Woodward, achieved several syntheses of difficult and complicated compounds in chemistry; he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for his continuous great work. The great mathematician of India, Mr.Ramanujam, was a prodigy. There are so many other people like this in the world, who achieved great things by hard and devoted work.

Therefore, we should have the determination and steadfastness in the good work which we take as our aim, and complete it.

March 28.

But if one should guide his life by true principles, man’s greatest wealth is to live on a little with contented mind; for a little is never lacking. (Lucritius, 50 B.C.).

If a man thoroughly cuts off all desire, the deeds, which confer immortality, will come to him, in the path in which he seeks them. (Thirukkurahl – 367).
                      Avaavinai aartra aruppin thavaavinai
                      Thaan-vaehndum aartraan varum. (Thirukkurahl – 367).

All of us must have great aims. But, we should not have high desires. Aim will improve our capability. The desire will undermine our knowledge, make us proceed in a wrong path instigated by our feelings of the mind, and spoil us. If we focus our desire on wealth, and material things, we will be tempted to follow wrong routes, with the intention of getting them quickly. People who deceive others may become rich soon. Those who have no desire over wealth and objects, lead a simple and happy life. Respectable and true life is the one, wherein, people work honestly and live with appropriate comforts, within their income. We often hear the words: “Don’t wander as per the mind”. But, many of us don’t follow that.

If we want to go to other countries and work there, we have to select a suitable subject and study it well, and also gain suitable experience. Instead, some people get deceived by wrong approaches. The reason for this is that we tend to increase our eagerness, instead of developing our capability. The deceivers take advantage of our weakness and deceive us to the extent of their strength and our weakness.

Therefore, our desire must be kept within the limits of our knowledge and capability. That is the ideal life. Even if we have little resource, we should live contented life within that amount.

March 29.

There is nothing more silly than a silly laugh. (Catullus, 50 B.C.).

A fool happening to possess something is like the intoxication of one who is (already) giddy. (Thirukkurahl – 838).
                    Myyal oruvan kahli(th)-thartraal paedhai-dhan
                    Kai(y)-ondru vudamai perin. (Thirukkurahl – 838).

Many of us would have heard that ‘a smile’ is a valuable ornament to the face. According to doctors, the smile which we get due to happiness helps our facial tissues to become healthier and the face beautiful. Hence, smiling and laughing give us healthy life. We hear that there are different types of laughs. If it comes due to happiness, it is good. A sarcastic smile is not due to happiness; it is the reaction of some mean persons, who insult others’ work and activities, and think themselves as great people.

It is wrong to consider others as inferior. It is better to help others, if possible, to come up in life. If it is not possible to do such help, at least one should restrain himself, from making silly comments. The great and wise people will involve themselves in the uplift of others. But, unwise people will use their time in criticizing others. In the school, if some students get low marks/grades, or don’t give proper answers to the questions, other students should not laugh at them; it is a mean action.

Therefore, everyone must respect others.

March 30.

All our power lies in both mind and body; we employ the mind to rule, the body rather to serve; the one we have in common with the Gods, the other with the brutes. (Sallust, 50 B.C.).

Firmness in action is (simply) one’s firmness of mind; all other abilities are not of this nature. (Thirukkurahl – 661).
                   Vinai(th)-thitpam yenbadhu oruvan mana(th)-thitpam
Martaiya yellaam pira. (Thirukkurahl – 661).

For a healthy mind, there should be a healthy body. If a person is sick, he will always be thinking about it and feeling sad. He cannot concentrate his mind in other important works. If full attention is not given to a work, it will lead to many errors, and will be incomplete. The worker will not get a good name either.
A good health is very important to the students, during their studies. During illness, the students cannot devote their attention to studies, to the full extent; their marks/grades will go down. If they fail, their future is affected. If their health is good, their achievement will be more; they will be successful. If they have good health and healthy mind, they become scholars.
One cannot lead a respectable life with physical strength alone. The physical strength will not be steady at all times. The strength deteriorates after some years; around the age of 60-70, the people become very weak. However, the efficiency of scholars is not declined at that age, in general. Their plans and advices are more valuable. Hence, they are respected (as Gods are worshipped). If there is only physical strength to a person, he is considered to have energy (as animals have).
Therefore, everyone must keep his health well, and must have good mind. That is respectable life.

March 31.

Experience has shown that every man is the architect of his own fortune. (Sallust, 50 B.C.).

Why do those who live without praise grieve those who despise them, though they do not grieve themselves? (Thirukkurahl –237).
                      Pugazhpada vaazhaadhaar tham-noavaar thammai
Yigazhvaarai noavadhu yevan? (Thirukkurahl – 237).

It is normally said: “our life is in our hands”. If we have to think how our life should be, we must have some education and experience. While studying in school, we discuss with others about choosing a suitable course. The elders will give a suggestion, if they know, based on the student’s capacity. If we ask a person, who is not aware of it, he may sometimes misguide us. Therefore, we have to consult those who are knowledgeable, in the area of our interest. The advisors can give good suggestions; but, it is the student who has to study to accomplish it. Likewise, the individual has to work and improve his capability to progress in his life. If a person did not progress well, he should not accuse the advisor. If we don’t study well or work efficiently, we cannot lead a respectable life. Therefore, our development or underdevelopment depends on our performance only.

If a surgeon does many complicated surgeries well, he will earn a good name. On the contrary, if a surgeon often makes mistakes, he will get a bad name; no patient will approach him. Getting the name as a good student or bad student depends on one’s education and good character. To gain physical strength, one must know from others the nature of the food (whether good, or harmful), before consuming it. If we don’t put the suggestion into practice, we will not get strength.

Therefore, everyone’s life depends on his/her own aim and practice.

April 1.

Believe one who has proved it. Believe an expert. (Virgil, B.C.).

Let a king ponder well its value, and secure the friendship of men of virtue and of mature knowledge. ((Thirukkurahl – 441).
                    Aran-arindhu mooththa arivudaiyaar kaehnmai
                    Thiran-arindhu thaerndhu kohlal. (Thirukkurahl – 441).

To lead a good life, one must have good education and good character from the beginning itself. What we read and hear will register in our mind to a certain extent. But, what ever one sees will be remembered to a greater extent. Therefore, we should read, hear and see only good things. We have to choose a good pathway for our life. If we associate with great people having good thoughts, we will acquire the same habits. When we go to a textile shop, we want to buy a good cloth or dress. When we want to go out to a hotel for a party, we select the clean place, where the food will be good. When we buy vegetables and fruits, we avoid the rotten pieces; with proper attention, we buy only the good items, which are not damaged or afflicted with any insects, and which will remain good for many days.

Like this, we pay proper attention for doing small things, which will be needed for a short time. However, we don’t give importance for good advices, and the advisors, who give valuable suggestions for our good life. Whoever follows a great and wise person from his early age, will progress in life very well.

Therefore, we should follow a wise person of good character to lead a good life.

April 2.

Life grants nothing to us mortals without hard work. (Horace, 50 B.C.).

Although it be said that, through fate, it cannot be attained, yet labor, with bodily exertion, will yield its reward. (Thirukkurahl – 619).
                   Dheiva(th)thaan aaghaadhu yeninum muyar(ch)chi-than
                   Mei-varuththa(k) kooli tharum. (Thirukkurahl – 619).

There is a common saying: “Labor yields greatness”. Many people have said about the importance of labor (work), in various ways. Labor is necessary for everyone. While studying, one must study and learn for many hours, every day; only then a person can get vast knowledge. If a person reads only the guide book (notes or hints) he cannot understand the subject to the full extent. If he understands the full subject at a particular level, he would find it helpful at a higher level. The sports persons engage themselves in practice for 4-5 hours every day. Because of that training, they are able to participate in the games. When we start learning swimming, all of us struggle to swim; however, after some days of practice, we become good swimmers. It is the same thing for car driving also; we can drive smoothly after some days of practice.

Likewise, the students can get good knowledge by studying daily for 4-5 hours, apart from the school hours. One can get top rank in the class, in the school, in the state, and in the country. If a student wants to get an admission in a top-rank Engineering or Medical college (University), or other world famous Institutes, he/she should get high marks; for this he/she should study regularly. If we don’t work well in a company, we may lose the job. Great people have said: “There is no substitute for hard work”; “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”.

Therefore, we should work with determination with the thought that hard work will always lead to success.

April 3.

Force, without wisdom, falls of its own weight. (Horace, 50 B.C.).

There will be an end to his life who, having climbed out to the end of a branch, ventures to go further. (Thirukkurahl – 476).
                       Nuni(k)-kombhar yaerinaar akthirandhu vookkin
                       Vuyirkk(u)-yirudhi aaghi vidum. (Thirukkurahl -476).

Many of us know about the energy of gravitation of the earth. Based on the gravitation, we are able to stand, and sit on the ground; due to that energy, the objects remain firm without flying in the atmosphere. When it is like that, we can swim in the water, without drowning. The heavy ships float in the water. The submarines move under the water, but without touching the bottom of the sea. The airplanes fly in the sky.

All this were made possible by the findings of the scientists, technologists, and other great people. These changes, though against the natural processes, are the results of the power of the knowledge of the scientists and other wise persons. We should not consider the work as outright against the nature. The scientists’ and technologists’ aim was to utilize nature’s energy in the way we require. The energy can be utilized for good work or bad work. We must utilize our energy to read good books, and do good works. Instead of that, we should not use our energy to destroy good things, or do harmful deeds, and earn bad name too.

We should act as per our knowledge, but not as we like. A strong person will drown in water if he does not know swimming; a person who holds him will also get drowned. But, even a weak person who knows swimming can save a heavy person from drowning. Here ‘swimming’ can be equated to knowledge. Therefore, everyone must develop his knowledge to live happily.

April 4.

Once a word has been allowed to escape, it cannot be recalled. (Horace, 50 B.C.).

Though you guard nothing else, guard your tongue; as for those who do not guard it, their words will be drawn into evil and they will suffer distress. (Thirukkurahl – 127).
              Yaakaavaar aayinum naa-kaakka; kaavaakkaal
              Soagaappar soll-yizhukku(p) pattu. (Thirukkurahl – 127).

Great people will say that ‘time is precious, it should not be wasted’. We should not postpone any work which ought to be done at the right time. While in student days, one should study well. In the growing young age, one must take sufficient food. A weak body can be improved with physical and medical assistance. But, delayed education cannot be adjusted so easily. Education at the correct age will help get a good job at the right age, which will be respected. Education at a later age will not be so effective.

Some jobs, if carried out slowly on one day, can be compensated on the next day. If we lend money, we get it back after some time. But, the words we speak cannot be taken back. If our words are of the nature of praising others, it will make them happy. But, if it is mean and insult, it will affect everyone. If we say some insulting words first, and then express lots of apology, it is not sufficient. We would lose our original respect and dignity, and also lose our happiness.

It is easy but wrong, to adulterate (or, dilute) the milk with water. It is not easy to separate (or, remove) the water from the diluted milk. If poison is mixed in the milk, it is very difficult to remove/destroy the poison from the milk. Even if somebody tells that the poison has been removed completely, nobody will consume the milk. The milk will be thrown out (away from the reach of any living species). The bad words are comparable to the poison.

Therefore, we should always use good and respectable words.

April 5.

Well done is quickly done. (Augustus Caesar, 10 A.D.).

(True) friendship hastens to the rescue of the affected (as readily) as the hand of one whose garment is loosened. (Thirukkurahl – 788).
                      Vudukkai yizhandhavan kai-poala aangae
Yidukkahn kahlaivadhaam natpu. (Thirukkurahl – 788).

We have to do our work within the prescribed time. The school education must be completed within the age of 15-16 years. The college education must be finished within 22-25 years, depending upon the course. If a bus takes about 2 hours to travel 50 KM /mile, it will be acceptable; instead, if it takes 4-5 hours (due to repairs or for any other reason), all the passengers will be unhappy, and feel angry too. They will accuse all those involved - the conductor, the driver, the mechanic, the owner etc. However, those who are standing outside the bus will not bother about the delay or repairs. Likewise, if a student does not do well in his studies, the parents and the teachers who care about the student will worry about him, and try to improve him. Others will not bother to do anything to that student.

In our life, we have to fix time for everything we do, and complete it on time. We have to do the good things soon. We must not do the bad/harmful deeds. It is easy to spoil a good thing. It takes a long time to build a dam, or for the dam to get filled with rain water. There may be several hindrances during that time. To cause damage to it is very easy. Damages can be done quickly. We have to protect ourselves from that.

Therefore, good deeds must be done quickly. Like the hands which hold instantly the dress falling from us, help and good deeds must be done instantaneously.

April 6.

Young men, hear an old man to whom old men hearkened when he was young. (Augustus Caesar, 10 A.D.).

Resemblance of bodies is no resemblance of souls; true resemblance is the resemblance of qualities that attract. (Thirukkurahl – 993).
                     Vuruppu-oththal makkahl-oppu andraal; veruththakka
                     Pahnbu-oththal oppadhaam oppu. (Thirukkurahl – 993).

When we are children, we listen to our parents and follow their advices; in addition, we learn other habits and culture from them. Later, we learn science, engineering and other subjects, and also receive more advices which are useful. Once we enter into a job, we learn more about the job and techniques from the seniors at the job. However, we never use our spare time to learn about the principles for a good life. Many people waste their time in the adult age. They must read good books. They must associate with great personalities, and listen to their wise words. For that, we must be able to identify such great persons. One cannot assume that all the aged people are great persons. We must find out how the present aged persons were, when they were young.

The person who got good education and knowledge at young age, and used it to give valuable advices to others at that time, would have become wiser and great now, due to the additional experience; such a person must be approached now. There is a saying: “we can know the (quality of the) plant from its budding (tender) stage”. The people living in villages will know that, if the tender plants are not healthy, even after transplantation the crops will not be healthy. Hence, let us think that we will be able to identify the up-coming great persons.
Therefore, let us acquire good knowledge in the young age to become great and wise persons at the old age.

April 7.

A good reputation is more valuable than money. (Syrus, 50 B.C.).

If a king incurs the wrath of the righteous great, what will become of his government with its splendid auxiliaries and (all) its untold wealth? (Thirukkurahl – 897).
               Vaghai-maahnda vaazhkkaiyum vaan-poruhlum yennaam
               Thaghai-maahnda thakkaar serin? (Thirukkurahl – 897).

We all will get desires of different kinds, according to the time and place. If the desire is knowledge based, it can be called aim or goal. To achieve this aim, we must work in a good manner. If wealth is obtained through bad practices, it will not give us happiness; it will affect our peace of mind, and may even lead us to inferior level. At young age, our desire will be mostly to increase comforts in our life. If greatness is present in our young age itself, we will involve in developing good characters in us. We will do something of repute. If we are ordinary people, only at the old age we will get the desire to become famous.

Only fame will remain for a long time. Nobody organizes any function to rich people; if done, it would be by their family members only. However, famous people are respected, and praised at all times. Fame will be earned if we do deeds which are beneficial to many people.

Therefore, it is always good to earn fame than wealth.

April 8.

Fortune is like glass – the brighter the glitter the more easily broken. (Syrus 50 B.C.).

There is in this world no excellence equal to freedom from desire; and even in that world, there is nothing like it. (Thirukkurahl – 363).
       Vaendaamai anna vizhu(ch)-selvam yeehnd(u)illai
       Yaahndum akdh(u)-oppadhu yil. (Thirukkurahl – 363).

All of us have the aspirations to earn money/wealth in our life. To earn in a good way is one type; it is a great thought. The next type of earning is by bad means, without worrying about its after-effects; this is not good. A third route is there, which is called ‘fortune’. By this short-cut route, one will expect some windfall, and idle away the time. The thought of getting ‘fortune’ through lottery tickets, and doing only the acts pertinent to that are not good. Believing only on the fortune, nobody should remain idle without doing any work. The wealth that one gets like that will be attractive and glittering; it will vanish soon. The more a glass glitters, the less becomes its strength. Hence it breaks soon.

Therefore, the instant wealth that we receive will not last long. The wealth we earn through our good work will last long, and will be growing.

April 9.

Many receive advice, few profit by it. (Syrus, 50 B.C.).

Though (one’s) enemies may have mastered many good books, it will be impossible for them to become truly loving at heart. (Thirukkurahl – 823).
                Pala-nalla kartra(k) kadaiththum manam-nallar
Aaghudhal maahnaarkku aridhu. (Thirukkurahl – 823).

It is easy for all of us to tell something to others; but, it is rare to follow that. Many advices are given during school years, and when people are young. The reason is that there are many things they must know at the young age. However, only some listen to that and follow them to progress in their life. We see instances wherein people get washed away by flood, while crossing a river; some people discard the warnings given by knowledgeable persons. We notice the road accidents that occur for those who ignore the warnings about curves and bad roads.

Only some people listen to the advice, do well in studies at young age, and reach high positions later in life. There may be only a few percentages of primary class students who complete the college/university education. This means that only a few follow the good advices from the young age, though all the students hear them. This situation must change.

Everyone must listen to the good advices, and follow them in their life to become great. In that situation, all the people will be great to make the country and the world great.

March 16.

Patience is the best remedy for every trouble. (Plautus, 200 B.C.).

Though others inflict injuries on you, yet compassionating the sorrow (that will come upon them) it will be well not to do to them anything contrary to virtue. (Thirukkurahl – 157).
Thiran-alla thar-pirar seiyinum no-nondhu
          Aran-alla seiyaamai nandru. (Thirukkurahl – 157).

There is a saying: “Patience is bigger (greater) than ocean”. If someone causes trouble to us, it is common to react to them with anger, bad words, or bad actions, by ordinary people. If we overcome that moment with patience, we will become dignified. Those who caused trouble to us, or insulted us, will approach us with apology. Some people realize their mistakes in a couple of days. Some people may take a longer time to apologize, due to their false prestige. Once a mistake is committed, it is not going to vanish. Great people will ignore such things done to them, and proceed with their work. If one finds fault with everything, there will be nothing left. So, it is not nice to look for others’ mistakes all the time, and keep referring the mistakes often. However, those who make the mistakes should realize their fault and correct themselves. If they don’t correct themselves, it is bad only for them.

So, one should not hurt anybody. If it is done by mistake, one should apologize and correct it soon. The mistake, which occurs at the work due to inexperience, is a different kind. If a student makes a mistake while reading a passage, it will be corrected by the teacher; this kind of mistake does not require apology.

The words and actions which wound others’ feelings are great mistakes. Nobody should behave like that. If it is done, one should be calm and patient towards such people, who commit such harm.

March 17.

Let not the fruit of action be thy motive, nor be thy attachment to inaction. (Bhagavad Gita).

He who destroys the pride which says “I”, “mine”, will enter a world which is even above the gods. (Thirukkurahl – 346).
                  Yaan-yenadhu yennum serukku-aruppaan vaanoarkku
Vuyarndha vulagham pughum. (Thirukkurahl – 346).

We always want to receive, or know, whether we will get suitable reward for what we do. This is human nature. There are so many jobs/works in the world, which are done with expectations. The payment/salary which one gets for doing a work is not to be taken as an example. To expect an award for doing a work is wrong. If we don’t get the appreciation, (or reward), we will feel bad; we will hesitate to do such work. This attitude is wrong. Parent helps the children grow. Teachers teach their students with great enthusiasm. Many persons do social service to the benefit of the people. Like this, many people do a lot of work. It is not possible for everyone to recognize this. In the same manner, good work must be performed without expecting any return or reward.

For every action, there is a suitable reward/reaction. No energy is wasted. The energy gets changed. We are able to recognize some changes. Sometimes, we are not able to recognize the changes (conversions/rewards). It does not mean that there is no reaction (reward, benefit). We generate electricity through hydroelectric power generators by making use of the water falls. We are not able to see the electricity. But, no one refutes the generation of electricity. We all know the usage of x-ray, which shows us the bones and other inner parts of our body; but, none of us could see the x-ray. We need proper film to get the picture (the benefit). Several surgeries are done by the use of laser energy, which is a very powerful light energy source; but, we don’t see the laser light.
Our good deeds will help us in good ways on other occasions. Likewise, bad deeds will result in giving bad effects to us. Therefore, we should do our duty (our good work) without expecting the reward.

March 18.

Better one’s own duty, though imperfect, than another’s duty well performed. (Bhagavad Gita).

An act that has been firmly resolved on, must be as firmly carried out without delay. (Thirukkurahl – 668).
       Kalangaadhu kahnda vinai(k)-kahn thuhlangaadhu
Thookkam kadindhu seyal. (Thirukkurahl – 668).

Every one of us should perform our duty. During young days, we should focus our attention on education and develop our capability. Based on our capability, we should carry out our duty. Based on that, we should be happy on the work, and lead a peaceful life.

At young age, if we don’t do well in studies which build our capability, we lose the chance of obtaining a good job later. This leads to a life of less comfort, which affects our contented life, and ultimately ends in bad thoughts to earn money.

We should study well and build our capability, in spite of what ever difficulties we may encounter. There should be dignity in the work we do. If there is difficulty in our work, we should overcome that with hard work and finish the task nicely. Instead of that, we should not think of doing simple jobs, which others have already done. If every one repeats what the others have done, there will be no development at home, or in a nation. If our elders had lived with the same thought, we will not be enjoying our life with the present comforts, and developments. Before 50 years, the buses and trains were run by coal; people traveled for 30 days by ship between India and USA, instead of the present 20 hour air-travel.

Therefore, everyone must think of doing something new and good, for the development of the society. We should acquire the capability at young age.

March 19.

There is no winess so dreadful, no accuser so terrible as the conscience that dwells in the heart of every man. (Polybius, 200 B.C.).

Let not a man knowingly tell a lie; for after he has told the lie, his mind will burn him (with the memory of his guilt). (Thirukkurahl – 293).
                   Than-nenju arivadhu poiyarkka; poiththapin
                   Than-nenjae thannai(ch) sudum. (Thirukkurahl – 293).

We should not wantonly hurt or do anything bad to others. Sometimes the person, who is responsible for the damage, may go unnoticed. Even then, those who committed the mistake will always remember it, and lose his peace of mind. Young people may not understand this. It is because young people do not plan to hurt others. They don’t cultivate pride in them. If children commit mistakes, it is not intentional. If some bad thing is intentionally done, it is wrong.

If something is stolen from a house, the burglar will remember the incident for a long time. The affected person might forget the incident, after some time, and continue his work with extra care. If a business man cheats others with less weight in the transactions, he will never have a peace of mind. Likewise, if a student copies from others in an examination, it will be hurting him through out his life.

Therefore, everyone must think of their consciousness and restrain from hurting others. It is necessary to practice these good habits from young age. If young people learn good things from teachers and great persons, and follow them, our country will become great. All must cooperate to achieve this.

March 20.

Those who aim at great deeds, must also suffer greatly. (Crassus, 70 B. C.).

Though it should cause increasing sorrow (at the outset), do with firmness the act that yields bliss (in the end). (Thirukkurahl – 669).
         Thunbham vuravu-arinum seigha thuhniv(u)-aartri
Yinbham payakkum vinai. (Thirukkurahl – 669).

Everybody works according to their education, capability, and surroundings, to lead a comfortable life in the world. A suitable payment (sometimes, a reward, honor), is made to them based on their efficiency in their work. Some work will require physical strength. Some work will be educational and knowledge based. The two types of works are like the rail track; it should not be separated. If both merge into one, it is dangerous. Likewise, if everyone wish to do the same type of work, it is impossible for all of us to live in the world.

Everyone must do his work according to his capability. Only if teachers keep themselves abreast of their knowledge, by continuous reading, they can teach the students properly. If the workers in an industry work hard and for more time, they can manufacture the products in large quantities, which will help to reduce the cost of the product. If new technology is used in farming, and farmers put in more efforts, the people can live without any deficiency of food. No work can be left out as difficult. We should entrust such work to suitable persons. Doctors may have to do long hours of surgery to save a patient. The head of a country, like president or prime minister, will normally work for 15-20 hours a day. Based on the hard work of scientists (who worked day and night), our medical accomplishments have greatly improved. Based on the hard work of various people, our living standards have improved.

To accomplish great things, we have to work with determination, without yielding to impediments.

March 21.

Draw from others the lesson that may profit yourself. (Terrence, 150 B.C.).

So to act as to make those men, his own, who are greater than himself, is of all power the highest. (Thirukkurahl – 444).
      Thammir(p) periyaar thamaraa ozhugudhal
Vanmyuhl yellaam thalai. (Thirukkurahl –  444).

All of us wish to live happily. If we earn in good manner, we can live happily. If we acquire wealth in a wrong method, we may live with all comforts, but not with peace of mind. We have to think of a good life, and adjust ourselves. Will any of us use a damaged bridge to cross a flooding river, after hearing the washing away of another vehicle, sometime earlier? We will not do it certainly. If some place is affected by an epidemic, we will avoid our travel to that place. If some school did not produce even a single successful student, nobody will like to join in that school. If all the students in a college get placements in leading companies, everyone would like to join that college. Therefore, we have to look at others and the changes they have undergone, towards a good life. We should keep that in mind to progress in our life, with necessary precautions based on others’ experiences.

We should not think of starting to do everything from the beginning. People have built and developed the computers. If everyone thinks to do the same thing from the beginning, we cannot achieve further development. We have to understand the past and the existing situation, and then plan for further improvement.

There is a saying: “Failure is the stepping stone for success”. We need not experience and go through the same failure to achieve success. We have to find out the reason for the failure of others, and overcome that obstacle to be successful. If we do that, others’ experience will be helpful to us.

March 22.

There is nothing so easy but that it becomes difficult when you do it reluctantly. (Terrence, 150 B.C.).

Firmness in action is (simply) one’s firmness of mind; all other abilities are not of this nature. (Thirukkurahl – 661).
                      Vinai(th)-thitpam yenbadhu oruvan mana(th)-thitpam
Martaiya yellaam pira. (Thirukkurahl – 661).

The work we do will be hard for some people and simple for some other people. The reason for that is their preparedness for such work and their qualifications. When children are requested to buy something from a store, they will complain of tiredness and avoid that work. However, if they are to go for playing some games, they will readily do that. This is natural for children. Everyone will complete a work, however hard it may be, if they like it. Sportsmen practice their game of choice for hours, every day. We see the business men sitting at the shop for several hours daily, from morning to night. The reason is that the business men are interested in the sales and the profit. If they are asked to sit for an hour or so at some other place, they will not accept it.

Therefore, we can be happy when we choose the job of our interest, based on the aim, education, and experience. We should happily involve ourselves in the work without any tension. Due to tension, our energy is wasted. We can attend to the work with full concentration, only if we are happy. Good and proper breathing help us gain energy, by the oxygen intake and circulation in the body.

Hence, we should do our work with enthusiasm and happiness. If we do anything with aversion, it will appear as hard and difficult.

March 23.

If a man aspires to the highest place, it is no dishonor to him at the second, or even at the third. (Cicero, 100 B.C.).

In all that a king thinks of, let him think of his greatness; and if it should be thrust from him (by fate), it will have the nature of not being thrust from him. (Thirukkurahl – 596).
                    Vuhlluvadhu yellaam vuyar-vuhllal; martradhu
Thahllinum thahllaamai neerththu. (Thirukkurahl – 596).

We all think of studying to a high level, getting a good job, and obtaining high honors in life. It is correct to think like that; one should take suitable steps to achieve it. If a dam is to be built, it should be of suitable height and must hold good amount of water. While studying, the students should think of obtaining higher degrees, and study well from the beginning. They should get more marks and high grades in each examination. If one gets low marks, it will not be possible to go to the next higher class or grade, or a prestigious college/University. Everyone must think of getting high marks and especially first rank. Many students can get the same marks and obtain first rank. If one gets a few marks less, he may get the second or third rank. One should not think that it is not possible, and remain idle without taking any effort from the beginning. It is wrong if one complains that somebody else got the first rank; it is equally wrong to think that no other person should get the first rank.

In sports, only if a person attains the top place at the school level, he can get into the team at the district level. Only those who get into the district level teams will have the chance to become state and national level players. In sports, and in academic programs, prizes are given for those who obtain first, second, and third places.

Therefore, we should always think of attaining high levels and take the proper steps at every stage.

March 24.

Give me a young man in whom there is something of the old and an old man with something of the young; guided so, a man may grow old in body, but never in mind. (Cicero, 100 B.C.).

To discern the truth in everything, by whomsoever spoken, this is wisdom. (Thirukkurahl – 423).
          Yepporuhl yaar-yaar-vaai(k) kaetpinum ap-poruhl
          Mei(p)-poruhl kaahnbadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 423).

There are a lot of differences between young age and old age. We all know the physical (external) differences. But, we should know the difference in the inside (internal). In many schools, the academically best student is selected as the school pupil leader. It is because he is more knowledgeable by his proper studies. He thinks steadily unlike other students, and then gets into action. There will be speed at young age. To be wise, one must have good education, thinking capacity and determined thoughts. To acquire this, one must have sufficient age. If the speed of the youth is coupled with wisdom, the person could accomplish great things in life.

The elders could tell valuable suggestions and plans, based on their long experience. But, they will hesitate to execute the work. The reason for that hesitation is that their old age will prevent their hard work and enthusiasm. Hence, if the enthusiasm and will power of the young people are present in them, the elders will prepare good plans, and complete the work.

Therefore, young people require the wisdom of the elders. The elders require the speed of the youth. If all people are like that, the nation will flourish.

March 25.

Men willingly believe what they wish. (Julius Caesar, 100 B.C.).

Gripping avarice is not to be reckoned as one among other faults; (it stands alone-greater than all). (Thirukkurahl – 438).
                   Partruhllam yennum yivaranmai yertruhllum
                   Yehnnap paduvadh(u)-ondru andru. (Thirukkurahl – 438).

When we want to do a job, we should first think about the job, whether it could be done, and how it cold be done. If we want to get some job, many people will give different suggestions. There may be persons who give good suggestions and guidelines, as well as some who deceive us by giving wrong ideas. To achieve our aim, we should approach good people, listen to them, and then proceed in that line. We should not blindly follow as what others say. We should analyze to find out which is good and which is bad.

Many people cheat others by promising to arrange for jobs to them. To achieve our aim, we tend to believe everything we hear from others. This is human nature. We should think based on our knowledge. We should not act according to our feelings (of the mind). We all believe that whatever we think is correct. Instead of that, we should consult the wise persons, and follow their suggestions, which are provided based on their knowledge. We should not think that only our thoughts will be correct. Such thinking is based on our desire only, but not on our knowledge. We will not believe (or follow) others’ suggestions, if they say anything contrary to our wish.

Therefore, if we want to progress in life, we have to think based on our knowledge, but not based on our feelings and desires.

March 1.

Force has no place where there is need of skill. (Herodotus, 450 B.C.).

Will not the tears, shed by a people who cannot endure the oppression which they suffer (from their king) become a file to waste away his wealth? (Thirukkurahl – 555).
Allal-pattu aartraadhu azhudha-kahn neerandrae
Selvaththai(th) thaeikkum padai. (Thirukkurahl – 555).

We come across different kinds of jobs in our life. Some kind of work appears to be directly useful to us. We think of some other work as useless. However, if we look into them deeply, we will realize that everything is necessary for the human life. Therefore, nobody should think of any work as inferior. Each one must work according to the education and capability. Payment is given according to the work.

If a person did not carry out a simple work properly, he/she can be compelled to complete that. But, one has to do a precision work with great care, thinking and patience. If they are compelled, they will not be able to focus their thinking to do the work efficiently. Fear and anger will curtail precision thinking; hence, such people must be given encouragement, instead of punishment. If a work involves mental capability and knowledge, it must be encouraged with great patience.

The students, who go to the school to learn, must be encouraged with due patience. An authoritative pressure will be helpful only for physical work. It is always better to do a work with enthusiasm and pleasure.

March 2.

It is better to be envied than pitied. (Herodotus, 450 B.C.).

Why do those who live without praise grieve those who despise them, though they do not grieve themselves? (Thirukkurahl – 237).
   Pugazhpada vaazhaadhaar tham-noavaar thammai
Yigazhvaarai noavadhu yevan? (Thirukkurahl – 237).

Each one of us should have the thought of leading a good life. This is an aim. Next, one must think of the ways to achieve that goal. If he cannot think of a good method, he should approach a learned good person, and follow the pathway suggested by them. One can consider somebody as the role-model. The aim to become like somebody in life will not be considered as jealous. The word jealous will apply only if we think of the materials possessed by others. It is wrong to think like that. We have to aim and become like others in their stature. If we lead a struggled life without any aim, without any progress, and without peace of mind, others will pity us if they are good. Other ordinary persons will ridicule us.

Therefore, we have to live with good aim. If we do that, others will respect us, instead of pitying on us.

March 3.

Haste in every business brings failures. (Herodotus, 450 B.C.).

Wise men will not, for the sake of profit, undertake works that will consume their principal. (Thirukkurahl – 463).
Aakkam karudhi mudhal-yizhakkum seivinai
Ookkaar arivudai yaar. (Thirukkurahl – 463).

If we have to complete a work, we must first know about the job and then go through all the details of performing the same. If we start a work without knowing the procedure, it will end up in a lot of troubles. The target cannot be reached. Materials and time will be of waste. Even if the procedure is known, one must involve in the work to the required extent, with patience. It should not be rushed.

The vehicles should ply on the road within the speed limit. We all know that accidents occur due to over speed. When on the highways, the speed must be less at curves, than on a straight road; otherwise, accident occurs. In the same way, one should attend all the classes in the school regularly, to be successful, and to gain knowledge. Our breathing habit should be slow and steady. Fast and rapid breathing is dangerous to our health and even to our life. If our blood pressure is very high, it is dangerous to our life.

Therefore, whatever is done, it should be performed appropriately, at the right speed. Haste ends in waste.

March 4.

Great deeds are usually wrought at great risks. (Herodotus, 450 B.C.).

There is nothing too difficult to be accomplished, if a man sets about it carefully, with a thoughtful mind. (Thirukkurahl – 537).
            Ariya-yendru aagaadha yillai-poch chaavaak
            Karuviyaan poartri(ch) seyin. (Thirukkurahl – 537).

We must know the value doing the work before starting to do it; its worthiness and usefulness to others have to be considered. Then the procedure for doing the work must be analyzed. It is easy to do a simple work. It is easy to construct a small building. However, it is difficult to construct a 50-60 floor building. In western countries, there are so many buildings having 50-60 floors, and a few of 100 floors. It is very difficult to build a big hospital (with all the facilities).

England and France have constructed a rail link under the sea. In the United States of America, there are two road bridges, side by side, with a length of 40 KM (24 miles), across a lake. In Kolkatta (in India) and Sanfrancisco (in USA), there are hanging bridges. Like this, there are so many great and rare things in the world. We can’t even imagine how much responsibilities, commitments, planning, difficulties, and risks would have been involved in such great works. Thinking on the difficulties, if people have not performed those works, many countries and the world would not have developed.

Even if there is difficulty and risk, the important works have to be carried out. By following the proper methods and precautions, one can accomplish all great things.

March 5.

In truth, we know nothing, for truth lies in the depth. (Democritus, 400 B.C.).

A clear, undimmed vision (of things) will deliver its possessors from the darkness (of future births), and confer the felicity (of heaven). (Thirukkurahl – 352).
Yiruhl-neenghi inbham payakkum maruhl-neenghi
Maasaru kaatchi avarkku. (Thirukkurahl – 352).

We read news daily, talk so many things, hear many things, and look at a lot of things. All the things do not remain in our mind. But, only a few incidents are retained in our thoughts. It is due to our deep involvement in such things. If we do a bad thing intentionally, it will stay in our mind all the time. We are not able to realize the various mistakes which we do unintentionally. Once we realize that, we will feel sorry for our actions. Our mistakes do not disappear, just because we don’t realize that. We should be honest to our mind. Even if others do not understand it or even notice it, we should be true in our good actions.

The gold will remain the same, what ever different shapes it takes by way of ornaments. The gold is available in different grades of purity, like 24 (100% pure), 22, 18, and14 karats. Gold is never destroyed. Like gold, truth (fact) can never be destroyed. If an object is to remain intact for a long time, it should be strong and not vulnerable to the surroundings. An object gets strength based on the way it is made. From a strong iron, we make steel, which is stronger. We should remember that the same iron, if unprotected, gets rusted by contact with air and water.
Therefore, we must follow good approaches to develop our stature, and live a long life as great persons, with good principles and determination.

March 6.

You cannot conceive the many without the one. (Plato, 400 B.C.).

Because, by the continuance of rain, the world is preserved in existence, it is worthy to be called ambrosia. (Thirukkurahl – 11).
Vaan-nindru vulagam vazhanghi varudhalaal
Thaan-amizhdham yendru-uhnarar(p) paartru. (Thirukkurahl – 11).

There is a beginning for everything. Only if a child is born, it can grow into a man/woman. Only if a seed is planted, it can grow into a tree. Nobody will be able to answer to the question of how the seed came at the first time. Nobody has the power to understand it. Hence, to progress in life, we should try to understand things which are within our human limits, instead of trying to involve ourselves beyond that.

Only if we join a school and start learning, we can develop ourselves through higher studies, to become knowledgeable and great persons, scientists, doctors, engineers etc. Just like in education, one has to steadily grow in the living standards. Even if an industry is planned, it should be in a small level, which can be expanded gradually. Even to construct a big building, foundation is to be laid first. Only by the accumulation of rain drops, flood is obtained. Dry tanks and lakes get filled up gradually, due to steady rain.

We should dream of acquiring good knowledge. We should aim great. We should develop our capability steadily and progress in life to a great extent.

March 7.

We should behave to our friends as we would wish our friends to behave to us. (Aristotle, 350 B.C.).

The love that dwells (merely) in the smiles of the face is not friendship; (but) that which dwells deep in the smiles of the heart is true friendship. (Thirukkurahl – 786).
Mugha-nagha natpadhu natp(u)-andru; nenjaththu
Agha-nagha natpadhu natpu. (Thirukkurahl – 786).

All of us meet so many people in our life. But, we associate only with a few persons. There may be several reasons for that. Most of us will remember the friendship we get during our young age. If the thinking and character are same, such friendship will last long. If one has good habits, while the other has bad habits, their friendship will not be a good one. Sometimes, the friendship of two persons, both of bad characters, will appear to be good; a difference of opinion might erupt between them at any time. Their association cannot be called as friendship. It may be appropriate to use the word friendship, for the togetherness of persons who all have good habits and good thinking. We have to consider our friends as ourselves.

For a good friendship, the thinking of both the persons must be the same. Friends must compete with another, and help one another to progress in life. Friends should help one another in studies; one should help the other at times of difficulties while in job, in the adult age.

What we think that others should do to our wellbeing, we should do that to others. That is the true and good friendship.

March 8.

Education is the best provision for old age. (Aristotle, 350 B.C.).

The learning which a man has acquired in one birth will yield him pleasure during seven births. (Thirukkurahl – 398).
Orumai(k)-kahn than-kartra kalvi oruvarkku
Yezhumaiyum yaemaappu vudaiththu. (Thirukkurahl – 398).

We can say that there is nothing as great as education. Education gives knowledge to the people. It also increases the knowledge. Since the knowledge is steadily increasing, people acquire good characters and lead better life, and also become role models for others to follow. If the knowledge does not improve, people behave as per their feelings, and get involved in bad actions. By education, one can lead a superb life. Education will make us do great contributions; we will be respected by the people. The ‘fame’, which one gets, is the only thing that remains long in the society.

To become famous, we have to do good things whenever an opportunity arises and whenever we have the capability. Over the years, people become old and their physical stamina decreases; but, their knowledge does not decrease. Their knowledge will be increasing based on the habit of continuous reading. Their dignity is never reduced.

Hence, education is the helping companion at old age. The education that one acquires at the young age is of continuous help in life, including at old age.

March 9.

It is possible to fail in many ways, while to succeed is possible only in one way. (Aristotle, 350 B.C.).

After having considered, “this man can accomplish this, by these means,” let (the king) leave with him the discharge of that duty. (Thirukkurahl – 517).
Yidhanai yidhanaal yivan-mudikkum yendr(u)-aaindhu
Adhanai avan-kahn vidal. (Thirukkurahl – 517).

If we look at the students who study in the school, we can find out how they study and behave. Some students’ education will be affected by long illnesses, which ultimately may even lead to discontinuation. Some people stop their studies for not being able to understand the lessons, or due to insufficient academic help. Some students discontinue their studies for want of sufficient financial support to meet the academic expenses, like tuition fees, purchase of books. Like this, there are many reasons based on which the studies of many young students are affected. Such students must try to overcome the difficulties, with the sole aim of completing their studies.

It is common for everyone to experience some difficulty in one way or other, in their life. If a television set is not functioning, there may be several reasons. A qualified technician will be able to locate the fault easily, and make the TV set work. But ordinary people cannot repair it; they may end up in creating more complications, leading to the discard of the unit.

Therefore, we have to avoid the various routes having pitfalls, and choose the correct path to progress in life, with single aim, with guidance from suitable persons.

March 10.

The root of the kingdom is in the state. The root of the state is in the family. The root of the family is in the person of its head. (Mencius, 300 B.C.).

Let a king daily examine the conduct of his servants; if they do not act crookedly, the world will not act crookedly. (Thirukkurahl – 520).
                   Naadorum naaduga mannan; vinai-seivaan
Koadaamai koadaadhu vulagu. (Thirukkurahl – 520).

It is a good thinking, if we want to live in a good nation. The thought of living with all comforts, and the thought of availability of the needed materials to all are good. But, everyone’s aspiration should be based on the education and the work done by them. Those who do farming should think of acquiring the materials needed for that work. A doctor should think of providing the medical facilities to the patients in that place. There will be different needs for a school, and a goldsmith who makes ornaments with gold. So, people should think of the necessary materials for their work as their need.

Everyone should not aspire for everything. Too much of desire will end us in danger. If one wishes to have something, he should work well to achieve it. Nothing will come by itself. We should not expect the country to give it to us. What is a nation? The people and the things around us constitute the nation. If everyone in a family work and earn, the whole family will live happily with all the comforts. Similarly, if all the families do like that, the whole village will be prosperous. If all the villages and towns are like that, the whole nation will become prosperous. Then the nation will be respected by the rest of the world.

Only if all the parts of our body are in proper condition, we will be called healthy. If all the students are good in a school, then the school will be called a good school. Therefore, all of us must have good thoughts, and good habits; we must be sincere and hard working with commitment and happiness.

We learn good habits from our ancestors, elders, and especially the head of the family. Therefore, the head of a family (state, country) should be good.

The great man is he who does not lose his child’s heart. (Mencius, 300 B.C.).

Resemblance of bodies is no resemblance of souls; true resemblance is the resemblance of qualities that attract. (Thirukkurahl – 993).
                    Vuruppu-oththal makkahl-oppu andraal; veruththakka
                     Pahnbu-oththal oppadhaam oppu. (Thirukkurahl – 993).

When we are very young, we listen to our parents and do everything as they say, without any other thought. At the age when we don’t know the good or the bad, we grow without awareness, apart from playing and eating. As we grow further, we are able to recognize the effects of our surroundings; we are cautious of certain things, and keep progressing in certain lines, in spite of some impediments. If we cannot recognize such things, as we grow, we will be called ‘childish’.  Hence, we must learn everything as we grow.

We should not think that we can do all that we learn. The bad things must be recognized and avoided, while the good things must be followed. We see many programs from various channels on television. We wish to see the channel which we like. Instead, if we see all the channels at the same time, it will be a mess, confusing, and our time is wasted. Life is also like that. We have to plan our life as we want, in a good way, based on our capability. If we encounter some hindrances, we should overcome that. If we follow such practice, we can be considered as knowledgeable persons. If we recognize those who are responsible for our hindrances, we have to forgive them and proceed with our plan; this approach will make us great people. Therefore, as we grow, we have to retain the nature of the children who always and immediately forget the harms done to them.

Good nature is always good. Elders must be of good nature, and have the forgiving attitude like the children, and must be kind towards everyone.

March 12.

There is no greater delight than to be conscious of sincerity on self-examination. (Mencius, 300 B.C.).

Whatever is done with a spotless mind is virtue; all else is vain show. (Thirukkurahl – 34).
                   Manaththu(k)-kahn maasilan aadhal anaithth(u)-aran
Aaghula neera pira. (Thirukkurahl – 34).

We all read daily according to our age (and capacity); we work, play, speak, and eat daily. All these actions must be good, useful, and capable of giving happiness to us and others. Sometimes, other persons may supervise our work; sometimes we have to do the work without any external supervision. Even if nobody supervises our work, we should not evade our duty, or do it improperly. If we err from our correct approach, it is equivalent to deceiving ourselves. We have to be true to ourselves to have peace of mind. If we err, our inner feelings will always be hurting us internally.

There are many types of work in which we have to be conscious within us. We should not see others while writing exams; should not take some one’s things without his/her knowledge; should not make spurious mixtures in food, medicine etc.; should not sell lower weight materials than the prescribed one; should not be idling while at work and so on. If the questions are not answered properly in an examination, the valuing teacher will not give marks. The examiner does not see the person who writes the test; only the answers are adjudged. Only those who don’t write the proper answers will lose the marks; the examiner does not lose anything.
Therefore everyone has to be conscious to himself.

March 13.

Health and intellect are the two blessings of life. (Menander, 300 B.C.).

Those who possess wisdom possess everything; those who have not wisdom, whatever they may possess, have nothing. (Thirukkurahl – 430).
                      Arivudaiyaar yellaam vudaiyaar; arivilaar
Yennudaiyar aenum yilar. (Thirukkurahl –  430).

The people in the world, or in any place, are different from one another. Nobody resembles another in a complete way. Sometimes, we hear of the resemblance of two people; sometimes we see like that. It will appear like that in a superficial way. But, by scientific methods, we can find the differences between them. The appearance, the health, and the intellect will be different for all the people. It is possible for us to utilize it properly and develop it more, to some extent. If we have that attitude, and will power to try it, we can become great. Instead of trying like that, we should not waste our life, thinking that we have no such facilities.

To have good intellect and character, one should have good health. Since a patient will be always thinking about his ill health, he does not have time to think of other things. He could not even try to improve his knowledge. Hence, good health is very important. People should keep their surroundings and their food clean, and hygienic. Young children get affected easily by unhygienic conditions.

Hence, children should be brought up in a hygienic condition. If it is followed, we can have a good society with good health and intellect, in the course of time.

March 14.

It is impossible to live pleasurably without living wisely, well, and justly, and impossible to live wisely, well, and justly without living pleasurably. (Epicurus, 300 B.C.).

Even while in this body, joy will never depart from the mind, in which desire, that sorrow of sorrows, has been destroyed. (Thirukkurahl – 369).

                     Yinbham yidaiyaraadhu yeehndum; avaa-yennum
Thunbaththuhl thunbham kedin. (Thirukkurahl – 369).

If we are asked, ‘what we desire’, all of us will say ‘happy life’. If the question is ‘what is required for a happy life’, there will be different answers. All the answers will be ‘various things’. After getting that, they will be happy. The burglars who don’t get caught, and the people who cheat others, for example, may lead a posh and comfortable life; their happiness will be affected by the inner thought of getting caught by the police, at any time. Therefore, the deceivers, the thieves, and others who involve themselves with non-righteous living cannot lead a happy life. Hence to be happy, we have to think good, do well, and be on the righteous path. If we don’t follow this, we cannot live happily.
Unhappy life is the reason for committing mistakes and bad thinking. If a person is happy, his thinking will be good and he will not yield to bad ones. Therefore, one should think about how to be happy. A contented heart is like having gold. We should live the life we now have, with enjoyment. We feel sad since our desires and aspirations are greater than our capacity. Due to that, bad thoughts and bad actions erupt. That is wrong.

Therefore, we should try to think of developing our capability, instead of the thinking to have more comforts. Increased capability will pave way for fulfilling the good desires, for a happy life.

March 15.

Not by age but capacity is wisdom acquired. (Plautus, 200 B.C.).

To discern the truth in everything, by whomsoever spoken, this is wisdom. (Thirukkurahl – 423).

         Yepporuhl yaar-yaar-vaai(k) kaetpinum ap-poruhl
         Mei(p)-poruhl kaahnbadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 423).

All of us aspire for happy life. There are several ways to accomplish it. For everything there must be an aim. The path must be charted out and analyzed to achieve the aim. One must have good education and good characters. One should involve in that in the proper way. Instead, if one wastes his time without study or any work, his age will go on increasing but not the knowledge or wisdom. Whoever develops his education, and good character, he can become a scholar and a wise person. Nobody is considered a scholar and a wise person, based on age alone.

We appreciate the person, among many, who makes a nice figure from a stone, in a short time. We give prize to the person who comes first in a running race. Nobody gives prize for the runner, who arrives last. In the same manner, we recognize the persons who study well in the young age and lead a life with good characters, and consider them as scholars and wise people. If such people attain old age with good characters, we respect them as great persons.
