201. You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough. (William Blake).
The wealth of the man of rectitude will not perish, but will bring happiness to his posterity. (Thirukkurahl – 112).
செப்பம் உடையவன் ஆக்கம் சிதைவின்றி
எச்சத்திற்கு ஏமாப்பு உடைத்து. (திருக்குறள் - 112).
Seppam vudaiyavan aakkam sidhaivindri
Yechaththirkku yaemaappu vudaiththu. (Thirukkurahl – 112).
In life, it is essential to possess appropriate capability and limit for every action. Many people apply their mind improperly since they do not understand the importance of capability. Instead of worrying about not getting a suitable profession, one should work to improve his capability. Everyone should realize that nothing could be obtained without effort. Such effort should be in a proper line. One should not involve in any action which will hurt or destroy others. People do not understand this at young age. One may face the effects of such dangerous activities at later part of the life. This should be viewed as predictions. If we take nutritious food, the body becomes strong. In drug-testing laboratories, some diseases are induced by giving some medicines, to test some drugs for the diseases. If some medicine is taken, fever will be obtained. Some drugs will induce inflammation. Like this, there are drugs which will induce blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, and other disease. That means, what is infused into the body, one would have to experience its after-effect. In the same way, if one does dangerous things, it will come back to him. Certain effects will be felt after some delay. Those who wish to have a steady good life for his family should always do good deeds only.
Therefore, one should follow a good path to earn money. One can fill a vessel only up to its capacity. Likewise, we should aspire for an earning, which is suitable to our capability. If we expect more, we will be tempted to take to wrong routes. Hence, we should have contentment. Due to the stock market downfall all over the world in October 2008, a Tamil person shot dead himself and his five family members in USA. His whole family got destroyed due to his action above his capacity. This illustrates the need for learning social education by all the people. We can have a measure only for the things which we can see through our eyes. We must have desire (aim) to acquire more of things like good character, knowledge, kindness, wisdom and education, which are invisible. Hence, let us realize that such a life is valuable and live like that.

202. I was angry with my friend; I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe; I told it not, my wrath did grow. (William Blake).
Friendship is to be practiced not for the purpose of laughing but for that to being before hand in giving one another sharp rebukes in case of transgression. (Thirukkurahl – 784).
நகுதல் பொருட்டன்று நட்டல்; மிகுதிக்கண்
மேற்சென்று இடித்தற் பொருட்டு. (திருக்குறள் - 784).
Nagudhar(p) poruttandru natal; migudhik-kahn
Maersendru yidiththar(p) poruttu. (Thirukkurahl – 784).
We move with many persons daily. They may be our relatives, friends and foes. Further, they may be elder or younger to us. In addition, they may be in a higher or lower level than us in profession and status. It will be good if we realize this while talking with them.
We should not insult anyone while talking. Praising speech will make them happy. If a student is called as a smart person, he will be happy. Instead, if he is called as a dull person, he will not only feel sad but may also get angry. If one does not know something, it will be better if he is taught that; if it is not possible, one should refrain from making any comment. One cannot show anger or insult towards great and strong persons. If it is done, the one who initiated it will have to bear the loss. If we show it to innocent people, our respect will diminish; if shown to ignorant people it may, sometimes, lead to danger.
The friends’ faults have to be told in private. We should show our displeasure and condemn the mistakes of our friends. They will not only correct themselves, but also appreciate us. We will also feel happy about the good deed done to one. However, it will not be proper, if we venture to correct the immature persons and foes. The Ramayana and Mahabharata have examples for these two types of situations. Therefore, we have to control our speech and anger.

203. Terror in the house does roar, but pity stands before the door. (William Blake).
If (a man’s) relatives remain attached to him with unchanging love, it will be a source of ever-increasing wealth. (Thirukkurahl – 522).
விருப்புஅறாச் சுற்றம் இயையின் அருப்புஅறா
ஆக்கம் பலவும் தரும். (திருக்குறள் - 522).
Virupu-araa(ch) surtram yiyaiyin arupparaa
Aakkam palavum tharum. (Thirukkurahl – 522).
It is an art in our life to associate with others. Some will move with others kindly and sensibly. Some will always be scolding others. The latter category of people will always live without peace of mind. Some persons will move quietly with others but with anger at home. One has to be careful with such persons.
We meet many persons when we go out. There may be persons more educated and knowledgeable than us. Without knowing them, it is not proper to tell them whatever we know. This act will expose our ignorance. We have to talk with restraint in learned gathering. Our old literatures say that it is wrong to give some lead words to great persons, even if they forget. It is different in the home. We have to tell our good opinions to our friends and relatives at home, in a proper way. Instead of that, some will talk at home with harshness, disgust and anger. Such listeners will begin to hate us. This situation will prevail mostly among the people, who are below the poverty line. This will also be seen among those who boast themselves. Those who consider others as ignorant will also behave like that. We can live well, if we know to respect others. It will be a good life, if the relatives and friends understand this. If we can get such relatives and friends, it will be good if we could correct ourselves and live, without leaving them. In the epic Ramayana, everyone was friendly with Rama; however, Ravana was hated by his own brother and son.
Therefore, let us patronize kindness and get peace.
July 22.
204. He, who shall hurt the little wren, shall never be beloved by men. (William Blake).
Even through forgetfulness, meditate not the ruin of another. Virtue will mediate the ruin of him who thus meditates. (Thirukkurahl – 204).
மறந்தும் பிறன்கேடு சூழற்க; சூழின்
அறம்சூழும் சூழ்ந்தவன் கேடு. (திருக்குறள் - 204).
Marandhum piran-kaedu soozharkka; soozhin
Aram-soozhum soozhndhavan kaedu. (Thirukkurahl – 204).
There are two kinds in business. In one, we buy certain things by paying money. The other is exchange of commodities, which was in vogue in the olden days. In this, we give one material which we have, and get another material which we need. But, we have to know how the invisible human character will be useful.
We can not buy character by paying any money or material. If we talk kindly with others, they will also talk kindly with us. If we say something with anger, the reply will also be like that. We cannot express our anger towards our superior officer or a stronger person. If we do that, they will remove us from the job, or think of destroying us. It is not a good humane nature to show our anger towards a weaker person. Such action is similar to an animal killing a weaker animal. Therefore, we should be human being, not only by appearance but also in character. The disease cancer will destroy the person who has it. But, anger will destroy the persons on both sides. It is said that what ever we do will come back to us by ten-fold. If we do good deeds, good things will come to us. Only the nutrition, which is present in the food which we consume, will enter our body. In the same way, our character will change according to our environment.
Therefore, we should always talk kindly with others. No one should be considered as an undignified person. The word ‘mankind’ might have been coined to indicate that we should be kind. Hence, we should remember the words ‘love is god’.
July 23.
205. Great things are done when men and mountains meet; this is not done by jostling in the street. (William Blake).
Do an act after a due consideration of the (following) five: viz. money, means, time, execution and place. (Thirukkurahl – 675).
பொருள்கருவி காலம் வினைஇடனொடு ஐந்தும்
இருள்தீர எண்ணிச் செயல். (திருக்குறள் - 675).
Poruhl-karuvi kaalam vinai-yidanoadu iyndhum
Iruhl-theera yehnni(ch) seyal. (Thirukkurahl – 675).
A person can accomplish a work in a good way, only if he has liking for it. Thinking alone is not enough. One should have the suitable capability and then perform it. One should predict the difficulties in executing the work, and take enough precautions also. One should get enough practice in driving a bus or a vehicle, and get the proper license to drive. One should drive without involving in any accident. Further, one should check the condition of the vehicle. There is a difference between beauty and being in good condition. Beauty involves external appearance. One can make a model of something using wood, metal or wax. If a vehicle is to be useful, all its parts must be in good condition. One should not consider any part of it as superior or inferior. The engine should perform well. The air-pressure in the wheels should be in a correct level. It also needs petrol, diesel or other things as fuel. If all these things are in proper manner, one can say that the vehicle is in good condition. What is the use of keeping a wax-model of the vehicle?
The driver should use a good vehicle properly. If some problems arise, we rectify it. This is natural. In the same way, we should lead our life properly. We should fully involve ourselves in our work and do it with perfection. There is certainly difficulty in a running race. While participating in it, what is the use if one does a leisure walking at that place? What can be done if one thinks it as a hard work to take the food to eat?
Therefore, one needs knowledge and capability to perform a work. To accomplish it, one needs physical strength and determination. If these two are not together, it is like a lame person who desires to get the honey from a tree. Hence, one should always remember the saying ‘act with proper thinking’.
July 24
206. He who would do good to another must do it in minute particulars. General good is the plea of the hypocrite and flatterer. (William Blake).
As much as possible, in every way, incessantly practice virtue. (Thirukkurahl – 33).
ஒல்லும் வகையான் அறவினை ஓவாதே
செல்லும்வாய் எல்லாம் செயல். (திருக்குறள் - 33).
Vollum vagaiyaan ara-vinai voavadhae
Sellumvaai yellaam seyal. (Thirukkurahl – 33).
Every person should live a complete life. Complete life does not refer age alone. It depends on the way of living also. One should work according to their capability, and live a contented life with the income from their work. If the desire increases, one will be tempted to earn the money through bad ways. In this attempt, some people cause misery to others, and they themselves end up in trouble.
There are kind-hearted people among us who like to help such persons who lead a difficult life. They help others in their own possible ways. Such common help, sometimes, do not reach the proper people. The reason is that the philanthropist and the beneficiary are at two different places. Some people take away those gift materials, before it reaches the proper place and people. In some places, 85% of the donated money is lost as expenditure. If it is in kind, sometimes, the mediators divert the materials for personal gains. This action is very much wrong. To snatch the food when someone is eating it is a very bad action. A prince was found guilty for an inadvertent death of a calf by the back wheel of a chariot, which was driven by him; the king ordered for the death of the prince in the same way as the calf. However, the king lamented later for the miserable situation by the thought that whether he would have confiscated the food while someone was eating it. This type of thoughts prevailed in the poets’ mind in those days.
Therefore, one should not prevent the help meant for others. The philanthropists should make sure that the help reaches the genuine beneficiary. Hence, whatever is done, it should be done properly. If it is not done like that, our action will only mean a superficial one to bring fame to us.
July 25.
207. Man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn. (Robert Burns).
He who, to the disgust of many, speaks useless things will be despised by all. (Thirukkurahl – 191).
பல்லார் முனியப் பயனில சொல்லுவான்
எல்லாரும் எள்ளப் படும். (திருக்குறள் - 191).
Pa(l)laar munia(p) payanila solluvaan
Yellaarum yehlla(p) padum. (Thirukkurahl – 191).
It is good to have the thought of progress in life and leading a good life in everyone’s mind. We have to concentrate our attention in putting such thoughts in action. Our progress must be without spoiling others. It is not correct to live with the earning by selling products which destroy others’ lives. Some animals kill others and eat to satisfy their hunger and live. Can we, having the sixth sense, do like that? It is also wrong to steal from others’ and live with that. It is equally wrong to help others in doing bad activities. Cheating, burglary and destruction are all bad activities. Selling and helping the sales of products which will affect the mental and physical state of others are also wrong activities. The Thirukkurahl says that it is wrong to steal to provide food for one’s own mother. When it is like that, one should think how bad it is to involve in activities which are worse than stealing.
The reason for all these bad activities is the limitless desire in our mind. Many books from various countries list the good and bad activities. But, the number of people who read them is small. Many persons who read them forget it after the examination. Some of the educated persons, who utilize the less-educated ones for bad activities, should stop it.
Therefore, people should not spoil others’ life. They should not do bad things, even if they are not able to do good things. Great people know that whatever we do will come back to us ten-fold. We should remember that our good deeds will yield good things, and bad deeds will yield bad things to us by many-fold. If this thought prevails in young minds, the country will progress. Therefore, let us do only good deeds.
July 26.
208. The social, friendly, honest man, whatever he be, it is he fulfills great Nature’s plan, and none but he. (Robert Burns).
He who desires not pleasure, but desires labor, will be a pillar to sustain his relations, wiping away their sorrows. (Thirukkurahl – 615).
இன்பம் விழையான் வினைவிழைவான் தன்கேளிர்
துன்பம் துடைத்துஊன்றும் தூண். (திருக்குறள் - 615).
Yinbam vizaiyaan vinai-vizaivaan th(a)n-kaehlir
Thunbam thudaith(u)-oondrum thoohn. (Thirukkurahl – 615).
The person, who thinks that all people are human like him, is a great person. Everyone should act under self-control with this thought. We should not think of committing a wrong thing, if no one sees us. We should not think of violating traffic rules, when the police do not watch us. One can say that such traffic violations are almost absent in developed countries. The violators should change their attitude. Those who instigate such wrong actions also should change. It must be the duty of businessmen to make and sell unadulterated products. One should not sell substandard materials by deceiving ignorant people. When scarcity of materials prevails, selling things at higher price is equal to cheating. In our country, where ancient philosophical principles are preached, the cheating has increased now. As told in Thirukkurahl, we study great things; but, we forget it after learning; we don’t live accordingly. There should be truth in our speech and action. The builders should construct standard buildings. The maintenance of bus and other vehicles should be performed correctly. Since it is not done well accidents happen. Due to the negligence of drivers during night time many accidents occur. Since the young persons drive with their youth power and ignore the traffic rules, their fate is blamed.
Therefore, we should live with honesty. The persons, who understand others and help them with kindness, will always be respected. It is said that rain will be prevalent where there are such good persons. When there is sufficient rain the prosperity will increase. Truth will always win. Therefore, let us live honestly.
July 27.
209. Pain is short and joy is eternal. (Johann von Schiller).
If a man thoroughly cuts off all desire, the deeds, which confer immortality, will come to him, in the path in which he seeks them. (Thirukkurahl – 367).
அவாவினை ஆற்ற அறுப்பின் தவாவினை
தான்வேண்டும் ஆற்றான் வரும். (திருக்குறள் - 367).
Avaavinai aartra aruppin thavaa-vinai
Thaan-vaehndum aartraan varum. (Thirukkurahl – 367).
Whatever we need, we have to work suitably to achieve it. When we study in school, we have to read according to the level of the class. The duration of our study-time in high school should be higher than that of primary classes; we have study more at the college level. Only those who do like that will be able to achieve heights in their life. Do we eat the same quantity of food at adult age as we did at the child stage? In the same manner, our dress sizes change. If that is so, will it be correct if our knowledge does not increase? Therefore, we have to study for long hours to increase our knowledge.
The attitude of working people should also change. One must take up high positions in jobs, and work with great responsibility. There is no limit for the working hours of district collectors, ministers, company executives, college principals and the heads of big organizations. They achieve things according to their efforts. The amount of effort put in by doctors during great surgeries cannot be comprehended. The scientists accomplish great findings due to their efforts in research laboratories. People will face great hardships during their work. But, after completing the work, the pleasure they get has no limit. In addition to them, many people get benefits from that work. Due to surgery, a family gets pleasure. Due to the findings in science, medicine and technology, the whole society is benefitted.
Hence, one should complete the work, without getting scared on the difficulties encountered during that time. The result of that work will benefit everyone at all times. Therefore, we should involve in good activities without getting dejected due to the difficulties.
July 28.
210. Think of your fore-fathers! Think of your posterity. (John Quency Adams).
This world possesses the greatness of one who yesterday was and today is not. (Thirukkurahl – 336).
நெருநல் உளனொருவன் இன்றில்லை என்னும்
பெருமை உடைத்துஇவ் வுலகு. (திருக்குறள் - 336).
Neru-nal vuhlan-voruvan yindrillai yennum
Perumai vudai(th)th(u)-yiv vulagu. (Thirukkurahl – 336).
We all think to lead a good life. Some people easily achieve that aim. The important reason for that is that their parents are comfortably situated. Some people listen to the advices of good persons from the young years and act accordingly to lead a good life. Others start their life without knowing any thing.
Those who start their life without the help of others, never analyze about which will be good or bad. They choose whichever is easy to obtain. It will be fine if it happens to be good. But, if it is a wrong route, it affects them and their children. If a person takes to theft, his children will be referred by the society as thief’s children, and his parents as thief’s parents. There are activities like this in the world, which are condemned by wise persons. How to know which is a bad action? If we read the news, we can know that. If a person is wanted by the police for his action, or accused by the court, such actions are not good. If one’s own children are prevented from doing some activity, that action is bad. Therefore, our life does not end with us. It continues after us. Many persons look into the wealth which we save. It is not enough if one is rich. It should be earned by good ways. The poor people should not think that they could do any wrong activity.
Therefore, everyone should consider their forthcoming generations. Those who attend to their families correctly, will consider others’ welfare and the nation’s welfare, and act accordingly. They will work without selfishness but with national interest. Let us live with the thought that the world is for everyone.
July 29.
211. That best portion of a good man’s life: his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love. (William Wordsworth).
The great will always humble himself; but the mean will exalt himself in self-admiration. (Thirukkurahl – 978).
பணியுமாம் என்றும் பெருமை; சிறுமை
அணியுமாம் தன்னை வியந்து. (திருக்குறள் - 978).
Pahniyumaam yendrum perumai; sirumai
Ahniyumaam thannai viyandhu. (Thirukkurahl – 978).
The people can be divided into three groups as great, ordinary and mean persons. The great people will think about the welfare of others. They will achieve their aim in their own ways. In the olden days, such persons infused good principles to the public and the kings, by being poets and working as ministers to the kings. These poets acclaimed respects wherever they went. The kings got pride by honoring the poets.
The mean people are those who hurt others for their living. They indulge in dangerous activities. They do such activities which are condemned by the world, by their greed on worldly objects, women, and gold (money). The first category involves the purchase of lands and houses, though useful for others, by someone through wrong means. The second category destroys the normal family life prevailing in the world. The third type increases theft; adulteration of commodities in business, and selling things at higher prices occur. The people who do these things will never be able to live with peace.
The ordinary people will always lead a life within their earnings. If such persons are helped, their living standard will improve further. It will require a great effort to correct the mean persons. Only after improving these two categories of people, a nation should be considered as a developed one. A nation cannot become great, if the people are of bad character, though they may be rich.
Therefore, a nation should have more people having good character. Those who help others with this thought in their own ways, without pampering, are very great persons. Their action is an example for the proverb which means ‘little drops make floods’. Let us also be a part of them.
July 30.
212. Minds that have nothing to confer, find little to perceive. (William Wordsworth).
One who would teach a fool will (simply) betray his folly; and the fool would (still) think himself wise in his own conceit. (Thirukkurahl – 849).
காணாதான் காட்டுவான் தான்காணான் காணாதான்
கண்டானாம் தான்கண்ட வாறு. (திருக்குறள் - 849).
Kaahnaadhaan kaattuvaan than-kaahnaan; kaahnaadhaan
Kahndaanaam than-kahnda vaaru. (Thirukkurahl – 849).
The great thinkers are essential for the development of a nation. They can be divided into two groups. One group develops the good character of the people. The world mostly knows only such persons. Their opinions are known to the nation and world through their speeches and writings. Whatever amount of food may be available in the house one should have proper health to eat it. In the same way peace, affection and development will prevail in the house only if all the members of the house have proper mindset. No argument will occur in the house. We notice the occurrence of arguments between parents and children, and brothers. Such incidents invariably occur only in developing nations. The poverty is the reason for this. It is not proper to succumb due to poverty, in a country where advices are in abundance. Based on the saying ‘hunger will drive away all the ten good principles’, the good thinking vanishes if a person is hungry. What we have to learn from this is that those who work for the alleviation of hunger and poverty should also be acclaimed and respected as the philosophers.
The other group of thinkers is those who work for the economic growth of the country. Without the efforts of these persons, we will be at the bottom of the world list. We have to progress in many areas like education, agriculture, science, industry, and sports. Such thinkers will discuss their opinions with others. By this procedure, the possible mistakes are corrected. The thoughts will also get wasted if not discussed, just like the wastage of unshared food and prosperity. If the good principles are not shared with others, it will be a waste like fruits becoming rotten.
Therefore, we should become great thinkers. Let us spread it and be proud of it.
July 31.
213. Never give way to melancholy; resist it steadily, for the habit will encroach. (Sydney Smith).
There is no sorrow to those who are without desire; but, where that is, sorrow will incessantly come, more and more. (Thirukkurahl – 368).
அவாஇல்லார்க்கு இல்லாகும் துன்பம்; அஃதுஉண்டேல்
தவாஅது மேன்மேல் வரும். (திருக்குறள் - 368).
Avaa-yillaarkku yillaagum thunbham; agdh-uhndael
Thavaa-adhu maen-mael varum. (Thirukkurahl – 368).
A good way to improve our performance is to do it repeatedly. We have to remember the proverb ‘art work improves by practice’. In the course of time, our work will become a routine one. During studies, if we read a poem often, we will be able to remember it. Thus, whatever we do, it will become a habit.
If we keep talking in a cordial way, our character will become good even without our awareness. If we often talk with anger, we will get anger for everything. If one has to be called a philanthropist, he must first start helping others. Likewise, if a person starts hurting others, the bad action will become a common feature for him. Then they will be termed as bad persons. The one who plays tennis daily is called a tennis player. The one who plays chess is called a chess player. Hence, we will become immersed in the action which we often do. Such thought will not vanish from us. Therefore, our actions should always be good. As far as possible, we should help others. Medical reports say that good health and disease-free life will prevail if one lives with happiness. Smile strengthens the facial nerves.
Therefore, we should not get disgusted over simple misfortunes. The reason for the misery should be found and eliminated. If we get toothache, we rectify it through a dentist. For heart problems, we take appropriate medicines. If we get a wound in our body, we don’t try to conceal it; we try to heal it. Hence, we should realize that we have to think of removing the misery instead of worrying on it. Hence, let us live happily.
August 1.
214. Veracity does not consist in saying but in the intention of communicating truth. (Samuel Coleridge).
He, who in his conduct preserves a mind free from deceit, will dwell in the minds of all men. (Thirukkurahl – 294).
உள்ளத்தால் பொய்யாது ஒழுகின் உலகத்தார்
உள்ளத்துள் எல்லாம் உளன். (திருக்குறள் - 294).
Vuhla(th)thaal poi-yaadhu ozhughin vulaga(th)thaar
Vuhlla(th)thuhl yellaam vuhlan. (Thirukkurahl – 294).
Whatever work we do, it should be done honestly. It is commonly commented as whether we talk the truth or not. We have to read true to our consciousness. It means that we should focus our attention on the lessons when we read. No other thinking should be there during studies. We have to read aloud in the young years. Only then our full attention will be in the studies. Further, those who know better will be able to hear us and correct our pronunciations.
We should put in honest efforts in our work. Time should not be wasted. We get anxiety and worry, and become impatient, when the bus or train is delayed. If that is so, is it not wrong if we don’t do a good job? If a mechanic does not attend to a vehicle properly, the vehicle involves in an accident. If the teachers do not teach properly, the knowledge of the students decline. If the engineers and builders make mistakes, the building collapses. If there is no truth in the family, it deteriorates. Many examples can be given like this. The greatness of truth should be inculcated in the minds of the people. Many people are pushed into doing wrong deeds, without awareness. Everyone should acquire educational knowledge to avoid and prevent such wrong deeds. We should also listen to good persons to lead a good life.
Therefore, living with truth will always yield greatness. Let us cherish truth.
August 2.
215. Experience is the only prophecy of wise men. (Alphonse de Lamartine).
Although it be said that, through fate, it cannot be obtained, yet labor, with bodily exertion, will yield its reward. (Thirukkurahl – 619).
தெய்வத்தான் ஆகாது எனினும் முயற்சிதன்
மெய்வருந்தக் கூலி தரும். (திருக்குறள் - 619).
Dheiva(th)thaan aagaadhu yeninum muyarchi-dhan
Mei-varundha(k) kooli tharum. (Thirukkurahl – 619).
There are several ways to know about something. They are methods like listening, reading, looking, and experiencing. There are different kinds in each method. Certain things cannot be experienced by all the people; only a few can experience it. We cannot experience the space travel. It will be sufficient to know about it by hearing from those who travelled in space. But, there are opportunities for us to experience many other things, depending upon our capabilities. However, it is wrong to think of experiencing everything. We should involve with the necessary thing for our life and acquire proper training for it.
In general, one should choose one of the common activities and acquire proper training. With high education and training, we can become great scientists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, industrialists, collectors, and other things. Our professional level will diminish according to our decrease in the educational level. It is difficult to give a proper explanation for a situation wherein some persons occupy high positions even though the opportunities are equal. One should find out why many people do not follow it, even though they are aware that one should work truly to become great. The philosophy gives an answer for this question. The one who did not reach a high level might have done some wrong deeds unaware. Those who believe in previous births console themselves by the thinking that it is the result of their previous wrong deeds, which is considered as fate. Those who don’t believe in this should look at it in a different way. People won’t do bad deeds if the thought that ‘bad deeds will yield only bad things’ prevails. Nobody will ever think of becoming bad. This thought will perpetuate the increase of good things and decrease of bad things in the world.
Therefore, let us think of development for all with good thoughts.
August 3.
216. The great law of culture is: Let each become all that he was created capable of being. (Thomas Carlyle).
True knowledge consists in the removal of ignorance, which is (the cause of) births, and the perception of the True Being who is the bestower of heaven. (Thirukkurahl – 358).
பிறப்பென்னும் பேதமை நீங்கச் சிறப்பென்னும்
செம்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு. (திருக்குறள் - 358).
Pirap(u)-yennum paedhamai neengha(ch) sirappennum
Sem-poruhl kaahnbadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 358).
Every human being will have a desire. Only a great desire on materials and the wish to acquire it are wrong. The thoughts of progress in life, and wish to get good education and good job are considered as motivation. We should not get dejected if we don’t get the expected thing after our efforts. We should do the work which is possible by us.
We should look at the job and the person separately, whoever does it. A person’s greatness depends on his character. Many people do not perceive this point. The first step is not to denigrate a person based on his job. Others should be given an opportunity to work on the job which is suitable to their capability. Nobody should be compelled. The opinions of young ignorant persons should not be taken as correct. In general, the persons who do wrong actions should be controlled. If it is not controlled, the bad things will increase in the world. A single bad action will destroy a good life which has been built gradually over the years. In life, no compulsion is imposed, in general, to do a good action. There are many ways wherein bad deeds are performed by compulsion. Bad persons accomplish their aim by utilizing the poverty of poor people, and luring and offering money for them. Some rich people also indulge in dangerous activities due to desire for more money. Everyone should lead a good life without succumbing to desire and fear.
Therefore, it is good to live with good character and help others also to live like that. Let all of us live with human outlook.

217. Nothing that was worthy in the past departs; no truth or goodness realized by man ever dies, can die. (Thomas Carlyle).
There is nothing that stands forth in the world imperishable, except fame, exalted in solitary greatness. (Thirukkurahl – 233).
ஒன்றா உலகத்து உயர்ந்த புகழல்லால்
பொன்றாது நிற்பதுஒன்று இல். (திருக்குறள் -233).
Vondraa vulaga(th)thu vuyarndha pugazh-al-laal
Pondraadhu nirpadh(u)-ondru yil. (Thirukkurahl – 233).
In the world some persons appear unique. Many are born. Birth and death of people are natural. We keep growing in the childhood without any understanding. At the student level, we learn things according to our suitability. After the studies, we work in some jobs for about 30-35 years. If we shine in the job and reach high positions, we will feel happy. When we are happy, we may like to involve in some social activities. If a person is unhappy at the job, or at home, he will always be thinking only about it.
If a person is always engaged only in his job, nobody will know about his nature. They will be a part of the general people who are born, live and die. The world will appreciate those who do more than others. Some findings of scientists are useful to the world. Such great persons remain in the world records. The names of others who do things in an ordinary way vanish in a short time. Many stories and articles appear daily. But, only a few stand the test of time. Ramayanam, Mahabharatham, Silappathigaram, Gitanjali and other similar creations are examples for this. Even though many kings lived earlier, the name of Pari vahllal (in Tamil Nadu, India) is remembered for his gesture of offering his chariot for a creep to spread. The actions of other kings have given us The Big Temple at Thanjavoor, Meenakshi Temple at Madurai, and Taj Mahal.
Therefore, the life should be lived happily. One should live with greatness. Only then we can accomplish great things. Good deeds will remain long. A clay house is damaged soon. Small pebbles are washed away in floods. Proper buildings and big dams remain for long years. The great actions of persons will remain for ever. Hence, let us not forget that the education and character must be good, which are the foundations.

218. All work is as seed sown; it grows and spreads, and sows itself anew. (Thomas Carlyle).
Is it necessary to sow seed in the field of the man who, having feasted his guests, eats what may remain? (Thirukkurahl – 85).
வித்தும் இடல்வேண்டும் கொல்லோ விருந்துஓம்பி
மிச்சில் மிசைவான் புலம்? (திருக்குறள் - 85).
Vi(th)thum yidal-vaehndum kolloa? Virundhoambi
Mich-chil misaivaan pulam. (Thirukkurahl – 85).
There are many living things in the world. These living things have the nature of formation, growth and destruction. They are termed as plants and trees, animals which are of crawling, flying and walking nature, and human beings. The plant varieties propagate their species by the fall of the seeds in forests and villages. Their growth and destruction depend on the natural environment. Some plants are destroyed soon due to their utility as food for animals like sheep, deer, cattle and elephant. If the same plants are grown at home gardens with proper care, they will grow well and be useful. They will be useful for others as long as they exist.
With the above views, plants and trees are planted at road sides and other places, in the past and present. By growing trees such as tamarind, neem, banyan, mango, and jack fruit on the road sides, they become useful to people as food, medicine, and furniture materials. If they are grown with a control, their utility increases. They are also protected from nature’s fury. In the same way, if there is no discipline in birth and living conditions, the people will be like the trees in the forest. If we grow without discipline and aim, others will utilize us for their needs; it may increase the chances of our destruction.
Therefore, we should plan our life properly. If we do not care for it and live indiscriminately, there will be no difference between us and the trees and plants. Hence, let us live with good awareness.
August 6.
219. The history of the world is but the biography of great men. (Thomas Carlyle).
(The king’s) choice should fix him, who is of good family, who is free from faults, and who has the modesty which fears the wounds (of sin). (Thirukkurahl – 502).
குடிப்பிறந்து குற்றத்தின் நீங்கி வடுப்பரியும்
நாணுடையான் கட்டே தெளிவு.
Kudip-pirandhu kurtra(th)thin neenghi vadupp(u)-ariyum
Naahn-udaiyaan kattae thehlivu. (Thirukkurahl – 502).
The books are very important for our educational knowledge. In the olden days, inscriptions on stones and palm leaf were in use. They were useful for the poets to spread the knowledge to the people; they were also useful in later years, some of which are being preserved even now. From the poets, we learn about great kings, their valuable performances, and other great events of the past. Nobody writes about ordinary people of the past, in general. For example, we do not try to safeguard any ordinary thing in the house; but, we preserve valuable materials like jewels, money and documents in a safe place. The valuable things have to be preserved.
Hard materials will last long. Gold is a highly dense material. It does not deteriorate over time. It is not damaged by the environment. Hence gold is highly valued. Even though there are some other materials which are valuable, they do not command such an opinion among the people. The reason for that is that they should be easily available to the public. Therefore, the world never forgets those who do good things to them and live with them. Every country is proud of its great persons. Such great persons are there in each discipline. There are opportunities to achieve great things in areas like science, industry, medicine, arts and literature. If we make use of it, we can also get a place in history. There are several opportunities in education and sports. One should not set aside the aim thinking that only one person could succeed.
Therefore, one should first build a strong foundation for a good life. With that aim, one should live as a good human being. If our dress has a small torn, its value becomes lost. In the same way, one should live without any blemish in life by avoiding bad deeds.
August 7.
220. The soul of man is larger than the sky, deeper than ocean, or the abysmal dark of the unfathomed centre. (Heartly Coleridge).
Heaven is nearer than earth to those men of purified minds who are freed from doubt. (Thirukkurahl – 353).
ஐயத்தின் நீங்கித் தெளிந்தார்க்கு வையத்தின்
வானம் நணியது உடைத்து. (திருக்குறள் - 353).
Aiya(th)thin neenghi thehlindhaarkku vaiya(th)thin
Vaanam nahniyadhu vudai(th)thu. (Thirukkurahl – 353).
If we need to know about some objects in the world, we have to learn about all the details. There will be variation between different objects. There are several ways to measure the external appearance. All of us know about the weight and height of the people. Now, we have electronic methods to determine the strength of the bones. By the present research techniques, one can know about the nature of the blood and its contents. One can also find out the presence of invisible cancer, which may be present inside our body. A highly powerful light beam, called laser, has been invented which is utilized to do several surgeries without loss of blood.
Even though there is such advancement in science, there is no method yet to know the mind of people precisely. It is doubtful whether even thinking in that line is feasible. We all think of the objects at different places in the world, even while sitting at one place. But, even the person sitting next to us will not know what we are thinking about. It will be fine if our thinking is good. But, it is wrong to think of hurting others. If bad ideas emanate, one will tend to put it in action. Some of our dangerous thoughts will create misery in us. The glands in our body are activated to produce some fluids based on our mood, which affect our health. Hence, it is always good to think of good things.
Therefore, our inner mind should be kept pure. Our consciousness will hurt us even after several years. Our elders have said this in different ways. Nobody will be able to contradict this. Hence, one should realize this and think of leading a good life.
August 8.
221. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. (Thomas Bayly).
I still live by longing for the arrival of him who has gone out of love for victory and with valor as his guide. (Thirukkurahl – 1263).
உரன்நசைஇ உள்ளம் துணையாகச் சென்றார்
வரல்நசைஇ இன்னும் உளேன். (திருக்குறள் - 1263).
Vuran-nasai-ye vuhllam thuhnai-yaaga sendraar
Varal-nasai-ye yinnum vuhlaen. (Thirukkurahl – 1263).
The depth of our relationship or friendship with others will vary according to time. Little babies will cry if they are away from their mothers. The mother will also not go out leaving the child. But, when the child grows, the duration of separation from the parents will increase. The power to withstand the separation will strengthen over the years. Friendship will start at the young age and grow steadily. It will appear to decline if there is a change of place for one. If the friendship deteriorates, it is not a true one. The friendship at adult stage will not change, due to steadiness of mind.
The love among relatives will, in general, remain unchanged. It is natural to notice some ups and downs. Everyone should understand this. One will think of correcting some actions of others. In this attempt, there may appear some misunderstanding. After some time, they will console one another and strengthen their relationship. If they are separated due to profession, their affection will increase; there is no chance for one to often find fault with the other. The tendency to often correct others will decline over time. The one who makes mistakes will also correct himself. If there is a small tear in our dress, a nearby person will notice it; but, it won’t be seen by persons who are farther. In the same way, one’s fault will not be known, in general, to those who are at a far off place. Since there are no incidents which will decrease the affection, it increases. This is human nature. It is said that if there is no affection, it is like a log wood.
Therefore, we should live as lovable persons. Those who find fault with us are really doing us good. There is difference between finding faults and pointing faults. One should resist finding faults with others. One should correct his mistakes. Only then one can live a pleasant life.
August 9.
222. Sorrows remembered sweeten present joy. (Robert Pollok).
He does not suffer sorrow in sorrow, who does not look for pleasure in pleasure. (Thirukkurahl – 629).
இன்பத்துள் இன்பம் விழையாதான் துன்பத்துள்
துன்பம் உறுதல் இலன். (திருக்குறள் - 629).
Yinba(th)thuhl yinbam vizaiyaadhaan thunba(th)thuhl
Thunbam vurudhal yilan. (Thirukkurahl – 629).
It natural that pleasure and misery will appear and fade away in everyone’s life. It depends on their attitude. A pedestrian will be pleased if he gets a bicycle or a motorbike. It will be miserable for one to travel in a bicycle, if his car is in repair. For a homeless person, getting a house will give him happiness. It will be painful if one has to leave a palatial building, under certain circumstances, and live in an ordinary house. Therefore, the happiness and misery depend on the difference between the initial and later levels of their life.
Hence, one should live with the thought that life style could change. When we experience comforts, our thinking, speech, and actions should be within a limit. When we live a good life, we should not speak anything which will hurt others. In the same way, those who are in misery should not talk with anger and meanness. Both the groups of people should live with steady mind. After coming out of a miserable life, one should enjoy the life if one can get a good opportunity. It is not correct to despise the enjoyment, expecting better comforts. If we think of the earlier difficulties, the present improved situation can be enjoyed. The thought of progress in life is one aspect; enjoying the existing life is another. Therefore, one should not get too much involved in pleasure or misery in the life.
Therefore, the pleasure and misery will put our mind in control. We should not overdo anything in happiness. There has to be a steadiness in everything.
August 10.
223. One must be a wise reader to quote wisely and well. (Amos Alcott).
Water will flow from a well in the sand in proportion to the depth to which it is dug, and knowledge will flow from a man in proportion to his learning. (Thirukkurahl – 396).
தொட்டனைத்து ஊறும் மணற்கேணி; மாந்தர்க்குக்
கற்றனைத்து ஊறும் அறிவு. (திருக்குறள் - 396).
Thottanai(th)thu voorum mahnar-kaehni; maandharkku
Kartranai(th)thu voorum arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 396).
The life of everyone should be useful to others. One should help others according to his capability. One must have wealth if he wants to help in that way. It is not proper for a poor person to say that he would offer money to others. It is also not proper for one, who has money, not to help others.
The educational wisdom is also like that. A doctor can explain medical details. He can diagnose one’s disease and prescribe suitable medicine. In medicine, there are several specialties to gain experience. We approach such specialists as required and take medicines according to his advice. In the same way, we should think of listening to good advice and approach suitable persons. We should not listen to everything from others and act accordingly. We have to think whether the advisors are really great persons. We need a reasonable education even to think like that. The education is necessary for our progress. The educationists must develop the educational and general knowledge of the people. The educationists should educate others as the rich persons have to help the poor. Such persons should give only good advice. Such action will be helpful to control the people from succumbing to dangerous habits. Hence, the development and spreading of knowledge by the educationists is important for the prosperity of a country.
Therefore, everyone should be educated. The educationists should also learn further with enthusiasm. What is learnt should be told to others. If this is not followed, a developing nation will always be a developing nation. Let all of us realize this.
August 11.
224. It is almost a definition of a gentleman to say he is one who never inflicts. (Cardinal Newman).
The wise who seek for great advantage will not speak words that have not much profit. (Thirukkurahl – 198).
அரும்பயன் ஆயும் அறிவினார் சொல்லார்
பெரும்பயன் இல்லாத சொல். (திருக்குறள் -198).
Arum-payan aayum arivinaar sollaar
Perum-payan yillaadha soll. (Thirukkurahl – 198).
We categorize the people whom we meet daily as good people and bad people. A country is referred as good country if its good people are more than the bad ones, and vice-versa. If the living conditions are poor, the people are considered poor and the country as a poor country. But, if the people are of bad character, we consider the country as a bad one. Those who have characters such as stealing, cheating, beating and scolding others are considered as bad persons.
If one has to be considered as a good person, he must not involve in any of the above things. One should do any bad activity, even if others did not watch it. Even if one does not do any bad activity by himself, he should not instigate others. Anger will make a person deviate from the neutral position. Hence, one should not yield to anger. Boasting is also bad. This will lead to insulting others. The desire for something should be reduced. If the desire arises, it will lead to indulging in dangerous activities to fulfill the desire. The desire will evolve for wealth and fame. The desire towards other women is also bad. The epic Ramayana tells about the result of the desire towards other woman. The effect of desire over wealth is depicted in the epic Mahabharatha. The fights between different countries in the world are due to the desire for land. The conflict within a country is due to the desire for fame. Most of the conflicts in the families are due to property.
Therefore, good atmosphere will prevail where good people are there. All the people should be good. The dangerous things should be prevented immediately. Those who have to prevent the bad things should realize this. Only if all the people think like this, the country will progress. Everyone should do his duty without thinking that others will do.
August 12.
225. Happy is the house that shelters a friend. (Ralph Emerson).
The family of the man that daily entertains the guests who come to him shall not be laid waste by poverty. (Thirukkurahl – 83).
வருவிருந்து வைகலும் ஓம்புவான் வாழ்க்கை
பருவந்து பாழ்படுதல் இன்று. (திருக்குறள் - 83).
Varu-virundhu vaigalum voambuvaan vaazkkai
Paruvandhu paazh-padudhal yindru. (Thirukkurahl – 83).
All of us have, in general, have likes and dislikes. If the liking is on a material, we would like to acquire it, if we do not already possess it. The fault arises when we aspire to get it in higher amounts and in the desire of acquiring it for ourselves by denying to others; then we commit the mistake. If the desire on materials is shifted to kindness, there is no measure for it. If we live with kindness in our speech and association with one another, the troubles due to poverty will fade away.
There are different ways for people to get happiness. Many people would like the opportunities to gather together and talk with their beloved relatives and friends; poor people would even forget their misery and live. Though the affluent enjoy such a surrounding, they lose their happiness and suffer due to their dangerous habits. They lose their goodness in the name of ‘friendship’ due to their habits such as ‘drinking liquors’, use of ‘drugs’ and smoking. The relatives and friends would not frequent the house where there is no kindness. The relationship within the house would also be superficial. Hence, everyone should associate with kindness; they should meet one another whenever there is an opportunity; the visits should not be missed for want of time or on lethargy.
Therefore, the relationship and friendship should be perpetuated. The wrong association and adherence to dangerous habits should be avoided. The good friendship should be hailed and improved. By this, the life of everyone will reach heights.
August 13.
226. A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him, I may think aloud. (Ralph Emerson).
You should examine and secure the friendship of those who can speak so as to make you weep over a crime (before its commission) or rebuke you severely (after you have done it) and are able to teach you the ways of the world. (Thirukkurahl – 795).
அழச்சொல்லி அல்லது இடித்து வழக்குஅறிய
வல்லார்நட்பு ஆய்ந்து கொளல். (திருக்குறள் - 795).
Azha(ch)-solli alladhu yidi(th)thu vazhakkariya
Vallaar-natpu aaindhu kohlal. (Thirukkurahl – 795).
It is certain that there will be friends in everyone’s life. The difference between relatives and friends will vary for each person. We should focus our attention only on the friendship during our adult life. The friendship at school level will last long only with a few persons. The friendship gained during employment age will stay longer. If the thoughts of the two are alike, it becomes a great friendship. Such persons become great friends when they understand one another.
It is a common saying that ‘a person can be judged by knowing the character of his friends’. Since the friends are at the same level, they discuss their opinions and reach a conclusion. Condemning the mistake of the other is a helpful action. Friends will do like that. One will not tell others the mistake of his friends. It is wrong to conceal one’s mistake and avoid correction. By doing this, the mistakes will be increasing. Hence, good friendship involves in understanding one another and correcting their mistakes as well. Friendship should not be with one who does dangerous things; if there is a difference of opinion between them on an issue, one will try to destroy the other. The association between persons of good character can be called friendship.
Therefore, let us develop good friendship and live well.
August 14.
227. Shallow men believe in luck. (Ralph Emerson).
If a fool happens to get an immense fortune, his neighbors will enjoy it while his relations starve. (Thirukkurahl – 837).
ஏதிலார் ஆரத் தமர்பசிப்பர் பேதை
பெருஞ்செல்வம் உற்றக் கடை. (ஹிருக்குறள் - 837).
Yaedhilaar aara(th) thamar-pasippar paedhai
Perun(j)-selvam urtrak kadai. (Thirukkurahl – 837).
Everyone should live with an aim in life. Among those without any motivation, some people will lead an ordinary life from their earnings. But, some people would like to live with all comforts. They will not improve their basic qualifications to the required level. They will expect others’ help. Sometimes, they will think of getting wealth through dangerous pathways to fulfill their desire. Some others will think of getting rich by luck. Such persons will act according to the suggestions of others. Under such circumstances, the suggestions may not be good advices. They will talk cunningly for their own benefits and cheat others. Such deceivers will not be wise persons. One should not listen to such people. They will cheat by telling us that we can get money and materials without any hard work. They will enjoy the comforts and wealth from our source and then ignore us.
There are many people who are disappointed by buying lottery tickets. They will bet on some events and wait for the result. We do not use our knowledge and deceive ourselves due to our desire for materials. We are deceived by job offers. We are deceived by ‘foreign appointment’ words. We are deceived by offers of several lakhs of rupees. Therefore, we should not be carried away by words which kindle our desire. If the knowledge increases, we will not get deceived. Hence, we should increase our knowledge by associating and talking with wise persons and reading good books.
August 15.
228. Make yourself necessary to somebody. (Ralph Emerson).
To live surrounded by relatives, is the advantage to be derived from the acquisition of wealth. (Thirukkurahl – 524).
சுற்றத்தால் சுற்றப் படஒழுகல்; செல்வம்தான்
பெற்றத்தாற் பெற்ற பயன். (திருக்குறள் - 524).
Surtra(th)thaal surtra(p) pada-ozhugal selvam-thaan
Pertra(th)thaal pertra payan. (Thirukkurahl – 524).
Life means living together with everyone. No one can live without the help of others. We do not realize the involvement of others in the production and distribution of the materials which we use. The thought that we buy the things by paying money is wrong. The plants and trees help us in the form of our food and other useful materials. Due to our knowledge, we use such things in an apt way.
Being human being, we have to help others in a suitable way. We should also think of a happy life to others. We should offer the required help. It should be done in a good manner. Giving money or material to one and involve him in bad activities is not a good way to help. Due to these mean activities, many blunders are committed. The actions like theft, harming others and destroying properties increase. It is not correct to help those who hurt others. This should be realized by uneducated, educated, poor and rich persons. If the poor has physical strength, they should help others by their physical efforts. This thinking is absent among many people now. The rich persons help many people. But, such beneficiaries should also think of helping others in some form.
Everyone is bestowed with additional strength in some form. This should be remembered. Avoiding the throwing of garbage on the streets is also a help to others. In the same way, following sanitary procedures by everyone is also a help. This does not require education or wealth. Therefore, every one of us should help others in whatever way it is possible. Only then, the country can become great; we can also live well.
August 16.
229. The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor the crops – no, but the kind of man the country turns out. (Ralph Emerson).
A kingdom is that in which those who carry on a complete cultivation, virtuous persons, and merchants with inexhaustible wealth, dwell together. (Thirukkurahl – 731).
தள்ளா விளையுளும் தக்காரும் தாழ்விலாச்
செல்வரும் சேர்வது நாடு. (திருக்குறள் - 731).
Thahllaa vihlaiyuhlum thakkaarum thaazhvilaa(ch)
Selvarum saervadhu naadu. (Thirukkurahl – 731).
We categorize the countries into developing countries and developed countries. What are the reasons for considering a country as a developed country? If the people in a country live with all comforts, the country can generally be called a developed one. In that case, we should find out about the various factors which give us comfort. Everyone should have house, food and dress. Further, the living surroundings should be clean. People should live without any disease. Medical facility for curing illnesses must be there. The strenuous part of the work of the people should be mechanized, so that the life becomes easier. All places should have road facility. If there are more vehicles in a place, the roads should be wider. To reduce the travel time, there should be bridges at various places. There should be availability of seats, as required, during travel by bus or train. Air travel facility should be there. The people should have enough resources to meet the travel expenses. Like this, we can list several things.
All the above things are required for the people. A country can be considered developed to the extent the above requirements are met. But, the people never think of their commitment for the development of their country. First, people should control their desires. They should limit their comforts according to their capability. Even though one can afford more, he should think of a life with just sufficient properties and materials. Our breath takes the air only to a sufficient level. We eat food within the capacity of our stomach. We dress to our body size; the nature of the dress depends on the climate. These things are not used beyond a limit; they cannot be exceeded either. When there is a limit for the essential things, there should be a limit for our desires also.
Hence, if we realize this and act, our human behavior will improve. If our behavior is improved, we can fulfill others’ needs. There will be a way also for others to live well. The country will also become a developed one.
August 17.
230. The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it. (Ralph Emerson).
Friendship may be said to be on its throne when it possesses the power of supporting one at all times and under all circumstances (in the practice of virtue and wealth). (Thirukkurahl – 789).
நட்பிற்கு வீற்றிருக்கை யாதெனின் கொட்பின்றி
ஒல்லும்வாய் ஊன்றும் நிலை. (திருக்குறள் - 789).
Natpirkku veertr(u)-irukkai yaadhenil kotpindri
Vollum-vaai oondrum nilai. (Thirukkurahl – 789).
The tourism will be great if a country is great. Likewise, the number of visitors to a house will increase, if the house is good. Therefore, we should know about what we mean by the word good. Kindness, neatness and facilities are important.
When we go to a house, they should welcome us. If not, it is equal to our boarding a train or bus. When we enter a plane, they welcome us. If the employees are happy, they will work with good attitude in that place. The employees must be taught of good behavior. The people must develop the character of respecting one another. This behavior must be taught from the young age at school. This good habit can be seen in some houses. In general, in most houses, opportunities to cultivate such good habits may not be present. Hence, it is the school which has to develop such good habits. One must know what a good habit is. One must move with others with kindness. One should not get angry. Others must be respected while talking. Only if we respect others, they will respect us. Others should not be cheated. The drivers of hired vehicles and businessmen should be honest. If the greatness of truth is realized at the young age, they will work honestly in offices, when they grow into adults. Cleanliness must be adhered to. We stop with reading such things; we never show it in action. The reason for this is poverty and illiteracy.
Therefore, kindness should be practiced at home. Cleanliness must be in mind and appearance. One must also have facility. No guest will visit us, if we don’t have proper place and food to offer them. If these two things are present but not kindness, the place will be equivalent to one without human being. The house without the visits of relatives and friends is considered as the sky without the moon. Hence, good friendship should be cultivated; good friends must be acquired.
August 18.
231. Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy. (Ralph Emerson).
Humility and sweetness of speech are the ornaments of man; all others are not (ornaments). (Thirukkurahl – 95).
பணிவுடையன் இன்சொலன் ஆதல் ஒருவர்க்கு
அணி; அல்ல மற்றுப்பிற. (திருக்குறள் - 95).
Pahnivudaiyan insolan aadhal oruvarkku
Ahni;-alla martru(p) pira. (Thirukkurahl – 95).
It is natural that there will be people of different types in the world. If good people are in majority, that country is considered as good. It is difficult to fix the percentage of the good people for a good country. One should find out how many dangerous activities take place in a country. Only if the nature of the dangerous activities is known, it can be prevented.
The activities which hurt the feelings of the people are dangerous activities. The actions which spoil people are worse. The actions which destroy people are the worst. The children first learn to walk. Then they learn to talk. The young children must be taught to use good words. In certain languages there are different words to show respect for the same action. Everyone should use words which will express respect to others. Some persons use undignified words to scold others. This should be avoided. Proper education will eliminate the usage of such words. Further, one should move with affection to the children in the house. The children who observe this will also move with affection towards others. If we talk with anger to a child, it will also talk with anger with others. Instead of commanding a person to do a work, a kind approach will ensure proper result. After the completion of the work, he should be thanked. If this good habit is practiced at home and school, our next generation will be filled with dignified persons.
Therefore, everyone should speak and associate with others with dignity and kindness. If this habit is instilled, they will not deceive others; they will not do bad things to others. Hence, for building a good society, the first step is to show kindness and respect to others.
August 19.
232. Great men are they who see that spiritual is stronger than any material force, that thoughts rule the world. (Ralph Emerson).
The wealth of kindness is wealth of wealth; the wealth of property is possessed by the basest of men, as well as (by the good). (Thirukkurahl – 241).

We can categorize our strength into two groups. They can be called as inner strength and outer strength. We all know our outer strength. This is needed for everyone. We all should possess physical strength. If the physical strength is good, the will power – the inner strength – will invariably be there. If the physical strength decreases, the occurrence of illness will increase.
A country’s strength is enhanced by its economic status. The economic growth depends on the people’s status of life. If the people struggle for food and healthy life, the country will be considered as an underdeveloped one. Therefore, economic growth is essential. The situation, in which some people enjoy all the comforts while the majority suffers, is not the sign of development. Such poverty will diminish the good characters of the people. Due to the diminishing of good character, people will indulge in dangerous activities. The actions like burglary and cheating will increase. People suffer due to this. To prevent such a situation, people should possess the attitude of not involving in any dangerous activity, even under miserable circumstances. For this, they should think that ‘kindness is the apt way’. This is enlightened by philosophy.
Therefore, if kindness prevails in the minds of the people, they will not do any improper activities. If this ‘kind’ heart prevails among everyone, without any variation between poor, rich and physically strong people, the country will progress. Hence, everyone should develop kindness between one another. If love increases, the thought of destruction and obstruction of others will vanish, and the country will flourish.

Many incidents occur in the world. Some persons will enjoy and relish the good incidents that take place. But many people will feel sad for the heart-rending bad incidents. Those who are directly affected will feel bad to a greater extent. Those who are farther will extend their help. Some nearby people will get agitated; some others who are nearby will instantly render all the help to the affected persons, without getting agitated. We should have such strong will-power.
Those who directly experience the misery will be calm due to the deep trouble. Some who witness the miserable incidents will indulge in wrong actions. Such actions will, sometimes, lead to further troubles. If an accident occurs, some will demand money from the concerned person; sometimes, they hurt him too. The injured victims are robbed too. Further, when a house is damaged by fire or flood, some persons try to take away something from that house. Good persons will not involve in such mean activities. Those who do such bad activities should realize themselves. To get this realization, one should have education and the intention to listen to good persons. One should not give an excuse of poverty for indulging in wrong actions. Those who are not poor will not, in general, involve in such bad activities. Great persons will always perform worthy deeds.
Therefore, let us get good education and live with good character.
