253. Man can learn nothing unless he proceeds from the known to the unknown. (Claude Bernard).
To make one undertaking the means of accomplishing another (similar to it) is like making one rutting elephant the means of capturing another. (Thirukkurahl – 678).
Vinaiyaan vinaiyaakkik koadal nanaigavuhl
Yaanaiyaal yaanaiyaath thartru. (Thirukkurahl – 678).
In order to learn a language, one has to know the alphabets and pronunciation. Then the words in that language and their meanings have to be learnt. Later, the grammar must be learnt. After learning the language, we have to read books in that language. Then only we can become proficient in that language. Like this, many examples can be quoted.
The enormous developments that we have obtained in our generation in science, engineering, medicine and other areas are due to the hard work over the years. With such efforts, man could land on the moon, stay in space for months in spacecraft, and accomplish other inventions. Laser and laser techniques have been developed, which led to surgical procedures without loss of blood. Great developments in the computer area have been achieved in the last 40-50 years. All these developments have been possible only from the basic information. It is said that in the world, everyone eats food, talks something, and moves around; but, it will be considered great, only if one ventures to do a difficult and great work, by elevating himself on the basis of reading a good book.
Hence, one should learn gradually and practice in the same discipline. By gaining such an experience, one can accomplish great things by consistent effort.

254. Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. (Soren Kierkegaard).
Let a man reflect on what will be lost, what will be acquired, and (from these) what will be his ultimate gain, and (then, let him) act. (Thirukkurahl – 461).
Azhivadhoo-um aavadhoo-um aaghi vazhi-payakkum
Oodhiyamum soozhndhu seyal. (Thirukkurahl – 461).
It is natural to find the life of people to be at least a little different from one another. We are pleased if we get what is aspired; otherwise, we regret. If we are often unsuccessful, we feel dejected. Hence, happiness and sorrow arise from our mind.
Our thoughts arise based on our earlier experiences. If we are brought up with good habits and good friends, our thoughts and expectations would be good. If our brought up was good, we would raise our children in a good manner. Even if our brought up was bad, we should not create similar bad situation to our children. By continuing improper practices, we lead our children towards destruction. Many people do not realize this. Only if we correct the faults of our earlier generation and ours, the next generation and our future will be good. Therefore, we should review our early life. If it were good, we should adhere to it. If not, we should leave it and pursue a good path.
It is said that it would be good to keep our childhood photo in our house at a prominent location; the reason behind it is that we would remember our young days, and the way we grew up. When we think of it, we will be able to follow good pathways. Therefore, let us remember the past and build the future.
September 11.
255. How sweet and gracious, even in common speech, is that fine sense which men call courtesy. (James Thomas Fields).
Affectioateness and birth in a good family, these two constitute what is called a proper behavior to all. (Thirukkurahl – 992).
Anbudaimai aandra kudi(p)-pira(th)thal yivvirahndum
Pahnbudaimai yennum vazhakku. (Thirukkurahl – 992).
Kindness is one of the qualities that everyone should possess in life. One should speak in kind words and obtain others’ love. Just like mirror reflects our image, our sweet words to others will make them be kind towards us and make us happy too.
We have to think about when we could speak with kind words. We have to be happy to speak in kind words. Hence, the surroundings must be good. If such a situation does not exist, we have to read the books which tell about things propagated by learned persons. One should read such good books and follow the same. While we speak, we should look at the face to whom we talk. Under such circumstances, others will find out whether we say the truth, by looking at our face. A proverb says that ‘the face will reflect what is in the mind’. When there is hatred in the mind, one cannot be smiling. Even if they try to conceal the hatred by a false smile, their eyes will reflect their hatred. Next, one should think about what and how to speak, before the start. Due to these precautions, our mouth has teeth and lips as fence for controlling our words.
Hence, everyone must have purity of mind. We should safeguard ourselves from bad qualities such as anger, lie, envy, covet, and arrogance, which damage our purity of mind. Kindness is strength.
September 12.
256. I slept and dreamed that life was beauty. I woke – and found that life was duty. (Ellen Sturgis Hooper).
Let (a king) act, after having well considered the agent (whom he is to employ), the deed (he desires to do), and the time which is suitable to it. (Thirukkurahl – 516).
Seivaanai naadi vinai-naadi(k) kaala(th)thodu
Yeidha vuhnarndhu seyal. (Thirukkurahl – 516).
The words of our former president, Dr.Abdul Kalam, that everyone should have dream about their life, would have induced good thinking in us. The dream means what we should become and what we should do to accomplish the goal of our life.
The word ‘goal’ is to be used to represent good aim; it should not cause damage to others and the country. The thought of becoming learned, knowledgeable and studious persons must be the aim. In life, one must work to accomplish the goal and maintain it properly. This effort is to be considered as our responsibility. It is not possible to list here the responsibilities of all the people. If teachers discharge their duty in proper way, the next generation will be good. If the police could perform their duty properly, the number of cases will come down. If there is honesty in the construction sector, there will be a good quality work, less wastage, and enhanced development. If thugs think about good principles, the violence will come down. If the health department personnel work honestly, healthy life can be achieved everywhere. To set right these activities, the leaders must work with full concentration.
Therefore, let us work well with good aim and enjoy good life.
September 13.
257. Talent is that which is in a man’s power; genius is that in whose power a man is. (James Russell Lowell).
Not to permit (the mind) to go where it lists, to keep it from evil, and to employ it in good, this is wisdom. (Thirukkurahl – 422).
Sendra yida(th)thaal selavidaa theethoree-e
Nandrinpaal vuippadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 422).
The proverb ‘Art work and speech will improve by practice’ is a frequently used one. This is applicable to all activities. One can excel well, if the person consistently works in that line, what ever it may be.
Handiworks will improve by practice. Our handwriting will not be beautiful in the beginning; we all know that our handwriting improves considerably over a few years. This occurs by practice. But, writing the words without mistakes, and using appropriate words at the required place depend on our knowledge. The manner of running a 100-meter race with a speed required for a 1000-meter race is based on our mind. Reading at a school student level, while doing higher studies in a college, is based on our mind. Those who do something without realizing the situation will be termed as mentally affected and not sufficiently knowledgeable. Therefore, practice is necessary to improve the outer look; but, for development knowledge is necessary. For improving the knowledge, in general, teachers, learned persons, and parents help us. We should be in a position to absorb it. Such capacity is in our brain. Our arrogance and anger, like a rock lid, cover our capability from rising to the surface.
Hence, we should grow with good principles to develop our knowledge. We can perform our duty properly, if we work with honesty and enthusiasm. If we improve, our country will also improve.
September 14.
258. Give a little love to a child and you get a great deal back. (John Ruskin).
The prosperity of the world springs from the kindness (of kings); the existence of those (kings) who have no (kindness) is a burden to the earth. (Thirukkurahl – 572).
Kahnnotta(th)thu vuhllathu ulaghial; agthilaar
Uhnmai nilakkup porai. (Thirukkurahl – 572).
One of the valuable characters of a person is to possess kindness. One should adhere to this from the young age. Elders and parents should speak to the children with love.
The children will grasp in full, whatever they see and hear, and absorb it as a piercing nail in a tender tree. It is probably to emphasize the importance of kindness to children, the chapter of ‘on love’ (chapter 8) is placed next to ‘on obtaining children’ (chapter 7) in Thirukkurahl. It is generally said that whatever we do will return to us in ten-fold. Hence, if we show love to children, we will get it many fold. We should not think that it will come immediately. We should think that it is possible when we grow older and the children are grown up. If one behaves without love in the house, it will be like a grown tree in a desert, which will not be useful to anyone; further, it is said that the unkind persons are burden to the earth and their life is also a waste.
Hence, the children are to be brought up with love. There should be a limit, even if some restrictions are needed. Therefore, when we emphasize the importance of love to the children, it is intended to make the children realize the need to love the family, relatives, friends, and others. Hence, let us move with others with love, and live happily.
September 15.
259. Superstition may be defined as constructive religion which has grown incongruous with intelligence. (John Tyndall).
An adverse fate produces folly, and a prosperous fate produces enlarged knowledge. (Thirukkurahl – 372).
Paedhaip padukkum yizhavoozh; arivakartrum
Aagal-voozh vurtrak kadai. (Thirukkurahl – 372).
The lifestyle of all us will not be the same. Some people live as poor, while some live with all comforts. Many poor people lead an unhealthy life. The reason is that they have no, or less, education.
Education helps us to know about the good habits and their importance. About 50 years ago, if the children suffered from fever, many parents used take them to a ritual procedure, instead of to a doctor. The reason was poverty and non-availability of medical facility to many. They lived with the belief that God would save them. This kind of belief persisted with the people. Due to scientific development, and growth of education, the non-explainable beliefs started to dwindle from the minds of the people. Like this, the life of people remained in two ways. Now, we follow medical and living methods with belief in God. However, when we look at it carefully, we cannot understand many things that happen in the world. Many examples can be quoted here. Questions like how a child grows in its mother’s womb, how the trees retain their qualities, why we get anger, and so on, arise from various activities that take place in the world. Our explanations to some of the questions may appear reasonable.
Thus, growth of our knowledge and belief on the unexplainable happenings surround us. Let us hope and live with the idea that both will encourage us.
September 16.
260. Education has for its object the formation of character. (Herbert Spencer).
What benefit has he derived from his knowledge, who does not endeavor to keep off pain from another, as much as from himself? (Thirukkurahl – 315).
Arivinaan aaguvadhu vuhndoa? Piridhin-noai
Thum-noaipoal portraak kadai. (Thirukkurahl – 315).
There are many proverbs and Thirukkurahls which emphasize the necessity of education and good character for the students and people. Many literary works also help us to develop our good character.
We should learn good principles; it should be put into practice. In early days when educational opportunity was not available, good principles would reach the common man through religious stories in the form of folk dances and discourses. But, only a few people could get benefitted by that. In the present days, people could get the information easily due to better educational opportunities, and through films and televisions. One should utilize these methods in a proper way. One should acquire good principles, and live as good people; they should get the appreciation from wise persons. Even if they possess good education and wealth, they must not be proud of it. One should respect the elders; the poor must not be ridiculed. One must move with spouse, children, and others with love. Stealing and telling lies should be desisted. One should do the assigned work properly and faithfully. One should help others as much as possible. Like this, there are so many good principles.
Thus, the education helps us to know about good principles and good habits. By keeping this mind, we should lead a good life. Those who don’t have good character are viewed even as skeleton covered by skin. Let us live as good human being.
September 17.
261. Opinion is ultimately determined by the feelings, and not by the intellect. (Herbert Spencer).
He is to be esteemed a god who is able to ascertain without a doubt what is within (one’s mind). (Thirukkurahl – 702).
Ayyap padaa-adhu aghaththadhu uhnarvaanaith
Dhaivaththodu voppak kohlal. (Thirukkurahl – 702).
Education is important for our progress in life. We know about the value of wealth. Only some know about the value of education. There will be debates on the value of wealth and education. At the end of the debate, even if education is declared as more valuable, nobody will underestimate the value of wealth.
Everyone would like to enjoy the various facilities in a house. Even if there is a good house, good surroundings, vehicle, wealth and others, some persons would not be happy. In an office or industry, even if the employees are provided with all the facilities, some do not work with satisfaction. Sometimes, those who occupy high positions, and students who get high marks, are not happy. The reason for this is their surroundings which lacks kindness. If there is no love in the household, even an affluent atmosphere will look like a hell. If the superiors are inhumane, in an office or industry, we will lose happiness and work with disgust. If teachers fail to appreciate the students’ knowledge and accomplishments, but always find fault with them, such students will lose their happiness and enthusiasm.
Therefore, whether a place is home or office, one should not talk or do something so as to hurt others. The happiness of a person must arise from his mind. The pleasure from materials will not last for long. Everyone will know the difference between receiving an award from a learned person and a machine. Therefore, the one who understands others’ minds will always be great. Let us be like that.
September 18.
262. Doing easily what others find difficult is talent; doing what is impossible for talent is genius. (Henri—Frederic Amiel).
If those who have planned (an undertaking) possess firmness (in executing it), they will obtain what they have desired even as they have desired it. (Thirukkurahl – 666).
Yehnniya yehnniyaangu yeithuba yehnniyaar
Thihnniar aagap perin. (Thirukkurahl – 666).
A person has to work properly and intelligently in order to progress in life. Effort alone will not be sufficient for big achievement. Whatever work we do, it will be good if we use our intelligence.
One should think of the works, which were done in early days. Later, electricity was invented by intelligent work. Over the years electrical appliances were fabricated. Intelligent people first invent many things. Then, by hard work, the products have been further improved and made in large quantities; by this way, many businesses and industries have grown well. During studies, memorizing a poem and writing it without any mistake is the result of consistent effort. Writing an article or a poem about something or principle, is due to intelligence. Effort is required to build a beautiful building. Only learned persons will be able to create a society consisting intelligent students and people. Beautiful buildings will remain as an exhibit for some duration, depending on its maintenance, before it gets damaged. But, the countries which have wise people keep growing.
Therefore, effort is necessary. Efforts with wisdom will be greater than that. Let us think about achieving it.
September 19.
263. Culture, the acquainting ourselves with the best, that has been known and said in the world. (Mathew Arnold).
Affection, fear (of sin), benevolence, favor and truthfulness; these are the five pillars on which perfect goodness rests. (Thirukkurahl – 983).
Anbu-naahn oppuravu kahn-ottam vaaimaiyodu
Aindhu-saalbu oondria thoohn. (Thirukkurahl – 983).
Every one of us follows some customs. They become part of us in due course. Certain things last for centuries by following the practices generation after generation. Only good things last long.
The child born in English speaking country will speak in English. It will speak German if born in German speaking place. Like this, the child grows according to the environment. A child will speak the language of the country, even if it has the opportunity to know its mother tongue through its parents. Likewise, our character develops depending upon the surrounding. If a child grows in a family where there are persistent quarrels, it will also become a quarrelsome child. It will not know about peaceful and happy life. It is rare to be healthy for a child grown in unhealthy conditions. If physical health deteriorates, mental strength will also weaken. Hence, for the development of good character, a good sanitary surrounding, poverty-free family, and good friendship are necessary. We need such people who would create these facilities and maintain them properly.
Hence, we should follow the practices which are advocated as good by the world. Those who are responsible to create such an atmosphere should work as much as possible, without selfishness. It is a great boon for a person to get such a thought and perform it in life. Good character yields elevation.
September 20.
264. Little deeds of kindness, little words of love, help to make earth happy like the heaven above. (Julia A.Fletcher Carney).
If the married life possesses love and virtue, these will be both its duty and reward. (Thirukkurahl – 45).
Anbum aranum vudai(th)thaayin yilvaazh(k)kai;
Pahnbum payanum adhu. (Thirukkurahl – 45).
Virtuous deeds and kindness in speech are emphasized by wise persons. Good deeds must be done to help others without expecting any return. It is said that there is nothing equivalent to kindness in speech and look.
The help rendered to others must be done based on their requirements. One should offer food for starving persons, and suitable cloth for the needy. Teaching students to improve their knowledge and creation of such facilities are good. However, it should not be in the amassing of wealth. The creation of medical facilities should also be in such a good intention. In addition, one should adhere to kindness in speech. It is known to everyone that dangerous people will always hurt others. But, the unkind people will get punished by nature. Kindness should be expressed in look, speech, and action. Some actions and speeches may appear to be of kind nature; however, their eyes will expose their folly.
Virtuousness is good. Kindness is good. Thinking them as rails, let us lead our life as a train and travel safely without derailment.
September 21.
265. The spirit of truth and the spirit of freedom – they are the pillars of society. (Henrik Ibsen).
He, who in his conduct preserves a mind free from deceit, will dwell in the minds of all men. (Thirukkurahl – 294).
Vuhlla(th)thaal poyyaadhu ozhughin vulaga(th)thaar
Vuhlla(th)thuhl yellaam vuhlan. (Thirukkurahl – 294).
All of us are good people. The world will appreciate us based on our level of goodness. Being truthful is an important step in this line.
If the head of a family behaves properly, happiness will prevail in that family. If students are truthful, the institute will be proud. If the ministers and authorities are truthful, the nation will prosper well. Likewise, it is important for the people to be honest. The requirement for this is the prevalence of sense of freedom. This freedom does not mean that we can do anything, or need not do anything at all. Some activities must be carried out with certain control. One should not think of going to work or school at any time. The buses, trains, and planes should depart at the stipulated timings. In offices, the work should not be immediately stopped as a machine at the end of the day, whether the work was completed or not. In industries, the workers will have the thought of completing the work, if they are happy and enjoy freedom.
Therefore, truthful life and an atmosphere of freedom will enhance the family. If the family improves, the place, the nation, and the society will improve. This is important for the growth of a nation, just like pillars of a building. Hence, for the improvement of our life, let us speak the truth and work honestly, and be proud.
September 22.
266. There can be no freedom or beauty about a home life that depends on borrowing and debt. (Henrik Ibsen).
Kings should rather avoid than seek the accumulation of wealth which does not flow in with mercy and love. (Thirukkurahl – 755).
Aruhlodum anbodum vaaraa(p) poruhl-aakkam
Pullaar purahla vidal. (Thirukkurahl – 755).
In life, every one may and must have aim, depending upon the situation. Young child enjoys the pleasure of its parents’ hug, even though it may not understand their love. During school going age, one’s thought centre’s around playing with friends, getting good marks in the class, participating in games, and winning in games. During youth, the aim will change.
When young as child or kid, the parents fulfill the aspirations of them. During youthful years, they take up jobs and also enter family life. The family must be taken care of by both husband and wife, in a good manner. They should control the expenditure, depending upon the family income. They should not think of an affluent life, by emulating others. Such thoughts would lead to improper methods to earn money to meet the enhanced expenditures. This would curtail mental peace, and lead to punishment and shame. To avoid this, one would like to borrow from others. If the loan is not returned on time, it would lead to additional problems, and misery. These things will happen when the money is earned in a wrong way, or borrowed from others.
Therefore, aim is necessary to improve work and education. However, we should keep our life under our control. Wish is different from aim. Hence, one should not allow the growth of wish in the name of aim.
September 23.
267. I hold that man is in the right who is most closely in league with the future. (Henrik Ibsen).
No terrifying calamity will happen to the wise, who (foresee and) guard against coming evils. (Thirukkurahl – 429).
Yethiradhaa(k) kaakkum arivinaarkku yillai
Athira varuvadhore noai. (Thirukkurahl – 429).
In general, we divide the time as past, present and future. All of us live by thinking about the past life, and how we are living now. Only some people think about the future.
The thought on what we should study, and for which job we should get training can be considered as aim. These are required to enhance our standard of life. In the same way, we should think of the ways to eliminate the obstacles in our life. Such thoughts are essential for the leaders who rule the country. Officers are needed who are capable of advising such leaders. If one wants to become such a knowledgeable officer, he (she) must study well from the young age itself. General knowledge also must be developed. One should grow with good character from the young age itself, without committing any mistake or crime.
Therefore, it is not enough to just accumulate wealth for the future. One should think of the future requirement and do accordingly. It takes a few years to build a dam to store water. It takes 7-8 years to build a power plant for the generation of electricity. It requires a few years to strengthen the defense system. Planning is necessary for development in the food and agricultural area. Let us grow so as to plan properly for future development of our nation.
September 24.
268. The more is given the less the people will work for themselves, and the less they work the more their poverty will increase. (Leo Tolstoi).
It is a rare thing for the idle, even if they receive the aid of kings, to derive any great benefit from it. (Thirukkurahl – 606).
Padi-yudaiyaar partramaindha(k) kahnnum madiyudaiyaar
Maahn-payan yeidhal aridhu. (Thirukkurahl – 606).
Everyone should think that all the people in the world must have good life. The thought that everyone should have the same type of life is not correct. In school, those who study well will get high marks; those who study less will get low marks.
Those who are less educated will get lower jobs and lower salary. One should maintain the family within the income amount. Instead, if money is borrowed or earned in an unlawful method to meet the expenditure, it is wrong. By this, the family’s nice atmosphere and the nation’s prestige would be spoiled. The world would condemn a nation wherein theft and cheating are prevalent. If the world condemns, a nation cannot prosper. If a country does not develop well, poverty will increase. If a country is poor, it will affect the poor people very much. Due to decline in employment opportunities many persons, especially the poor, get affected; to overcome this difficulty, the government steps in to help the people. Those who receive such help become complacent; they either desist from going to available jobs, or remain unenthusiastic in their jobs. This leads to increase in laziness and poverty.
Therefore, everyone should do their work well, as much as possible. Let us all live with the thinking that public welfare and country’s development are important.
September 25.
269. Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right. (Carl Schurz).
The learned say that the best kingdom is that which knows no evil (from its foes) and, if injured (at all), suffers no diminution in its fruitfulness. (Thirukkurahl – 736).
Kaed(u)-ariyaa(k) ketta yida(th)thum vahlangundraa
Naadenba naattin thalai. (Thirukkurahl – 736).
We would safeguard our books and play-materials in young age. If someone tears our book, we would try to prevent it. Such thoughts do not prevail with many of us when grown. The thought of our house and our country must prevail in us.
If any calamity occurs in our country, every one of us would be affected. Such dangerous incidents must be prevented. We hurt those whom we don’t like; we destroy their properties. Sometimes, public properties are also damaged. The public properties must also be protected, just like our properties. If there are thorns and stones on the pathway, we should pick them up and put them on the side. In the same way, if our co-workers err in their duty, we should correct them. Further, we should be sincere in our work. Wasting the time at work, and poor execution of the work would bring misfortune to the country. Therefore, the workers and the supervising personnel should be sincere in their work. This attitude should prevail with everyone and at all times.
Therefore, we should work with sincerity. Cheating others is equivalent to cheating ourselves. Dangerous results of this action would be known to us and others, after a few years. Hence, let us live with good character, help others to live well, and put the country in the progressive path.
September 26.
270. Genius does what it must, and talent does what it can. (Earl of Lytton).
There is nothing which may not be accomplished by those who, before they attack (an enemy), make themselves acquainted with their own ability and with whatever else is (needful) to be known, and apply themselves wholly to their object. (Thirukkurahl – 472).
O-l-vadhu arivadhu arindhathan kahnthangi
Selvaarkku(ch) sellaadhadhu ill. (Thirukkurahl – 472).
We see various objects in the world. What we see are either naturally available or man-made materials. It may require the efforts of so many people to complete a work. Some work is being done daily, and gained experience. People daily make cycles, bikes, cars, electrical things and others in thousands. Due to the experience, they excel in that area and get fame. However, we should remember the persons who have designed and made such materials.
It is a great work who makes a thing at first. It requires intelligence. A song in a Tamil cinema gives some examples. It tells that airplane was devised by looking at the flying birds. Boat was designed by seeing the fish. Intelligent people built ships which can float on water, using iron, which is denser than water; submarines were built which can go underneath the water and come out whenever is necessary. The persons who have perfected these devices are knowledgeable ones.
Therefore, we need both intelligent and knowledgeable people. Only then we could be on top in the world. The findings of the intelligent people in computer area are great. Like this, we should prepare ourselves to do well in many areas based on our knowledge and efficiency. One should think about precautionary methods ahead of any possible troubles. Let us lead a good and lofty life, without wasting it on entertainments.

271. Love thou the rose, yet leave it on its stem. (Earl of Lytton).
The study of kindness and the attainment of love (to it) is not with those, who watch for another’s forgetfulness, through desire of this property. (Thirukkurahl – 285).
Aruhl-karuthi anbudaiyaar aadhal poruhl-karuthi(p)
Po(ch)chaappu(p) paarppaan-kahn yill. (Thirukkurahl – 285).
Among the parts of our body, eyes are very important. We see the objects around us through the eyes. By the help of brain, we recognize the objects which we see through the eyes. The efficiency of the brain is improved by listening through ears and vast reading. If it is not learnt by listening and reading, our brain will not be developed proportionate to our physical growth.
Thus, the brain informs us what we see. If the brain does not work properly, we will not know what we see through eyes. When we get angry, our brain could not use its power. When we talk over cell phone or play some games, our brain gets immersed in that; this prevents us from knowing the surroundings. Due to this situation, many accidents occur. We see the loss of life too. Therefore, we should protect the brain from any damage. While brain works like that, our mind would like to get what the eyes see. Due to this reason, our mind desires to possess and enjoy whatever the eyes see. The brain will permit only the required things for possession. But, the mind will make a person to aspire for unnecessary things and enormous wealth. The mind should emphasize kindness. The brain should show the ways for such actions. Thus, let us act by the combined efforts of the mind and brain.

272. Truth is the only merit that gives dignity and worth to history. (Lord Acton).
He, who in his conduct preserves a mind free from deceit, will dwell in the minds of all men. (Thirukkurahl – 294).
Vuhlla(th)thaal poyyaadhu ozhughin vulaga(th)thaar
Vuhlla(th)thuhl yellaam vuhlan. (Thirukkurahl – 294).
Among the good principles which we should adhere to, sincerity is one. In India, we have the story of Harichandra, which emphasizes the practice of saying only truth, under any adverse circumstances. In that story, we observe that the king, Harichandra, did not tell lie, even at a crucial time, when he was to sacrifice his wife and son. Appreciating his steadfastness for honesty, the kingdom and family were restored, as the story ends. This story was the first film in the Indian cinema industries.
We all realize that truth is great. However, in the family life, some people indulge in activities wherein truth is discarded. This results in vast damage of the country’s economy, in addition to their and others’ well-being. If the food materials, medicines, buildings, bridges, educational institutions, and other materials are not of good quality, it would cause huge damages and loss to the civic system, properties, buildings, life, and even to the society. Those who are responsible for such things would lament on it in their old age. At that stage they cannot rectify their past bad deeds. If workers commit some mistakes inadvertently, the supervisors should set right the work and the workers. One should not deviate from the righteous path with a view to earn money and accumulate wealth.
Therefore, one should always be truthful. Only our fame would remain after our demise. The fame arising from sincere actions alone would stand the time. Let us emphasize this from the young age.
September 29.
273. Give me a man that is capable of a devotion to anything, rather than a cold, calculating average of all the virtues. (Bret Harte).
The great will not esteem those who esteem not firmness of action, whatever other abilities the latter may possess. (Thirukkurahl – 670).
Yenai(th)-thitpam yeithiyak kahnnum vinai(th)-thitpam
Vaehndaarai vaehndaadhu vulagu. (Thirukkurahl – 670).
In young years, we should study with an aim. Only then we could acquire good education and knowledge. After completing the education, we should think and select the nature of the work and then take it up. One should not switch jobs often, but become expert in a particular area.
The above principle would be easy to understand, if we look at the sports people. We all know the difference in the running procedure in 100 meters and 42 KM (marathon) events. If one participates in both the events, it is difficult to win in any one event. If one works in different areas, he cannot shine in anything. Little knowledge in many things would be useful only for public lecture. Hence, when a work is carried out, one should focus his full attention on it and complete the work properly, and on time. Only such people could accomplish great things in the electricity generation, food production, computer area, medical field, and other areas. While at work, one should not think of his personal benefit, or wasting the time. Many people do not think of the wastage of man-hours and man-power, when they leave an organization after getting good training in it. This will cause national loss.
Therefore, one should get good training in one area, and work in that line with full satisfaction. One should avoid working with selfishness. We should think that we can progress only if the country develops.
September 30.
274. The ignorant man always adores what he cannot understand. (Cesare Lombroso).
If the fool, who knows not how to act, undertakes a work, he will (certainly) fail, (but) is it all? He will even adorn himself with fetters. (Thirukkurahl – 836).
Poi(p)-padum vondroa? punai-poohnum khai-yariyaa(p)
Paedhai vinai-maer kohlin. (Thirukkurahl – 836).
When we study in school, we may understand certain things easily, while some are difficult. We have to concentrate more and learn in the area wherein we are interested, and progress in life. There are some people who say they don’t understand anything, and waste their time.
If one could not get his education in young age, it is difficult to learn after some years. Such people, invariably, would lead a miserable life. Some of them may lead a comfortable life, due to some reasons. These people would always praise others. They would conceal their ignorance. There are people who would offer gifts and extend help to those who praise them. If this is perpetuated, the number of people who live on false prestige and those who cover their ignorance will increase in the world. If this trend continues, there will be a decrease in the number of learned persons. If somebody becomes popular and famous, one should know whether such a person is a really capable one. To assess this, we must find out who praises that person.
Therefore, all of us must have basic education. Only education will help us to gain knowledge. Let us strive to propagate education and help everyone to get education.
October 1.
275. Literature is an investment of genius which pays dividends to all subsequent times. (John Burroughs).
The learned will long (for more learning), when they see that while it gives pleasure to themselves, the world also derives pleasure from it. (Thirukkurahl – 399).
Thaam-yin buruvathu vulag(u)-in burak-kahndu
Kaamuruvar kartrarin dhaar. (Thirukkurahl – 399).
We should assess our own activities. By doing this, we could perform our work in a better manner.
Teachers must teach the students so as to increase their motivation in studies. Their thinking capacity must be developed. The reading habit must be cultivated in students. The childhood habits would continue even when they grow older. We can learn a lot by reading books. The teachers cannot teach the students at all times. But, since we have more free time, it is possible to utilize it to read books. By this way, we can read good books of our interest, and benefit from it. The authors of these books are experts in the respective area. They think of things which are good to people, and put them in print. Thus, the great principles, developed over many years, are further improved by new authors. We all benefit by the developments in areas such as medicine, science, and technology. We should appreciate their contributions. Due to their contributions, we lead a good life. There are books on philosophy to cultivate good character in us.
Hence, let us read the books written by wise people and experts, so that all the people can live with good character and with the scientific advantages.
October 2.
276. No one means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous. (Henry B. Adams).
You speak, speak what is useful. If you speak, speak not useless words. (Thirukkurahl – 200).
Solluga sollin payanudaiya; sollarkka
Sollin payanilaa(ch) sol. (Thirukkurahl – 200).
When we are 8-10 months old babies, our parents and relatives would expect us to say a few words in the mother tongue, meaning mother, father, aunt, grandfather, and grandmother. When we grow further, we learn to speak well.
When we are young and during studies in schools and colleges, we develop our knowledge, and art of speech, by reading many books, and speaking and listening to others. We should use this development properly. We must speak to others with kindness and respect. We should not speak as to hurt, or insult others. Our speech should be useful. We should realize that learned and great people use only good words and talk precisely. The flow of water in a deep river never makes noise. The waves will occur in shallow water near the sea shore continuously with noise; when we go farther in the sea, it is deep and quiet. In general, the highly educated people will not talk much; they will express their good principles in a lucid and precise manner. If we tap an empty pot, it will make more noise. Likewise, we will talk more and futile matters, if our knowledge is less.
Therefore, let us be wise and of good character.
October 3.
277. Success depends on three things: who says it, what he says, how he says it; and of these three things, what he says is the least important. (John Morley).
Since (both) wealth and evil result from (their) speech, ministers should most carefully guard themselves against faultiness therein. (Thirukkurahl – 642).
Aakkamum kaedum adhanaal varudhalaal
Kaa(th)thoambal sollin-kahn soarvu. (Thirukkurahl – 642).
One should think of being a good student, and excel in studies, when studying in school and college. Such people would prosper well in life. Instead, if we do not study well and waste the youthful years, our knowledge will not increase. If we want to rise to the top in life, other people should praise us. To achieve this, we should help others for their development in life.
Giving suggestions to others is possible for many persons. Such suggestions should be good. Even if the advice is good, the advisors must also be great persons. To avoid the damage due to floods, everyone would say that the rivers must be interlinked. In the same way, everyone would say that hunger could be eliminated by increasing food production. All of us know that if the sanitary conditions are improved, people would lead a healthy life. Many would say that everyone should be employed to eliminate poverty. If the head of a country, head of a social organization, or a great philanthropist suggests these methods, the plan would succeed, and the society would be benefitted. Good suggestions should be placed in the proper forum.
Therefore, good suggestions can be implemented by great people and those who have the capacity to occupy valuable forums. The suggestions of other common people would be considered as pep talk and vanish in thin air, without any benefit. Hence, we have to be at the top level to implement our plans successfully. Therefore, let us move up in the ladder.
October 4.
278. Every intellectual product must be judged from the point of view of the age and the people in which it was produced. (Walter Pater).
To discern the truth in everything, by whomsoever spoken, this is wisdom. (Thirukkurahl – 423).
Yepporuhl yaar-yaar-vaay(k) kaetpinum up-poruhl
Meip-poruhl kaahnbadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 423).
All of us speak. While speaking, we should use proper words. To ensure that, we should study well; we should have good character. We should use our intelligence in a good manner.
The rich people should utilize their wealth for a good cause. Likewise, learned people should use their knowledge for the benefit of the public, by their speech and writings. Philosophers, scientists, and other learned persons should propagate their knowledge and findings in an appropriate way. However, one should not take their inappropriate words as such. Sometimes, people would err. Hence, when we hear something, we have to analyze it as who tells it, what is said, and when it is said. Just because a person is considered great, it doesn’t mean that we should listen and follow it as such; in this context, if one involves in a bad work, it would lead to loss of material and honor. If we listen and act on the good words of persons who are patriotic, the country would prosper.
Therefore, we should listen to true leaders, and then get into action. If it leads to damage to the country, it should be avoided. Since many people do not understand this, destructive incidents take place, which diminishes the progress of the country. Therefore let us act with good thinking.
October 5.
279. There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision. (William James).
Call not him a man who parades forth empty words. Call him the chaff of men. (Thirukkurahl – 196).
Payan-ill-soll paaraattu vaanai magan-yenal
Makkat padhadi yenal. (Thirukkurahl – 196).
Everyone should be able to lead a good life. This thought would prevail in the minds of good people. In olden days, good people were there even among the uneducated. Since there were not many schools, only some people who lived at nearby places could get education. Now, the educational facilities are available to everyone. By utilizing such opportunities, everyone should lead a good life. One should be able to shape his life according to his education and capability.
Once a worker joins a company, he should get a good name by his performance. Instead of that, there are people who change their jobs or the place of work. Such people would never be able to shine in their jobs. Their principles will never be steady. This ensues due to their poor knowledge, and enormous wants. One should improve his strength. But, one should not aspire for great things more than his capability. Birds go here and there for its food. But, its action would stop, once it is full. An ordinary person’s likings would not be like that. One cannot even predict how his desire will magnify. Such people will be of no use to anything; just like the husk is carried away in the direction of the wind, these persons will be changing places without any firm decision.
Therefore, everyone must study well from the young age. Good characters must be imbibed. The benefits of this would be known after some years, at the grown-up stage. Only if the thorn-like hard skin is removed, the jack fruit can be relished. Hence, let us study well, and live with good character.
October 6.
280. Genius means little more than the faculty of perceiving in an unhabitual way. (William James).
The wise are those who know beforehand what will happen; those who do not know this are the unwise. (Thirukkurahl – 427).
Arivudaiyaar aavadhu arivaar; arivilaar
Agdhari kallaa dhavar. (Thirukkurahl – 427).
We know the value of education. That is the reason for starting many schools and colleges. Everyone must study at least a minimum level (10th/12th standard). While studying, we should have a great aim. After reaching the first target, we should fix another higher level as our target. Those who get such a thought and opportunity could progress well in studies and life.
There are so many employment opportunities to lead a good life. One should perform well in the chosen job. To shine well in a job, we should possess the thinking capacity. To be successful in sports we need physical strength, regular practice, and undisturbed mind. If it is knowledge based work, our basic knowledge must be good. The performance in a work, and the thoughts would not be good when carried out with a disturbed mind, anger, or disgust. Only due to the thinking and accomplishments of great people in the areas such as science, medicine and technology, we are now enjoying the facilities like cell phone, television, computer, medical advancements, airplanes, space technology and so on. Such great persons have accomplished many things by their selfless intelligent thinking.
Therefore, ordinary people could be content with what they have, and live happily. But, selfless learned persons should always involve themselves and accomplish great things in their respective specialized disciplines. The present growth could be maintained by the action of common people. The country would develop by learned and wise people.
October 7.
281. The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook. (William James).
Wisdom is a weapon to ward off destruction; it is an inner fortress which enemies cannot destroy. (Thirukkurahl – 421).
Arivartram kaakkum karuvy; seruvaarkkum
Vuhllazhikkal aaghaa arahn. (Thirukkurahl – 421).
In villages, different varieties of food materials are produced. We avoid eating certain vegetables and fruits. We consume some bitter vegetables with suitable modifications, based on their medicinal values. In general, most of us would like to eat sweet fruits. Some people would refuse to take certain sweet fruits. Likewise, in young age, there are people who listen, or do not listen, to the advices of elders.
Those who grow by listening to and learning good advices would be successful in their life. Such persons improve further to become wise persons. These great people should never get upset on certain things. They would never get worried about physical disturbances arising from external conditions. But, it is wrong to say something which would hurt them. They should forget and ignore such a situation and lead the life. If any difference of opinion occurs among friends, forgetting that is a symbol of grace for wisdom and friendship. Likewise, people in a family become great if they forget the little hitches among husband and wife. The words uttered without thinking would damage friendship, marriage, government, and even country. Those who ignore the faults would be considered great, while those who commit the mistakes would be considered as mean persons. Those who keep doing the mistakes (thinking that others would forget) would never be considered as human being.
Hence, one should live as a great person. To achieve it, one should associate with good people. One should read good books. Let us live like this, and shape a good society.
October 8.
282. Tell him to live by yes and no – yes to everything good, no to everything bad. (William James).
The minister is one who can effect discord (among foes), maintain the goodwill of his friends and restore to friendship those who have seceded (from him). (Thirukkurahl – 633).
Piri(th)thalum paehnik kohlalum pirinthaar(p)
Poru(th)thalum vallathu arasu. (Thirukkurahl – 633).
We are all surrounded by good and bad things. When we are young and in growing age, our parents would guide us about what we could eat and what we should avoid. To grow well and be healthy, this control is necessary. In the same way, good advice and good books are essential for us to grow as good people.
First, we should be aware of the habits that would spoil our health, and protect us from that. Drinking alcoholic liquors and smoking would damage the health and reduce the longevity. The bad sanitary conditions which cause various diseases must be eliminated. If our health is not good, we would not be able to think properly. To live as a good person, good friends are essential. When we discuss our troubles with our friends, our tension would exit. If we take a wrong path in life, they would prevent us from that. Hence, we should have a few good friends. To get good friends, we should lead a good life. We should associate with good people and learned persons. We must read good books during leisure hours. One can give good books as gifts on occasions like birthdays. One should read good books at least for 30 minutes on every day. One must listen to the good principles through radio and television programs; it is not to be neglected considering it as for older people only. Just like the children who go to schools first, those who start their life should adhere to the good habits from the beginning itself.
Therefore, one should listen to good things and practice accordingly. Let us live as good people without succumbing to bad things.
October 9.
283. You don’t make poems with ideas, but with words. (Stephane Mallarme).
Though you are acquainted with the (theoretical) methods (of performing an act), understand the practical ways of the world and act accordingly. (Thirukkurahl – 637).
Seyar(k)kai arinthak kadai(th)thum vulaga(th)thu
Yiyar(k)kai arinthu seyal. (Thirukkurahl – 637).
Before we venture to do a work, we should first find out how it could be done, gather the required materials, and then start the work. It is not proper if we keep saying about our intention to do the work.
Hard work and education are essential, whether it is sports or studies. Many would aspire to become famous as doctors and engineers when in schools. However, it becomes impossible for many aspirants to achieve their aim. To accomplish something, one should work hard, or study for several hours each day, and for months and years. Only if we sow plants, we can develop a forest. Only if we sow seeds, the plant would appear. If we keep telling it, there will be no plants, and the seeds would lose their power to grow. If we have to go to a place, we should take the appropriate bus, train, or flight, at the right time and place.
Therefore, one can become a poet only if he writes it. To become an author, one should first write articles, stories etc. To become a speaker, one should participate and practice in speeches in schools and later in small groups. Just like it is not possible to eat a picture of a vegetable, it is of no use if we keep our thoughts within our mind; it should be put into action. Nobody would consider one as an athlete if he does not participate in any sports activities. The uneducated cannot be considered as a scholar. Hence, it would be great only if thoughts and plans are executed. Therefore, let us think and perform.
October 10.
284. It is not the strength but the duration of great sentiments that makes great men. (Friedrich W. Nietzsche).
The possession of (energy of) mind is true property; the possession of wealth passes away and abides not. (Thirukkurahl – 592).
Vuhllam vudaimai vudaimai; poruhl-udaimai
Nillaadhu neenghi vidum. (Thirukkurahl – 592).
First, all of us enter into primary level for our schooling. The number of students who go to high schools goes down. Still less number of students goes to colleges. Thus, those who have firm thought on the good value of education study well and reach higher levels in life.
If the employees want to reach higher levels in their jobs, they should appear in some tests and be successful to accomplish it. In technical jobs, the workers should show interest in developing it. Those who involve in public activities should do it with full involvement. If a work is not supervised properly, some employees may become dishonest. In developing countries, the cheating increases by taking advantage of the poverty. People do not think of the good habit of being true to their thinking and work, to eradicate their poverty. Due to this, individual’s prosperity grows; but, the country’s prosperity declines. The good projects of the government could not get executed with full satisfaction. Improper execution causes repetition of some works, resulting in economic decline. This is not understood by ordinary poor people, who invariably ignore good principles.
Therefore, those who are involved in society based work should be firm in their commitment. Those who gain wealth by misappropriation of public funds are cheating themselves and their families. Hence, truth must always be adhered.
October 11.
285. The sick are the greatest danger for the healthy; it is not from the strongest that harm comes to the strong, but from the weakest. (Friedrich W. Nietzsche).
Fear not foes (who say they would cut) like a sword; but fear the friendship of foes (who seemingly act) like relations. (Thirukkurahl – 882).
Vaahl-poal pagaivarai anjarkka; anjugha
Kaehl-poal pagaivar thodarbu. (Thirukkurahl – 882).
Thousands of students study in schools and colleges. They can be divided in two groups as those who study well and who don’t study well. They can also be divided as those who have good character and who don’t. The students of the second category would be in less number only. The main reason for that would be their family atmosphere. They will express their disgust in public places to get some solace.
We observe these in public life: Most of those around us are healthy persons. Only some persons suffer from fever, stomachache and other diseases. We are scared of such diseases, whether they would affect us. Good health does not spread from healthy persons to others. Only dangerous things spread. If good things spread among people, it would be dealing with only good thoughts in the minds of others. If dangerous things spread, the country, the place and the society would get ruined. Therefore, we have to be cautious against dangerous things. Even though many vehicles follow the rules and go smoothly on the roads, the accidents occur due to the mistakes of a few drivers. Strong people involve in fights directly with each other. The weak will look for a cunning method. Some persons will act like friends and relatives to spoil us. In Tamil literature, there is a story in which an enemy went disguised as a devotee of God Shiva, to go near a king (who always respected Shiva’s devotees) only to kill him. We hear about the quarrels among relatives for ancestral properties. This should be avoided; if the partition is done smoothly, it would be pleasant.
Therefore, if we live with good character, it would be good to everyone. If the pleasure activities are restricted, the bad thoughts will vanish, so that, we can lead a peaceful and pleasant life.
October 12.
286. What have you done, you there weeping without cease; tell me, yes you, what have you done with all your youth? (Paul Verlaine).
Time, which shows itself to the ignorant) as if it were something (real), in the estimation of the wise is (only) a saw which cuts down life. (Thirukkurahl – 334).
Naahl-yena ondru-poal kaatti vuyir-yeerum
Vaahladhu vuhnarvaar(p) perrin. (Thirukkurahl – 334).
The time and the words we utter cannot be retrieved. Those who realize this from the young age and act accordingly reach lofty positions in life. Since many students do not realize the importance and values of education during their studies, they do not study properly. Due to this, they are not able to get good jobs at the employable age. When a good job is not obtained, happiness and comfortable life become a dream.
If we complete a work beyond the specified time, the benefit of the work will not be obtained in full. One should complete 10th standard within the age of 15-16. If it is completed at the age of 25, the employable opportunity declines very much. The emphasis on this aspect is very low at the school level. The situation wherein teachers concentrate on teaching the various subjects prevails, in general. By this way, we get more number of academically educated persons. The art of living must also be developed along with normal education. If the knowledge about art of living is emphasized in schools, the number of erring students at the young age will decrease. If the students learn the values of good life, they will think of living a honorable life. The number of persons who indulge in dangerous activities will decrease. A good society can be created. Educated persons help the country develop well in economic, industrial, and educational aspects by their ideas. Riots and damages to properties and life are caused by those who don’t learn the values of life.
Therefore, education on the values of ‘good living’ is important to create a good society. In Tamil language there are plenty of good principles which emphasize good living. If this is introduced to students at the young age, it will infuse benefits in their life. In their old age, they need not worry about their ignorance on good and bad habits while they were young. Therefore, everyone should read the good principles available in Tamil and other languages.
October 13.
287. Goodwill is the mightiest practical force in the universe. (Charles F. Dole).
They will never enter the world of darkness and wretchedness whose minds are the abode of kindness. (Thirukkurahl – 243).
Aruhl-saerntha nenjinaarkku yillai yiruhl-saerntha
Yinnaa vulagam pugal. (Thirukkurahl – 243).
It will be apt to say the association of two good people as friends. This word can be considered as a gift to Tamil language. The association of two uncultured persons can be called as associates. They will unite while working; if any difference of opinion arises, they will separate. It can be considered as an immiscible mixture, just like rice and stone, and oil and water. Friendship is one which is inseparable, just like the combination of milk and water. The high and low difference will not arise.
Friendship is developed by kindness. What is needed for such an association and what should not be done are mentioned in Tamil and other languages. Some persons will try to spoil the friendship by some activities. We have to refrain from it. If we change our stand, then it is not true friendship. This principle can be delineated between two countries. There should be no difference of opinion between friendly countries. If two wheels are linked in sideways, it will stay well. While moving, both will go in the same speed. But, in bicycles, the two wheels are linked one behind the other. It needs something else to stand. It is good to live by associating with others and helping others with good thoughts and ignoring disparities. Everyone knows about Mother Theresa who was given Nobel Prize for her good thoughts and love to people. The reason for that is her humane deed.
Therefore, the people in the world should think of living happily according to their capability to work. One should not think of spoiling and destructing others. If each country utilizes the money spent on safeguarding and on rectifying the damages for constructive purposes, the whole world will be prosperous. Hence, let good thoughts prevail among us.

288. The primary office of a newspaper is the gathering of news; comment is free, but facts are sacred. (Charles P. Scott).
Since (both) wealth and evil result from (their) speech, ministers should most carefully guard themselves against faultiness therein. (Thirukkurahl – 642).
Aakkamum kaedum adhanaal varudhalaal
Kaaththoambal sollinkahn soarvu. (Thirukkurahl – 642).
Each person will look at an object with different views. Some actions will appear to be correct for some persons. Some others will consider it wrong. What we say will be like that only. Some will appreciate and some will denounce it. For example, if a teacher tells his class to write an essay, the bright students will express their capability and feel happy; some students will avoid writing the essay to cover their inability.
Thus, there will be many views for an action. Therefore, the speakers and writers should remember this. Those who give the news should work without any likes and dislikes. The writings should not distract any facts. If our speech is wrong, it will hurt others. The wise people will ignore it without forming any opinion. However, ordinary people will get angry and try to attack us. This will cause damage to self-respect and property. The well educated will avoid a bad speech. Others, without controlling their tongue, will use bad words and worry later. Those who are involved in public activities should realize this. In general, if one praises others, there will not be any danger; sometimes, it will yield good results. If spoken wrongly, the speaker may have to face some troubles. Even if truth is said, the affected will get wild and cause damages.
Therefore, one should be cautious while talking. Even if truth is told, one should know where and how it is said. No one should think that what he says is always correct. Telling wrong opinions is also wrong. Let us speak well and live comfortably.

289. There is no substitute for hard work. (Thomas Alva Edison).
Firmness in action is (simply) one’s firmness of mind; all other abilities are not of this nature. (Thirukkurahl – 661).
வினைத்திட்பம் என்பது ஒருவன் மனத்திட்பம்;
Vinai-thitpam yenbathu oruvan mana(th)-thitpam
Martraiya yellaam pira. (Thirukkurahl – 661).
We learn good principles during our studies when we read Tamil and other languages. Therefore, it is good for the children to learn their languages, at the young age. Studying science, mathematics, and other subjects is useful for the development of the country and the world. But, if a country has to be good, it should have people of good character, for which, the people should know good principles. For this, everyone should learn proverbs.
For the development of a country, well educated people are important. To get such educated people, students need to study the subjects like science and mathematics from the young age with full concentration and daily. Many top sports persons in tennis, athletics and other games practice daily. But, many students, invariably, do not put in so much effort in their studies. Hard work does not mean working hard; during studies, one should read for more time with full concentration, attention and understanding. There should be people who could work well and sincerity to help the educated persons. This will help the country develop in all areas. If people who are involved in areas like manufacture of medicines, educational institutions, business, industries, health areas do not have good principles, many dangerous things would occur. We read about this in news papers daily. But, we forget this soon after reading it.
The country will disintegrate if it attains economic prosperity by illegal methods. Substandard medicines cause damages to the health. Substandard in engineering materials causes damage to prosperity and life. This happens due to the activities of people of bad principles. One should nurture good habits and lofty ideals from the student days itself. Hence, let us grow as good people.

290. Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety nine percent perspiration. (Thomas Alva Edison).
Yield not to the feebleness which says, “This is too difficult to be done.” Labor will give the greatness (of mind) which is necessary (to do it). (Thirukkurahl – 611).
Arumai vudai(th)-thendru asaavaamai vaehndum;
Perumai muyarchi tharum. (Thirukkurahl – 611).
Intelligence and hard work are important for everyone to progress in life. By studying well, we can develop our knowledge. But, it will be good only if we realize what we study and use it at the appropriate time. This is possible due to intelligence.
If we have to be intelligent, we have to follow certain habits. Drinking alcoholic materials will affect our brain. Anger is considered a more dangerous character than other bad habits. The thinking ability will diminish and get destroyed. Sound health will get deteriorated. Only if good health prevails, our mind will perform well. Our brain will be able to think properly only in quiet atmosphere. Therefore, we have to lead a good life to cultivate good thinking. If the thinking has to be good, we should have considerable knowledge in various areas. To achieve this, we should put in our efforts suitably. Therefore, knowledge and hard work must unite. Knowledge and work must suit the requirement for any job. Humane feelings and consciousness have also to be added. Knowledge and capability are vital for economic growth. Neglect of consciousness to get prosperity can be equated to getting a still-born child.
Therefore, let us acquire knowledge. Let us work hard with knowledge. Let us achieve our goal. Let us live as human being.
October 17.
291. Truth is the object of philosophy, but not always of philosophers. (John C. Collins).
(True) knowledge is the perception concerning everything of whatever kind, that that thing is the true thing. (Thirukkurahl – 355).
Yep-poruhl yeth-thanmai(th)thu aayinum ap-poruhl
Meip-poruhl kaahnbadhu arivu. (Thirukkurahl – 355).
All of us would like to lead a good life. The measure of good life depends on the mind of a person. They are of two kinds as comfortable life and happy life. Only some people will enjoy both comfortable and happy life.
Comfortable life is possible due to material possession. Even though good house, household facilities, recreational objects, and vehicles are possessed, there are many variations in these things. One should live happily with the available facilities. This mental condition can be obtained by reading philosophical books and listening to speeches of renowned persons. Those who do not realize these good principles would indulge in wrong deeds to acquire the comforts and to increase the available comforts. By this, they will live without real happiness. Hence, everyone should read philosophical books. Wise persons will emphasize this principle. However, some people who advocate the good principles would fail to follow the same. We should take the good principles, without minding the persons who advocate it. Some people will take advantage of our ignorance, and divert us towards dangerous ways by acting as our friends. At that time, we should approach wise persons, and put ourselves in the correct direction.
Hence, philosophy is good. Without bothering much about the advisor, we should follow the good advices. If this is adhered, we can live happily.
October 18.
292. Every sound shall end in silence, but the silence never dies. (Samuel M. Hageman).
He who, throughout one birth, like a tortoise, keeps in his five senses, will obtain happiness throughout the seven births. (Thirukkurahl – 126).
Orumai-yuhl aamai-poal ayndh-adakkal aartrin
Yezhumaiyum yaemaappu vudai(th)thu. (Thirukkurahl – 126).
It is considered that our life is itself a school. It is called as tips for good life. This emphasizes how we should live, and what we should avoid. The subjects like science, mathematics, engineering, and medicine which are studied in schools and colleges are important for us. However, the study of philosophical topics is valuable for our happiness.
We should analyze our life. We don’t know anything at the time of our birth. We sleep for many hours quietly. In a couple of years, we learn to walk, run and speak. Then in the age of 15-20 years, we become physically strong along with academic knowledge. A few persons become arrogant at the age of 30-40 years, based on their strength. We insult some persons who are weaker than us. We express our disgust and envy on those who are better placed than us. We insult the elders. Many people do such things like these. People do not realize that they would also suffer from deterioration in their walking, speaking, hearing and thinking capabilities at their old age. Even some great speakers, learned persons and philosophers, at the age of 80-90, lose their consciousness, and remain even in a coma state.
Therefore, our strength is capable of growth; then it will diminish and vanish. This occurrence is natural in everyone’s life. One should realize this and desist from insulting others. One should learn to live by respecting the elders and learned people.
October 19.
293. The greater the ignorance, the greater the dogmatism. (Sir William Osler).
Freedom from conceit is (the nature of true) greatness, (while) obstinacy therein is (that of) meanness. (Thirukkurahl – 979).
Perumai perumidham yinmai; sirumai
Perumidham voorndhu vidal. (Thirukkurahl – 979).
There is not much difference between newborn babies. However, the difference is noticeable during their growth. We observe the intellectual difference among the students. Some persons will have much interest in sports. Some will perform well in studies. It is good to shape their life according to their interests. But, sometimes they take a different direction in their life.
Even if the students study the subjects of their choice, all of them do not reach the top level. They reach higher levels depending on their intelligence and efforts. A few will remain in each level. Like this, many persons stop in the middle without reaching the top due to their insufficient efforts in studies. Such people should realize their position and lead the life. For this, one should know the philosophical principles. Otherwise, they will boast themselves and adamantly argue with others about their opinions as the supreme one. They will always think that there is no one who knows more and greater than themselves. They will talk vehemently to conceal their ignorance, thereby forgetting the wisdom. Many people do not know that wisdom is superior to speed.
Therefore, let us live wisely. Let us reach higher levels.
October 20.
294. In the life of a young man, the most essential thing for happiness is gift of friendship. (Sir William Osler).
What things are there so difficult to acquire as friendship? What guards are there so difficult to break through by the efforts of one’s foes? (Thirukkurahl – 781).
Seyarkk(u)-ariya yaavuhla natpin adhupoal
Vinaikk(u)-ariya yaavuhla kaappu? (Thirukkurahl – 781).
Friendship is essential for everyone. There is no age limit for this. It is good to be among friends from the young age. When we talk and associate with friends, we will forget the worries and be happy.
Friends are considered as good persons. We should have good people along with us. People will know about our nature by looking at our friends. If our friends are thieves, we will also get into that line. If we wish to desist that, we should move away from such people. Habits such as smoking, drinking (liquors), criticism will spread easily from one another unaware. Hence is the need to have good persons as friends. Relatives are obtained due to our birth. But, friends are obtained based on our likings. Therefore, even though many persons are around us, a friend is one who stays with us and does good things to us. It is our mind which selects a friend. If our mind is good, we will be able to acquire good friends. Hence, we should first be a good student and human being.
Therefore, friendship is essential for everyone at all ages. To get good friends, we should be good.
October 21.
295. Nothing in life is more wonderful than truth – the one great moving force which we can neither weigh in the balance nor test in the crucible. (Sir William Osler).
Amidst all that we have seen (described) as real (excellence), there is nothing so good as truthfulness. (Thirukkurahl – 300).
Yam-meyyaak kahnda-vartruhl yillai yenai(th)th(u)-one-drum
Vaaimaiyin nalla pira. (Thirukkurahl – 300).
Everyone will say that truth will win, and one should speak only the truth. The story of Harichandra is the best one in our epics to emphasize that one should speak only the truth, and should not tell lies. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, lived like that in the 20th century.
Even though we tell that we should speak only the truth, Thirukkurahl tells that even a lie will be considered equal to truth, if it is said to prevent a danger. One should not tell lies at other occasions. Good people will repent, if they have to tell a lie even once. If such a lie caused a danger to someone, they will repent throughout their lifetime. Ordinary people tell lies for their convenience, and to accumulate wealth. They will experience the dangerous after effects, within their lifetime. Our religious culture tells that the difficulties, which some people undergo now, are the results of their sinful activities in their earlier births. Without probing into this, we should think why it is said like this. everyone should think of good life to all. If we think to live by hurting and spoiling others, it is not a life at all.
Therefore, we should not fulfill our wishes by telling lies and hurting others. Good life means being truthful and helping others. Hence, let us speak the truth, work honestly, and lead a renowned life.
October 22.
296. Save the fleeting minute; learn gracefully to dodge the bore. (Sir William Osler).
When a man puts away idleness, the reproach which has come upon himself and his family will disappear. (Thirukkurahl – 609).
Kudi-yaahnmai yuhl-vandha kurtram oruvan
Madi-yaahnmai maartrak kedum. (Thirukkurahl – 609).
Those who wish to progress in life should do their work properly with eagerness, but without laziness and wasting the time. Without realizing this, young people waste their time by spending more time in games and chatting with friends. The result is the availability of less time for studies, which lowers the level of their studies making them to get less marks.
It is said that ‘time is like gold’. The metal gold is precious. Throughout the world, a country’s economy is measured based on its reserve in gold. Everyone knows that one should not waste such a valuable material. Likewise, we should work without wasting the time. In world level sports, some persons have lost their winning chances by 0.01 second. The precision in time will vary depending upon the place and the nature of the work. If we do our daily work properly without wasting the time, it will benefit us, the country and the world. The scientist Dr. Robert Edwards announced the finding of ‘test-tube baby’ in 1978. Based on this finding, about 40 lakhs (4 million) babies have born. For this finding, he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2010. The relentless effort of Dr. Edward without wasting any time during the career has brought in fame for him and enormous pleasure for many people.
Therefore, let us utilize the time properly. Let us not waste the time in trivial pleasure activities.
October 23.
297. Good as it is to inherit a library, it is better to collect one. (Augustine Birrell).
The learning which a man has acquired in one birth will yield him pleasure during seven births. (Thirukkurahl – 398).
Orumaik-kahn thaan-kartra kalvi oruvarkku
Yezhumaiyum yaemaappu vudai(th)thu. (Thirukkurahl – 398).
Proverbs are those which are in existence for long years which propagate good principles to the people. Just like eating fruits gives strength to our body, reading the proverbs will do good to our mind and life. How just looking at the fruits will not give strength to the body, reading and hearing of proverbs will not be sufficient; we should understand those principles and follow them in our life. What is the use of just looking at a shirt in a shop? Only if we buy it and wear it, we will get pleasure. Likewise, we should read the books, follow the good principles in our life, and spread them among others. Education is essential to achieve this. Books are needed. Library is needed. There will be a variety of books in a library. However, if we establish a library, we can acquire the books which have good principles as per our wish; much development can be achieved in that discipline. In schools, everyone studies science. However, we can become an expert in an area only if we study well in a specific field.
Therefore, we should study well. One should become an expert in a specific subject. We should help others to become experts by our expertise and hard work. This action will be always useful and for nest seven generations. The seven generations should mean not only for a particular family, but for the whole mankind.
October 24.
298. What people say behind your back is your standing in the community. (Edgar W. Howe).
All other creatures will worship him who has attained the control of his own soul. (Thirukkurahl – 268).
Thun(n)uyir thaan-ara(p) pertraanai yaenaiya
Mannuyir yellaam thozhum. (Thirukkurahl – 268).
In the olden days, the poets who visit a king will, in general, praise the king with their poems. Then they will leave the palace with a gift from the king. Nobody will mention about any drawbacks, if there is any, of the king. Only a few poets will point out the king’s faults to him directly.
Nowadays, the government’s policies and actions are criticized in the respective assembly, due to our independence. Apart from this, nobody opposes the principles put forth by elders. However, if it is not agreeable, some people will criticize it behind them. It is not a good culture to criticize a person face to face. But, if a leader or a great person commits a mistake, it is common to tell it to others. If such news is correct, it reflects the true nature of that person. The students are asked to give their opinion about their teachers. A person’s greatness will be seen by the news and the number of people at the funeral after his death. Many poor people paid homage to a dentist on his death. The reason is that the dentist did a lot to treat the poor, and the courtesy extended by him to the poor people.
Therefore, those who help others to progress well with unselfish attitude will remain in the hearts of the people and in the history of the country. Let us avoid selfishness and serve the society.
October 25.
299. Educational relations make the strongest tie. (Cecil J. Rhodes).
Like learning, the friendship of the noble, the more it is cultivated, the more delightful does it become. (Thirukkurahl - 783).
Navil-thorum nool-nayam poalum payil-thorum
Panbudai yaahlar thodarbu. (Thirukkurahl – 783).
Friendship is the combination of two good minds, which understands each other and involves in helping the world. The friendship which starts at the young age in schools will invariably diminish within a few years. The reason for that is the change in their locations due to higher education, and profession. This change of place at young age curtails their meeting in the course of time. If they could meet often, the friendship will continue.
The friendship which starts at the college level and during employment will grow and last long. The conversation between the two will deal with good principles. Since both are well educated, their discussion will involve lofty principles, science, profession and other constructive topics. But, when two bad people discuss, they will exchange their bad deeds only; this happens because they don’t know anything else. When international scientists, doctors and industrialists meet, they become friends, and thereby contribute much more to the world. Their acquaintance is made possible by their education and profession.
Therefore, the friendship between well educated persons will result in great accomplishments. The friendship of ordinary people will waste each other’s time, and sometimes, end up in danger. Hence, the friendship of wise persons is always good; let us admire it propagate it.
October 26.
300. Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise. (Sigmund Freud).
He, who speaks truth with his heart, is superior to those who make gifts and practice austerities. (Thirukkurahl – 295).
Mana(th)thodu vaaimai mozhiyin thava(th)thodu
Dhaanam-sei vaarin thalai. (Thirukkurahl – 295).
People will say that some children do not retaliate, even if they are beaten by other children. Parents will normally advise their children that they should not tell any lie. If parents fail to tell that, the children will grow without knowing that telling a lie is wrong.
We learn to speak the truth from the student age, through the books we read and from elders. Those who do not learn this start telling lies for fun, and end up in the habit of telling lies. Due to this, the life and dignity of some persons get spoiled. It has become a common feature to steal something, and put the blame on someone else. Let us look into the value of being honest from a different angle. While laying roads, if the contractor does not do a honest job in laying the road properly, the road gets damaged soon. If bridges, buildings, machineries are not properly made, a lot of loss takes place. Without realizing this, people think of the profits that they could get out of it. If people are not honest in the maintenance of buses, trains, planes, cars and other things, many accidents and even death occur. One new bridge broke and was washed away by heavy floods, probably either due to longer span or improper construction. If the teachers are not honest in their work, the next generation cannot improve. If the government employees and politicians forget the value of honesty, a country cannot develop. If philosophers ignore the importance of truth, a country will be devoid of wise people; the number of people who commit bad and dangerous activities will be on the increase.
Therefore, everyone should adhere to speaking the truth, and being honest in everything. Everyone should realize that only truth will win, and hence act accordingly.
October 27.
301. This will never be a civilized country until we expend more money for books than we do for chewing gum. (Elbert Hubbard).
Learning is the true imperishable riches; all other things are not riches. (Thirukkurahl – 400).
Kaedil vizhu(ch)selvam kalvi oruvarkku
Madalla martrai avai. (Thirukkurahl – 400).
A country’s greatness is determined by its good people and good economy. A home will be considered great by the presence of good children. There is no better place if it also has a sound economy.
One would like to know what is meant by good children and good people. Academic education and good morale must both be present. We can achieve economic growth by academic knowledge. By good morale, one can become wise, and help others to lead a good life with the available resource. Earlier (before 1950s), only some people got the opportunity to study. Some people developed their morale by listening to other wise persons, in the absence of suitable books. Most people performed their duties properly, and led a great life. Nowadays, the educational opportunities have expanded. This helps to increase the economic development. We forget the philosophical principles by giving more importance to material pleasure. Some people never read or follow good principles. Due to this, the country moves in the downward direction. Hence, if we have many good books, we will tend to read them; economic growth will also take place. Books like Thirukkurahl and Naaladiyar, or similar books must be present in everyone’s house. Everyone must read the good books daily for an hour. A lot of time should not be spent on recreational activities.
Therefore, everyone must develop the habit of reading good books daily. One should buy good books whenever possible. One should become a member in a library, and read the available books. It is commonly said that ‘a book is a friend’. Let us read the books and get fame.
October 28.
302. We have no more right to consume happiness without producing it, than to consume wealth without producing it. (George Bernard Shaw).
The great wealth obtained by one who has no goodness will perish like pure milk spoilt by the impurity of the vessel. (Thirukkurahl – 1000).
Pahnbilaan pertra peunj-selvam nanbaal
Kalan-theemai yaal-thririn thartru. (Thirukkurahl – 1000).
The life of people should always be pleasant. When the students get high marks they will be happy; sports persons will be happy if they get medals and cups for their achievements; lawyers will be happy, if their case wins. Many examples like this can be listed. One should share such happiness with others.
Only some people think that everyone should be happy. The thoughts and actions of a majority of people will focus on their wellbeing only. Some people will hurt others for their joyous life; this kind of action is wrong. The employees and the owners of an industry should not consider their welfare alone. Each category of people should think of the other. If this does not prevail, the danger of closing the company arises. If we have to be happy, we should try to make others around us happy. What we eat and enjoy the facilities are made possible by the efforts of others. In the same way, others should benefit by us. We should help others in whatever way we could. How is it correct if we think that others should do good things to us, while we do wrongful things? Everyone should work as the health permits, and advise others whenever possible, based on the surroundings and knowledge.
Therefore, even if we are affluent, we should work or create employment opportunity. We should involve in social service, and encourage others. The spouses of leaders, in general, involve in social activities. Educating others on good habits and characters is also a good work. Helping to prevent material destruction is also a good work. Let all of us work and be happy.
October 29.
303. The test of a man or woman’s breeding is how they behave in a quarrel. (George Bernard Shaw).
Those who fear guilt, if they commit a fault small as a millet seed, will consider it to be as large as a palmyra tree. (Thirukkurahl – 433).
Thinaith-thuhnaiyaam kurtram varinum panaith-thuhnaiyaak
Kohlvar pazhi-naahnu vaar. (Thirukkurahl – 433).
True friends and relatives will come forward and help us when we experience some difficulties, even if we don’t tell them about our situation. This action reveals their magnanimity. Such great people invariably would be free from ‘envy, desire and anger’.
The above mentioned three characteristics emanate from our mind. The first two, which are invisible, will create the visible third. The ‘envy’ will erupt from the mind if it accumulates above a certain level; we will worry about it for not being able to control it. Just like the bursting of a balloon when a small hole occurs, it will burst out as anger. It is very difficult to control it. Whoever controls his speech at that time, he becomes a great person. Only at that time, others will be able to know about his magnanimity and wisdom. Some people insult them, without understanding them properly. What to say of such immature people! Such people will be quiet in front of those who also use foul words. There are some proverbs and advices for such people. It is to be seen when such persons will read them and understand properly!
Those who wish to establish good life to people might have to be harsh at certain times. Otherwise, people will live without any discipline. It is rare to follow a discipline voluntarily by the people. Ordinary persons will shout with anger when their prestige is affected, or when they get disgusted. Great people, in general, will maintain calmness. At times of anger, they will control their speech, without losing the temper. That level is great.
